I always appreciate the OSU school of literature guide. However, when referencing Florence Anthony aka Ai (1978 Lamont Poetry Selection Killing Floor) it is not read as A.I. It is the word love in Japanese which is the sound i. Please note the correction.
Thanks for the correction, Tracy! We'll make a note of it on the transcript site that accompanies this video. We don't always get everything right, and we're always happy to correct any errors in our work.
Dramatic monologue is poem written in form of speech of individual characters, it’s compressed into single vivid , scene, narrative sense of speaker history, psychological, insight into his character. For example browning famous poem my last duches . As ducke of Ferrara reveals his arrogance, jealousy, control over his late wife to listener who is never addressed is she command as then all smiles stopped together/ there she stands / as if alive . Characteristics of dramatic monologue first person perspective, slient audiences, show reveal character. Best dramatic monologue by Shakespeare measure for measure act 3 . Tempest scene 2. Twelft night scene 2. Thank you for your wonderful educational literary channel.
Some of the poems I've came across, The Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath Dover Beach by Mattew Arnold The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe The Blessed Damozel by Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Has there been an example of an delusional character in the Ancient Greek Epics? Like, a character unconciously (like Browning's duke) misrepresenting their case? Just wondering if there was already that degree of character subjectivity.
Great question, Pieter! Though characters in epic poems and Greek tragedies can be complex, they tend to not display the same kind of delusional worldviews as Browning's personae. Does anyone else out there want to make a case for Oedipus?
