  • Baa atoll Maalhos island today inaugurated a center to manage waste in the community.
The Environment Ministry said that it is a collaboration among Maldives Environment Project, Maalhos’ Council, the island’s Women’s Development Committee and Baa Atoll Conservation Fund (BACF).
The ministry’s Project Coordinator Ahmed Nizam said that the center located on Maalhos’ southern side will strive to dispose whatever waste can be rid off at island level before the rest of the garbage are transferred to Raa atoll Vandhoo island where waste disposal is carried out at regional level.
Before this venture, rubbish were literally burnt at the dump in Maalhos much to the dismay of residents and the Council said that this center will solve such discontent among the community.
The council also said that the dump will be dismantled once the center starts to function.
The ministry is installing mechanisms through which inhabited islands can strive to dispose waste at the island level to the maximum possible extent.
