Hey, awesome video ! She-Hulk makes me cringe as a feminist. It's just one more awfully written "women empowerment" series. I just want to add something. Yes, it depicts sexism in an awful way. But at the same time, most women do suffer from fear and anger on a daily basis. Not because some guy mansplains something but more like when we inevitably run into a creep in the subway or in the street. And 1 out of 3 women have been raped soooo they got the fear and anger right but not the real reasons. If they really wanted to depict what women have to go through they should've made a drama about sexual assault imo

Hey there, first time on your channel, and just wanted to say something, I paused, at about :45 seconds into your video to come type this. You did such a good job with this 45 seconds, so much so, that it illustrates the point so well, I don't think I will really need much convincing from the rest of the video on how this is gonna add up (I am of course gonna finish it now.)
I just wanted to applaud you, or your editor or both for the collaboration on that, because man that was a really good way to show just the (or likely, what amounts to a) point without any BS. Just some random validation from a stranger bouncing through the internet, that intro bit alone got yah at least one sub!

Of course she’s going to explain to him because he needs to learn from someone that hasn’t gone through any of the learning process he has!! Plus, she has to control her anger more than him duhhhh. Possibly growing up in the foster system. Becoming the Hulk causing collateral damage and possible harm to innocents. Living on the run for years. All the trials and tribulations as an Avenger, losing friends and comrades etc etc.

The really annoying thing is that it's very out of character for Jen Walters to feel that way. I think this is because marvel doesn’t have full control of The Hulk so they don’t care about him amd they just throw him under the bus , around the bus, through the mud , amd then tell him to be in someone else’s storyline. It’s sad but the other people are not going to ever let him go amd therefore no one can do productive things with his origins or the story. Not to mention the guy in charge of the military who dedicated his existence to hunting him down is the father of the woman he loved, Betty. Also that after Betty, the other woman he loved in the universe was Black Widow, who you know... died. If they actually gave two shits about Bruce they'd use the weight of all those losses to fuel his desperation into saving his dying cousin's life (like in the comic). But, women power and all that bs can't have Bruce save his last living family member. She has to save him via ~bullshittery~ Being saved is a weakness after all.

Let her be narcissistic, acting like she's the victim of everything, abuse her power, until she quickly really looses the control over her emotions, goes wild, and has to face consequences of her actions, that she has to grow above. Stubborn at first, the more she fails, the more she can get better. And than when she does, grows up to be healthy empathetic hero.

The most intriguing part about Jen's condescension towards Bruce in the scene where she explains her goddess-level anger management skills is how unintentionally revealing it is regarding the writers' attitude towards men. It would be one thing if Jen had complained about cat calling and 'mansplaining' to some sexist middle-management type. That would make the condescension at least more understandable, if still heavy-headed. But the fact that she said it to Bruce, who has faced far grander difficulties and far greater injustices than her, exposes the writers' view that there's no difference between Bruce and some sexist middle-management type as far as the writers of the show are concerned. Individual struggles, choices, and experiences mean nothing. Regardless of what Bruce has done or gone through, regardless of how much he has grown, he will never be good enough. He deserves to be lectured at, corrected, and put in his place simply because he is a man.

What is terrifying is how deeply these things have sunk into real life. When I married my Wife in 2008, I had already been suffering Chronic Pain for 15 years due to an unknown cause (eventually discovered in 2013- Inoperable Spinal Damage.) She repeatedly insisted she could handle it. I said it could get worse. That didn't matter. She 'loved me'.
Because of the neurological damage, 'Bedroom Time' was incredibly difficult for me. Like a Car with a Broken Transmission, rev that engine all you want, the car is NOT moving. But still, I DID love her, so I pushed myself to the edge of a nervous breakdown trying to meet her needs. I couldn't even get close, and in 2014, she had decided she'd had enough of my 'Selfishness and Self-Centeredness.' and decided that nothing was better than not enough, so ended all intimacy between us.
Not only that, but instead of just admitting she can't (or won't) deal with having a disabled Husband, she has created a narrative where I am now a 'Selfish, Betraying, Gold-Digging, Sexist, Racist, Transphobe, Nazi.' (Also admitting I have not changed since we married.) I am now almost totally disabled and have needed to be in an assisted living facility for years, but she just recently berated me for not 'Providing for her', despite the fact she is in the top 7% of US Wage Earners and has never needed any money I could bring to the table.
The nightmare my life has been for so long is just an irritating annoyance to her. She is finally divorcing me, and I live in daily anxiety about how I am going to survive when I am finally kicked to the curb.

