    00:00 Title
    June 18th, 2017
    00:05 I pick up some driftwood on the Brooklyn side of the East River, near the Williamsburg bridge.
    Well soaked driftwood is heavier than water.
    It sinks like a rock in water.
    I want to use this driftwood for my aquariums.
    Wash it clean under running water, scrubbing it with a brush.
    I put the driftwood in a 2 liter plastic bottle with a cut off top (the same way I make my nursery aquariums) • HD Aquarium DIY .
    This large driftwood piece has to be cut to fit underwater.
    This larger piece has to be cut with a saw.
    Use sandpaper or file the pieces.
    Fill up the tank with tap (chlorinated) water to cover all driftwood.
    01:15 Keep the driftwood underwater to cure.
    I add seed shrimps and some land moss • Land Moss in Aquarium to this nursery to check if they like the driftwood.
    July 2nd, 2017
    Depending on the size and the type of wood, it could take weeks for wood to fully saturate.
    The wood releases tannin in water as it gets "cured".
    01:52 Tannin is harmless to fish but makes water darker.
    July 8th, 2017
    I am going to use this small piece for my new nursery aquarium.
    July 14th, 2017
    02:07 I am going to use a larger piece of wood to set up another nursery.
    Notice how dark the water is in the old nursery compared to the new one.
    02:26 Here you can see the 3 nurseries with driftwood in chronological order (from left to right) as I set them up.
    Notice the water discoloration.
    July 30th, 2017
    I drain the dark water and refill tanks with clean water to reduce the discoloration once every week or two.
    Seed shrimps flourish in tanks with driftwood!
    Residue accumulates on the bottom of the tank as driftwood gets cured and eaten by seed shrimps.
    03:16 I remove residue during water changes.
    03:25 Eventually the amount of tannin leaching from wood gets insignificant and the water stays crystal clear.
    September 20th, 2017
    Here you can see all 3 nurseries with cured driftwood in the order in which I set them up, from left to right.
    On August 18th, 2017
    03:49 I added newborn guppies to this nursery in the middle with a small piece of driftwood.
    I have not changed the water since then in all 3 nurseries.
    As you can see the fish, seed shrimps, snails, and mosses are doing fine and the water stays clear.
    There are faster ways to cure driftwood and use it in aquariums.
    I will show it in future videos ;)
    Have fun and happy aquarium :)

    If you want to add river driftwood to your aquarium, sand-it-down then boil the driftwood, it helps release the tannins, so tannins will not be release into your aquarium. I do want to say that Betta fish like tannins its healthy for them.

    I always enjoy the planning, prep and follow through of your videos. This time also the scale caught my attention. I usually need driftwood for clients tanks that is in the scale of many feet not ones that fit in the palm of your hand.

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад

      Thank you!
      The scale - ha! For the scale reason I was reluctant to use driftwood in my nurseries! I was afraid it would take too much space in my tiny nurseries! Well, it works to certain point (size of the fish).
      I show in this video one way to get (prepare) driftwood for aquariums. There are other ways. Those ways are much faster. I am working on a video showing one of such techniques, but again it would cover relatively small pieces.
      Larger pieces of wood can be prepared using chemical treatment - I don't have plans to use it in nearest future. Or you may cut large piece on smaller parts for treatment and then assemble them back to a large piece. I believe it would be the most efficient way. Think about it as of lego blocks ;)

      Wood gets soaked in water even without boiling it. Hot water gets in wood faster than cold water because molecules move faster in higher temperature.

