- I can hold up to a 4 foot round object with ease.
Don't want to build one. This is the Vice Grip I was going to buy: amzn.to/2wCpNrc
Extra length chain: amzn.to/2wEbmTK
I used old #50 ATV chain, an old Vice Grip, a piece of 1"x1"-1/8" wall tubing and a piece or 1/4" flat steel to make this.
Amazon bought Tools I used in the video:
Angle Air Sander Die Grinder: amzn.to/2ysWmFp
Metal cutting Chop Saw: amzn.to/3lzzmfm
Angle Grinder Diamond Blade: amzn.to/2wJXvGl
Carbide burrs: amzn.to/2xURYSG
You come up with some of the coolest stuff I see on RUclips. Great job Moe!! I want to congratulate you on 100 k subscribers when you reach it. You're not that far away.
Thanks Man.
Very nice. Just used mine to hold the harmonic balancer on a Kia while removing the bolt. Chain barely fit. Was wondering about a larger version, but I like yours better than the bought versions. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Nice job . Seems a master link might allow you even greater versatility. I am a retired toolmaker who is always looking for useful things to make. Will subscribe. Thanks
That's a good idea. I think I'm going to make a second set with smaller/shorter chain and use a master link to extend it.
Great idea, I made a mini version from a pair of Vice-grips with a snapped top jaw, and used bicycle chain instead of motorcycle chain.
That's awesome!
Great idea and excellent instruction....This gent would have been a wonderful shop teacher...That's something sorely missing now a days....Learning skills that will get you a job, instead of useless degrees that get you nothing but in debt......I'm a semi retired tradesman, mostly HVAC and part time instructor and this video shows what using your mind can do.....Thanks to the pro that made it.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Man, another gold video. Cheap and easy to put together and I could have used that too for a very old propane cylinder I was opening recently!
Thanks. I've been scouring the garage for things I can use it on, but can only think of past things. I'm sure I'm be excited the first time I really need them.
Nicely done. I would make the Vise Grip handles much longer using a steel pipe for leverage. Using that small handle to hold a crankshaft pulley....won't go well.
I'm sure leverage will be used.
Sometimes you need to get up close.....to share the detailed stuff. Yes....we are competent..
But there are folks that just can't work it out.
10 seconds of an up close..
Would really help.(Like the teeth you just made to grip the chain..... and maybe a 5 sec close up of the tool resting on the bench of the important bits that make it work ) That's all.
Your vids are great....long time subscriber....but that's the only gripe I have.
Cheers
Thanks. I'll take the constructive criticism.
Thanks for the Idea....I have got to make one ..It would make a good oil filter wrench
Great thinking, it would make a great filter wrench.
Nice job Moe! Very handy tool to have.
Thanks Jimbo.
Very good tool, had instances when I needed it... wish I could weld
Thanks.
I'm gonna make a pair of them that is a great use for some old vise grips I have, thanks for the video I always enjoy them and learn something.
I agree the ones you buy the chain is too small. Great idea buddy - looks like I have a job to do. 😂
That is awesome! Im making one this weekend.
Another great video. You are a pleasure to watch.
Thanks.
I just love your videos and the extreme ingenuity you place into your projects.
Man that's going to be a handy tool. Nicely completed and thanks for the tutorial. I'm trying to think of any hand made tools that I actually made. You got me thinking now...
Thanks. I go to auctions and get a big kick out of tools people have made.
I like to see someone with an idea for an item you cant buy.... so you make one. WAY TO GO!
Thanks Man.
Always fun to see what your creating!
Thanks Man.
NEED ONE OF THAT FOR HYDRAULIC CYLINDER...NICE..THANKS
Thanks, I could have used it for a few hydraulic cylinders. Now I have one.
I've got a hammer with a steel pipe handle
Well done man. I can tell by looking at your shop you believe materials (like that chain) are as important to creating as tools are.
Thanks. I see value in almost every piece of random junk.
The best way to remove a propane valve that found is to ratchet strap the tank to tree and use a vise grip and a pipe and it works amazingly
That's a great idea.
I see these all the time, now?, I’ll probably make one after seeing your vid. I made the wire pliers from one of your vids and I use those for everything
making the claws was my favorite part, thumbs up Moe!
Thanks Robb.
Great build, I need to make one like that too,. About my home made tools I made power hammer, and a stainles steel polisher 9" for big sheet metal
Power hammer would be a fun tool to have.
Wow what a great idea Moe.
Very nice I think this will be more handy than people think. Great job
I needed them the other day. Now they can sit for a few months, but I think they'll be invaluable then.
necessity.......... the mother of invention or end of laziness LOL
i can see use for them already to remove oil filters that are too tight in car engines.
you wont need that often, but when you do... it will save your bacon.
Thanks, I hope so.
