The reason "pretextual traffic stops" don't work is that the police often pull over regular people, like the elderly driving old cars or those who can only afford cheaper vehicles. Meanwhile, gang members in flashy cars and drug dealers in luxury SUVs get away without being stopped. It seems like the cops are more interested in getting overtime than actually doing their jobs. We hardly see them patrolling the streets, whether it's day or night. Where are they? Probably back at the station discussing their lunch plans.

It's ridiculous that they put so many people through the ringer when they rarely find other criminal activity! Talk about violation of 4th amendment! At this point shouldn't we consider that this young man was acting in self defense! They all had their guns out pointed at the car over a seatbelt!

Pretextual stops violate the 4th amendment. You simply can use a stop as an excuse to search for contraband. A stop for an alleged traffic infraction is not grounds for a search, anyway.