    I like the videos but hate that u don't talk . but I have a few questions ....do u change the water in the jars from time to time if they don't have fish in them ? and also when trying to get a peace Lilly to convert do u just leave one leaf on out of water and take the rest off ? also if u dont have fish in them do u put ferts in them to promote growth ?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +2

      I prefer to spare you from my accent and talk in videos where it is absolutely necessary ;)
      The last time I changed (drain) water from my aquarium was 11 months ago. I stopped changing water in all my aquariums from beginning of 2017. I've done water changes before weekly and monthly up to 20% in aquariums with fish. The nursery without fish don't need it in my experience. Though, it is necessary to add water as it evaporates! You may want to check videos in this playlist for more details on my previous and present aquarium fish care routine: ruclips.net/video/VyjeDFyoDb8/видео.html
      I did grow Peace lily underwater as you said: first leaving one leaf above water; cut off that leaf after new leaves sprouted underwater. I am working on update for growing Peace lily underwater. I got it growing underwater from a stub of a root! You have to see it - the new plant is tiny and grows very slow.
      I don't put any ferts in aquariums with or without fish. But, there are snails and seed shrimps - they do ;) Plants grow better in aquariums with fish in my settings.
      All the best!

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +3

      PS: I keep most of my aquariums without fish on a windowsill exposed to direct sunlight. Move them away when there are too much algae or when I add fish.

      I had some moss in a jar of water just to see if it would grow or even live under water because I thought about eventually putting it in my 75 gallon planted tank on some driftwood . it is growing but the water started smelling really bad after about 2 weeks that's y I asked about water changes . ur videos have inspired me to try different plants 😊 I have a potted peace Lilly plant that needed repotted so I took a clump of it and put it in a vase of water but it had a bunch of stems coming out of one clump so I didn't know if I should cut all the stems off except for 1 or leave them all on . I'm hoping to get underwater growth off it so I can submerge it in my 75 gallon take also. but thanks for the info and ill check out the video u linked .
      ps: I bet ur accent isn't that bad 😊

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +1

      WE are doing exactly the same way with moth! Though, I keep it initially in disposable plastic cups at least for a week. I am making video to show it in some more details. Samples of some moss gets stinky. It even happens to the type of moss that I already know is growing underwater. Suppose it is due to some dirt or insects gets stuck in the moss sample. It could be the reason. I don't change water in those cups. Get rid of them and set up a new nursery with different sample of moss.
      About the Peace lily...I would let those new stems to grow underwater without cutting the old leaves that grow above water. It takes long time for leaves to grow underwater! I think the old leaves give energy for new leaves to grow faster. One leaf cannot do as many would (though, I did that way ;) Watch for a group of 3 or more new underwater leaves that you can cut off in one chunk with some roots. Those couple plants that I grow underwater did not change much from the time I published the last video about them! They look healthy but I don't notice any gain in the size of leaves for months. It suits me very well - there is no work for me to do :))
      My accent is not bad at all - it is great! It is so great that my kids ask me to shut up every time I sing :)
      I remember they used to beg me to sing every night to fall asleep fast ;)

    Hey, one question, do you have any way to key my snail keeps escaping. When they do they will die

    • @4me
      @4me  4 года назад +1

      Pond snails breathe atmospheric air. And that is the main reason they may climb out of water. Preventing them from doing it will kill them for sure. Also, there could be something in the water that they want to avoid - looking for food, or run away from predators, or water quality among other things that may force them out.
      Some of them may get lost and dry out this way, but many more survive. So, let them go the way they do. And when you see one is climb to far just push it back into water - that's what I do ;)

      You should be able to find them in your local pond, or at least similar creatures. Try scooping up some algae or vegetation, you will probably be able to catch some cool stuff!

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the question!!
      I love seed shrimps! I keep them in separate nurseries to breed (they breed without any help ;) and populate all my aquariums with them. Initially I got them from ponds of Central park of NYC. You may find them in freshwater ponds, lakes and rivers during warm season. It's easier to catch them (with many other critters) by picking the water plants. Heisenberg guppies will do well. Just make sure its cycled and you do regular water changes with dechlorinated water. 2-4 guppies should do fine. I have 2 guppies in a 1 liter food storage container in a window that has 1/4 inch gravel with small plants. They have been a live for several months now. I got the idea from this channel.

