For instance, could the geopolitics between China and the US be predicted in, say, 2007? Then, China had a per capita income of about $2500 and was growing at annual rate of 10%. What purpose would have been served by including geopolitics risk in a model that was not relevant for the time? In short, Tett’s argument leads to the conclusion that either the future can be easily predicted or because it doesn’t use all variables it’s inherently flawed. The last argument can be dismissed because mathematical models are predictive, in the short term, and therefore are useful.