Man, where were you 3 weeks ago? I could have used one of these! I will be making mine soon.
Where'd you get the chain?
Nevermind, I see in the info beneath the video. I will build one this weekend!
I tried to use the thickest chain I had laying around so the claws could be as thick/strong as possible.
I have been wanting to attach a slide hammer to a pair of vice grips.
That would be neat.
Great video, nice tempo and informative! More films like this!
Handy tool btw!
Thanks. It was a fun little project.
sixtyfiveford: Hand built quality.
Thanks.
I'll have to try and make one thank you keep up the great videos
"How many pairs of Vise Grips do you really need?"
In my case usually 2 or 3 more than I have available.
I troll auctions and sales for the vintage Pre Irwin made in the US Vise Grips.
The new ones look the same and are better than some of the knock offs but not as good as the originals.
very interesting build, thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Cool tool Moe. I love how you work through the problems you encounter along the way. Just a thought, if you break the chain and use a master link, you could shorten it for smaller projects.
That might come in handy. I was just thinking I need another one with smaller chain for some of the smaller stuff.
Looks awesome I've got a pipe wrench like this with a long chain that is a lifesaver sometimes
Thanks Man.
Man, you're good. That's a great tool.
Thanks, I'm sure it'll come in handy.
Pretty good.
Cut one side of your square tubing out and the chain will lay in it instead of having to feed it through.
I wonder what the chain is called that they put on store bought ones?
That have knobs on the side for catches.
You could use a connector link and add as much chain as you need for about any project. Even adding to the 18 inch length commercially available units.
wait what??? ppl deal with short chains??? theyre chains theyre universal buy some links n make it longer... all u have to make sure is that u get the right size or pitch chain, but thats as simple as measuring the distance between the holes
Nice work! As usual.
Thanks Shaun.
Very Nice Build... Thanks for posting this...
Now that is EPIC AWESOME ! Thanks for the share Moe .. Gotta build on now man ..Thumbs up
Thanks Shawn. It was a fun little project.
Yep.. Ill have to copy that :-)
Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
The one I have the chain isn't very long.
I'm sure I'll good use out of the extra long chain.
That came out great.
Thanks Man.
Great tool!! Thats a lot of clamping force, imagine the total force given soooooo many contact points, thats sixtyfiveford, great tool!!!
Thanks, it seams to bite in really well. I guess the first project I need them for will really tell though.
Was just messing with a driven clutch on a mule that needs held so I can remove the bolt. No room for an impact in there. Thanks for this idea!
A driven clutch is exactly what I was working on the other day they drove me to make this.
Thanks. Valuable tool, Moe. I probably will make one too.
One tool I made in the 70s was an "axel puller". The bearing went out on my '68 GTO. The 650 Triumph high pipes were in the trunk, and some chain. The chain fit over the lug bolts! I took the exhaust pipe and slammed it along the chain until it stopped at the U in the high pipe. I must have been awful desperate. After a half dozen times, the axel came loose. And a parts store wasn't too far walking distance. It did surprising little damage to the 650 pipe.
Whatever it takes to get the job done! Your ingenuity is awesome.
Looks like it would work well for clamping skulls..............If one was so inclined to clamp skulls.
I worked in the trades for 5-6 years, mostly structural steel but all kinds of other things too........Seems I was always making some type of homemade tool....Custom Wrenches, Pry Bars, Bobcat Scooping Attachment, Jib Crane and Manlift for the Forklift....Even made a Bulletproof window/door for a Backhoe once.
Anything to make the job easier.
Awesome! True that about the homemade tools. There is just something really special about them.
Thanks.
Cool tool Moe. My paternal grandpa was a blacksmith and I still have the tin snips he made from a couple of files. How do you like the Porter Cable grinder? I just bought 3 of them.
I have a soft spot for Porter Cable. They made top of the line tools that I abused daily when I did professional woodworking in the late 90's-2000's. When they went belly up and sold out to Black and Decker(who also owns Dewalt), B&D decided to derate Porter Cable to allow Dewalt to become their top tier line and not have the two compete. Under Porter Cable are a few other randomly owned brands and Black and Decker as their bottom homeowner line. I have a good handful of commercial quality Dewalt tools and find the Porter Cable to be generally just an older Dewalt model that has been superseded. I really enjoy my PC cordless grinder but 4.0ah are a must for it to really work hard. I don't think anything comes close to it for the price.
Given the tolerance in the design, I'm guessing you could even do a double wrap on some stubborn cylinders for the extra grip.
I'll have to try that out. I'm not sure if the chain has enough slop to slide besides itself.
Heck of an idea and that t-shirt is pretty cool too!
You didn't have any Ford Blue paint on hand? Nice work '65! :))
Haha, Thanks Man.