      Yes you can. It would take longer to prepare the wood, nevertheless it is possible.
      You have to sink (anchor it with something heavy) a desirable piece of wood into water and leave it there for...long. Change water as necessary (as tannin leach into water). Check this video for more details: ruclips.net/video/feXcfcvKVoQ/видео.html

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад

      Thank you for questions!
      Water evaporates from driftwood left in open air. Keep your driftwood in water all the time for it to be soaked. Otherwise it would float until it gets soaked again.
      It is safe for aquarium. Tannin makes water yellow or brown. It is similar to tea. However, the yellow color is something you may want to get rid off. Boiling driftwood speed ups releasing of tannin from the wood.
      Alternatively, you may keep driftwood fully submerged in a jar of water changing the water when it gets yellowish. Eventually you will get rid of tannin, then you can place this driftwood in an aquarium. Boiling speeds up this process greatly.
      Best regards!

      Thanks for yr advice. When i boiled driftwood i boiled it for more than 3 hours both side. water change into tea color also. after finish boiled i put it in cold water it sink at that time. i put it in for one day in cold water. after finish i clean drift wood n put outside the water. after two weeks when i put it in aquarium it not sink float in water. i put it into the water with the help of stones. after oneday i see water change little into yellow color not totally yellow but seen yellow. my question is i can use this driftwood or not? it is safe for fish or not? what can i do tell me.

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад

      Tannin (it is what makes water yellow) is harmless - it is safe to use in aquariums. Though if you want to get rid of that color than you may boil it again or keep it underwater until it gets clear (changing water as necessary). The larger driftwood the longer it takes to reduce tannin (yellow).

    Update on your dwarf guppy breeding??? Love your videos!

    • @4me

      Thank you!
      I've been thinking about making update on guppies. In two weeks is coming video about guppy gender where you may see the oldest couple and some young guppies of different age and sizes. I am not sure when is the next video and what it will cover yet. But you may expect anniversary releases and I will cover as well any important events (positive or negative) that may come along the way. The 2 breeding couples so far have been dropping babies on less or more regular intervals. I keep updated record on all birthdays here: docs.google.com/document/d/1lfHyYHmW2u-9aYqA8X19pGkENQpSqnF9w1bvg9Nvha0/pub
      You may notice all aquariums with fish shown in any of my videos also have indicated the birthday of fish on top of the tank. That is another way to see fish that was not covered in videos about them ;)
      PS: There are huge differences in size of babies. I have 5 month old measuring about 1 cm, and 1 month old measuring about 2 cm! All of them are first generation. I already start moving them in new breeding pairs - hope to get second generation in this Winter.

    Just wondering y driftwood?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +3

      I had many questions about driftwood in the past year. This my video-answer on some of them.
      Aquarium benefits in many ways from driftwood. I use it mostly to create desirable landscape. Seed shrimps use it as food source and place to hide. Small fish use it also as hiding place (not in my nurseries thought). Also, driftwood affects chemical quality of water - improving it for may aqua pets. Though, not all of them may like it.

    • @scsi_joe
      @scsi_joe 6 лет назад +2

      Driftwood lowers pH (makes water more acidic and softer). This can be good sometimes. Like for example if your tap water is too hard and alkaline (high pH). That is just one of the benefits. It's best to test it on small creatures though first, as Michael did. Not all underwater life likes higher acidity and soft water. Also there may be toxins present that your particular type of wood releases, naturally that you can't get rid of through curing. These can be harmful to aquatic life. But usually any wood you find outside is fine.

      @@rp101aquatics6 partially. I include some footage about seed shrimps in this video: ruclips.net/video/ZrQKfd8T2n4/видео.html
      Couple things to notice: I did not put seed shrimp purposely in those aquariums.
      The temperature in those aquariums on windowsill go way above what fish can tolerate - seed shrimps survive!
      There is another video to check on in the same regards: ruclips.net/video/mCHPSl90VYo/видео.html
      PS: seed shrimp are used by paleontologists to identify age of fossils - they are real living dinosaurs of this world! They survived everything that happened on our planet so far ;)

      My music choice is limited to what is available at RUclips audio library for creators - I am not a musician :( And you are right - watching it without any music (on a mute) it's kind of dump. There is no much I can do about it...I turn down sound in RUclips player and listen to my favorite music in different window or using different player. It works in a pinch on PC - I am not sure if you can do it on mobile thought.
