Really enjoyed the PA announcer for this show. I was there for this one and a few others where he worked the mic; got the crowd really hyped with introductions akin to a heavyweight fight.
As a member of the Scouts, that last month of the season was crazy with the top corps really pushing each other. Much respect to all the corps that year, and especially the Blue Devils and SCV. This night is fully etched into my mind, coming from behind. We took it to a whole new level that night...
1981 -- the year of highway robbery ... where the BEST corps in BOTH DCI AND DCA finished THIRD at the respective championships ... Madison didn't get their second title until 1988, and are in the throes of a THIRTY-FIVE YEAR DROUGHT ... Reading Buccaneers didn't win DCA again until 2005 (TWENTY-FIVE YEAR DROUGHT), but then they won FIFTEEN out of eighteen from 2005 thru 2023 (2020 cancelled for COVID-19) to finish with NINETEEN DCA titles (nearly DOUBLE the eleven won by Hawthorne Caballeros), and Reading BOOKENDED DCA, winning the first in 1965 and the last in 2023 ...
SCV was rushed onto the field that night, after it had rained for a few minutes. We were cold, and frantic not to miss our start time. A week later we took 1st place at DCI championships.
That was the end of the last truly legacy golden era.

"a cake which will feed 150." You know we can see how big the cake is.

This was my rookie year in the Blue Devils. It made my heart hurt again sitting through this retreat...

This was one of the most truly competitive years ever. The top 5 were swapping places left and right.

This is the Steve Rondarniro from my childhood when he was on the local ROchester, NY news.
4:57 Someone from the Madison Scouts passed out, you can see in the right hand part of the screen staff members running to help.
I see one of the girls in the color guard passed out
I was freezing my ass off in my Cadet uniform that night in Montreal.
You were lucky. You could have been bare legged with culottes on & short, white boots. lmao
