Atx will cream ctx3030 any day of the week!! learn your machine bud. no Frequency scan done or ground balance prior to sweeping.... Basic set up dude. top effort!!
I have owned both and given alot of time to the ATX. I'm in the UK and the ATX depth is unmatched and the CTX wont be near it. BUT you cant get away from the fact you will dig ALOT of trash with it. ATX iron check works about 50/50 and none on the mono. Just be prepared to be frustrated with it for the advantage of depth. CTX is a great machine and the target ID, seperation and display is amazing. Yes you wont get the depth of the ATX but most finds are only 12" or so down. So you have to ask yourself do you want a deep machine and spend all day digging rubbish on the off chance of a find or an average depth machine but dig little to no trash? I had my ATX months on one field and found nothing but iron. Took ctx on and within 20mins found gold and coins. Also getting away from the performance, the sliding stems on the ATX are a pain to clean especially on wet sand and they both are not quick for changing the coils. But I still have the 3030 and I dont have the ATX. Good luck all.
Double check the Gain setting on ctx. Freshly buried coins are about as good as air test. Which means, depth will not be as accurate compared to the coin that had acclimated to the surrounding soil for a couple months. I regularly dig coins at 8" & have dug 9.5+", but not too often, with the ctx. Good luck.
You might need a little more time on the detector before doing these test. I did the same thing about 2 weeks after getting the ctx. That was way too soon, because I hadn't learned the detector enough. Keep at it. Try 50CO, sensitivity at 25, Gain 24, with a pattern that blocks iron at 26.
You probably set the threshold too high. It 'overrules' the sound of the find. The threshold should be barely audible. You could also try using the 50 CO tone. In some soil it gives a clearer signal than the combined tones. I would advise you to buy the 17" coil. It is great and I think it is more of a match to the huge ATX coil. ( I have used it in a meadow near my home in The Netherlands and it detected a very small and thin silver coin (a silver 'duit' from the year 1646) at a depth of 12 inches underneath(!) pieces of barbed wire and between shards of a cast iron kettle.) Using 50 tones CO, recovery deep 'on' recovery fast 'off', ferrous coin, 'Tadpole' discrimination. But I'm convinced the standard coil should do the trick at 8 to 10 inches.
Most coins rings and even gold nuggets will be at 4 to 8 inchs no need for a detector that goes 12 - 18 inches and yes there will be treasures there but be ready for lots of digging so when you go out you're either going shallow to mid digs or you are going real deep digs all is in a days work
Nice to see the power of the pi machines but useless in trashy areas. Ctx is an overcomplicated machine and not even close to the deep of the atx. Only useful in trash loaded field. But overcomplicated... you can do the same with a nokta simplex for 300.- new.

Do all minelabs make constant noise? I'm looking at a gpz 7000, but that constant noise would drive me crazy. I'm used to detectors you csn adjust threshold to quiet.
Threshold is up WAAAAY to high!! The CTX manual adoes a bad job explaining threshold setting. The CTX has an audible threshold. You need to turn the threshold DOWN until it's barely audible. It should NOT be a loud buzz, but sound like a faint hum. If you wear head phones, you can drop it further. When the threshold is set to high (loud) small/deep targets are blocked out.

A trade off for that flat out depth is you have no idea what you’re digging. CTX is marketed as a do it all machine, but is primarily a silver magnet and beach detector with world class discrimination matrix. CTX is not sensitive to small gold and micro jewelry like the ATX. Both worth owning in their own right.

Nothing wrong with either of your detectors. A dime at a *real, measured* ten inches is ridiculous. All these people who claim "yeah I get dimes at ten inches all the time!" - fisherman's rulers. For a PI or a VLF, the difference in depth between a freshly buried target and one that's been sitting long enough for the "halo" to form is minimal. People fall back on it all the time when their detector won't do something they claim it can - "oh! It wasn't buried for long enough!" Depth claims are just comical these days. Do yourself a favor and bring a ruler with you next time you hunt. A ruler, not your pinpointer, an actual ruler, and measure the depth of your targets. You will be surprised, and probably eventually end up saying "wow that dime at six inches was a really weak signal, glad I dug it." If it means anything to you, there is a video showing the CTX is capable of getting a dime at 8 inches in the right conditions. The youtube user who made the video is detectorcomparisons

(In dry sand on a beach) I found an old pull tab at a depth of 16 inches. (No ruler, twice the length of my pinpointer). Who can explain that sometimes you find nothing at zero depth and sometimes you find at he same place with the same settings alle kinds of nice finds?
The moist or wet soil will add a bit extra depth , even if you gain only 1cm it can be enough to get those coins that were out of reach in the dry ground , seriously I have seen hammered out patches of land produce lots of coins after a good rainfall.
You were getting a signal at ten with the Garrett while saying that you were hearing nothing. I suggest you learn your settings better. Ground balance DOES help! Also you had your sens set too high while you were running around your yard. Lower sens on the Garrett when swinging it around your yard.