@@nokturn882 I'd add to that that the society in which they became Hulks is really different. When Hulk popped out (as a menace btw) heroes weren't that much of a thing. When She-Hulk became a thing it's like "she doesn't feel menacing compared to the many alien attacks we've got in the past years" and it's obviously mediatised.
Also I don't think she "used" Hulk's name as a levrage. It's more like "people put an etiquette on me, imma use it".
They don't come from the same background and it's what *could've* made her character interesting.
Still, I feel the fact that Marvel is heading in a really different direction that feels more about getting new fans into Marvel rather than pleasing the audiance which is frustrating when you consider that it's supposed to be interconnected stories and so you kinda have to watch it without liking it if you are interested by the new phase they are unwrapping.
Nowdays I see Marvel as a dog owner treating us as such making series that you may or not like and giving us little treats of connections from this to that movie or serie, episode after episodes to keep us watching shit we don't enjoy.
How many Raimi fans went to watch Doctor Strange or Tobey fans went to see Spiderman:NWH and now how many daredevil fans are going to wait to see Daredevil on their screen even if they don't like She-Hulk... or Megan the Stallion (which I am proud of for being in the show) fans which again bring traction to Marvel from people who aren't into it usually. Now they start vanilla with a geekey looking lawyer to a big green attractive powerful lawyer (kinda basic usual girl character trope teens used to watch in the 2000s) and they might peek more and more to see if she is there, and start liking what thhey do with that other character etc... I mean I did the same and started watching all the important movies knowing that Infinity Wars was coming and now I feel like Disney's puppy.
Anyway, it's the beggining of a new phase with new heroes, a new story and a bigger fanbase for Disney but I feel like the fans are going to be less engaged and are going to watch just to see well written stories get destoyed while their main character doesn't have anything to do with their own serie like Wanda.

5:14 My blood boiled just seeing that video clip soundless. For those who don't know, that is Amy Schumer taunting Steve-O about his close friend Ryan Dunn dying, saying she knew he wished he died instead, and telling him everybody felt the same way.
From my understanding, Ryan Dunn was his best friend Steve-O had something like survivor's guilt plaguing him, and losing Ryan was something that was motivating him to be worthy of being still alive after all that had happened. It was a touchy subject as, frankly, people headbutt a bullet over a lot less than what Steve-O was going through.
The camera looked right at Steve-O after she said her bit to him, and you could see him dying inside. It was heartbreaking, and half the audience laughed without even understanding what was happening, adding to the trauma. After some time, Steve-O came out and put the fires out with the idea that 'she was trying to be funny, it's okay, I'm okay, let's let it go', being an absolute legend. Him publicly requesting people forgive her is probably the only reason she has a career worth anything anymore.
Amy Schumer isn't just 'unfunny'. She's an absolute piece of trash. All her feminist politics are propaganda as well, and anybody who is in the know about that is aware she knows it too. She's hurting people and lying to further her career day-by-day.

I want to go on a journey with them and see them become a stronger person on the other end. Jen was a meek and timid woman, with no confidence in herself, not in her job and especially not in her social life. Becoming She Hulk changed all that as suddenly she was brimming with confidence. She was smart, sassy and was not ashamed with how good she looked.
She never complained about the attention men gave her, that only started happening in recent comics. She loved the attention and would often seek it out. It made her a better lawyer and better person cause she wasn't afraid to put herself out there.
But she was also a compassionate person and would always do her best to use her skills as a lawyer to help people and ensure everyone gets a fair trial. Even villains. Not only that, she deeply loved her cousin Bruce. She knew what he went through and it hurts her to know that she couldn't do anything to save him from the trauma hes endured.
Thats what made She Hulk a good character. She wasn't meant to be a mouthpiece for Feminist writers to put down men. She was meant to be an inspiration for young women to be confident in themselves and not be afraid to put themselves out there in the world.

