Thank you for your wonderful cultural literary channel. We appreciate your great efforts as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level, improve our English as well, and literature lovers too . Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American RUclips channels. I gathered main information about topic you mentioned briefly here it’s Bildungsroman in simple term is class of novel that depicts and explores manner in which protagonist develops morally and psychologically. It’s German word means novel of education or novel of formation. For example Johnny tremin by Esther Forbes catcher in rye by j. D Salinger , to kill mockingbird by Harper lee . Just flip through channel is amazing. I hope ican learn a lot from content .

Thank you so much for this. I am in the planning stages of writing an essay on The Girl with a Pearl Earring on this topic. This helped a lot. I also appreciate you putting the MLA citation on the web page.

So Bildungsroman is a German archaic term for a coming of age genre?

Great question, George! We would say sort of. Calling a novel a Bildungsroman rather than a coming-of-age story certainly calls attention to its historical as well as formal features, but we wouldn't use the negative term archaic. If we were to call Harry Potter a coming-of-age story, we would be calling attention to its plot. If we were to call it a Bildungsroman, we would be calling attention to its plot AND placing it alongside a common set of novels that begins in the 18th century. Why might we want to do so in a literary analysis? What kind of analysis would readers of that hypothetical essay or discussion expect would follow?