I once modified an extra gear puller to use as a bicycle crank puller. Wouldn’t use it on a part you plan on reusing, because it will bend the sprocket. But since I was replacing it anyway it worked in a pinch.
Very Neat.
Really nice idea, Now i have to make one for my shop. thanks 65
Thanks Michael
Nice....like so many other tools....you may not need them often but when you do, we'll you know the rest of the story.
I keep forgetting I even have it. But one day it will be invaluable.
Great work!
Thanks.
Great tool Hand up Pal!😎
Nice job !! Can you think of a way to make one using a reinforced or thick leather belt ? Won't be better than what you did but would be lighter weight for portable tool carry. I can't find a long strap wrench anywhere. Probably would make a useful video as well.
Not a bad idea.
The connection to the leather running end would withstand its max tension if something like a sheet metal holding vice grip, with a few small grooves close together, was the fastener, holding the full width by compression.
Couldn't you just use a chain break to remove a pin and add more chain with a master link?
Or make like 5 of them that can all bind together like a chain of zip-ties! As long or as short as you could ever need!
Very nice!
Thanks Man.
One complaint........you can never have enough vice grips
True. There have been those clamping projects where a few more sets would have been nice.
great idea
Thanks.
Pretty slick I think the new ones are around 30 to 40 bucks
Thanks.
MAKE ONE WITH A CHEETAH BAR....
Looks nice, plan on making one very much like it, maybe a few of them.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. It has come in handy.
Neat build. I bet one day you will be just one link short. :)
For sure.
I agree I love home built tools
Very cool project
That tool will come in handy. You can never have enough tool ammo to get a job done!
My tool box is complaining and doesn't want to take any more tenants.
We made a 3 foot long 6"
Open end wrench out of 1/2 "
Steel plate
I can't imagine if you had to buy a 6" open end wrench off a tool truck how much it would cost. That's awesome.
sixtyfiveford Never thought of that. We had a 4" pipe union n a tight spot worked like charm
that's dedication
They are handy. I may try to make us a homemade one so we can have two.
I may need to make a second one for smaller stuff.
I dont think there is anything you cant make, that looks like a wicked tool for those "pain in the arse" jobs :-D.
Getting those hooked teeth just right looked like a pain, keeping as much metal as possible to make them strong.
Keeping as much metal on the teeth was my main concern. If it doesn't hold up, I'll have to find some stronger steel for the teeth.
I would imagine that an old lathe/capstan tool would have a higher carbon content, but cutting it would be harder :-(
yours is better
Thanks. It was a fun little project.
Hey, I got lucky & found & bought a 24" 5 HP snowblower the same exact model / line that my big monster is from, with very low hours on it, only had to get one tore for it, $48.00 included mounting, I only need to get back up to my powder coater & get two other pieces that I forgot to bring up with the initial haul. Both blowers are MTD SnoFlites, and both have Techumseh motors on them.
Do you think you're going to have it up and blowing this winter?
It was a mild winter here in MN last winter & we are due for another heavy winter (not ala Polar Vortex), but we are due according to the Farmer's Almanac.
Yup, I will have the old horse up & running before Winter. I have to pick up my "modified" scraper edge from the painter/powder coater yet, as I forgot to drop that off when I got everything else shot. I have been crazy busy with work as well.....
You must be thinking all the time! Nice one Moe
Thanks. It was a fun little evening project.
Cool tool :)
Another great video. Thanks
Thanks Man.
That looks like its nice an Hardy
Thanks Man.
uuuh damn it. already filmed this was about to edit it. . .
That doesn't matter, you should post it.
@@sixtyfiveford i just rushed my owl lamp video instead. Came out good I just hate doing art videos one after the other. Did you catch my fire breathing dragon last week?
Nice job Moe. Useful tool for sure.
Thanks. It was a fun project.
I've said it before--you're smarter than your tools, and in this case you MADE your own tool! Pretty slick, Moe!! Thanks man.
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Nice Always good to see you
Thanks Joe.
Nice!
Where’d y get the large print tape?
That's a Kobalt from Lowes. I bought it a year or so ago and have been really enjoying it. It has a lifetime warranty, printed on both sides and magnetic tips.
Nice! Sort of wish you used a newer vice grip with puffy handles. I like old tools.
I have a pair of puffy handle vice grips and I don't really like them. The handles slip around on the metal.
good job im making 1 ty
Thanks.
Never saw one of those or even thought of it but is a decent idea. You did a good job explaining the usefulness. Nice build.
Manick N Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome Wrench.
Thanks Michael. -Moe
Brilliant idea.
Thanks.
Sweet!
Thanks for watching.
Great
Thanks.
Cool
Thanks Man.
F*ckin awesome man;
I've never seen one. That is swEET!
Similar notion when dealing with water heaters. Although, rather than a chain and locking pliers, it's a ratchet-strap and a 2x4:

This would be perfect for my girl
