Hogwood's usual 'scholarly' approach for the 'Schoolmaster'! I really have trouble imagining Haydn conducting the first movement that fast at Eserhazy.

Il titolo "il maestro di scuola", entrato in uso nell'Ottocento come la maggioranza delle denominazioni attribuite alle sinfonie di Haydn, non sembra avere rapporti con il contenuto. Con un certo sforzo di immaginazione si potrebbe intravvedere nell'adagio compassato, come del resto in tutta l'opera, un ricordo delle lezioni del cugino Johann Matthias Franck, maestro di scuola e insegnate di canto. Grazie al nome, calzante o fuorviante, ha in ogni caso conosciuto la popolarità che meritava. La volontà di superare la crisi dello Sturm und Drang giunge a risultati sorprendenti, lasciando emergere, in modo più chiaro rispetto alla troppo impegnata sinfonia n.54, la nuova personalità di Haydn.