A ton of depth could have been added to Walters' character by having her have been a victim of rape or abuse. Her abuser getting off easy in court would be a compelling reason for her to seek a career in law, and a massive drive for her to excel in it. It could also create in her an above-normal need for bodily autonomy and perception of threats to that.
With this, the potential assault threatened by catcalling would trigger fears bolstered by trauma, and peers perceiving her as overly-emotional or unprofessional would be serious threats to her efforts and ability to protect people from what she went through. Additionally, a moral struggle could be explored as she tightropes between protecting victims and exacting vengeance on potential effigies of her abuser.
Another interesting change would be that the women who joke about domestic abuse and coerce her into letting them alter her appearance could be just as threatening, if not more, than the men she encounters afterward, changing the message from "men bad" to "removing autonomy is wrong regardless of intent"
With a focus on consent and autonomy, Bruce rescuing her from the car crash and transfusing his own blood into her to save her life would be much easier to perceive as a violation (for both character and audience), and the frequent, involuntary transformation would be much more distressing.
Her struggle with the hulk could be turned into an incredible allegory for processing trauma and recovering from abuse, but instead we got a legal comedy.
She-Hulk could be and should have been so much more.

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus Год назад +1

Giving She-Hulk past trauma would have fundamentally altered her character. The reason Jen Walters and She-Hulk are one and the same mentally is because she's well adjusted and doesn't have any hang-ups. That's why suddenly making her have repressed anger doesn't work. If she was that mad all the time her Hulk form would be more like her cousins. If they needed to give her issues they could have explored the dichotomy between the way Jen Walters looks and the beauty of She-Hulk.
She-Hulk is supposed to be a fun character and I personally like that about her. That's not to say you can't serious stories about her because you can. I don't think herself needs to be a good person who likes to help people at both of her jobs.

I don' t think most of the commenters here get the point of the ironic jokes they make. The majority of complaints about progressiveness aren't just for sake of adding them to please the audience, it's using both sides of that spectrum of folks that are either super , terroists-like, against it or extremely too for it to where it just hurts any right cause. I think this is looking TOO deep into things that don't need to be put under a microscope and at the same time also looking at other things with a super careless and surface judgment. The inconsistent breakdown of all these points he made are simply just made to be a sinic for his own sake. I get it, I can be like that at times but I can take the time and reflect on my own judgement of irrelevant things in my life like a show that just isn't for me. I don't make an entire essay to try and fish for a party of folks to agree with me. I just have my own opinions and move on about my day. This took him days, maybe weeks, to make and edit and even a day alone is already too much to be sinical about a show you just don't enjoy and still continue to watch. It'd be like me complaining about the horribly overrated show called Game of Thrones and then completely taking the time to make a whole essay on why I don't like it just to have a party of other morons that jump on my dick about how much I hate Game of Thrones. I don't like the show and never did because it was boring and lazy with the only real reason I kept watching was that it had amazing fight scenes and gore for my liking. Other than that, the characters were OK but had wasted potential. That said, I don't care enough to make a video or even write any longer than two sentences on why I don't like a show or film. I love she-hulk cause it's kind of really making a joke of those that literally think it's cheesy or contradictory because that's the target they hit with the jokes the characters make. lol. If you can't see it then you're part of that joke.

God this could have been such an interesting commentary about emotional repression in women, in particular anger (or even sexuality as well). It could have been a series long arc: At first she represses She-Hulk successfully enough that they think it didn't transfer, then it starts coming out when she's trying to be nice at work and she panics and hides. Then they try to train and she can't let it go, she can't release her anger. Turns out she's been repressing and internalising her anger for so long she doesn't know how. Then finally it comes out publicly in a case and she discovers that while some people hate it, others think she's amazing and she learns how to 'get angry' in a confident way. It would have been a great commentary on how men and women can deal with anger in different ways (toxic masculinity vs. toxic femininity). You could start her off as an underconfident 'nice girl' with control issues and passive aggressive tendencies, then slowly morph her to the sexy and confident she-hulk. The problem is they started her off as a confident women so she has nowhere to go. I'm so disappointed by this huge missed opportunity!

If she had that much repressed anger her She-Hulk form would be like her cousin's.
For inner conflict the comics this show (allegedly) uses as inspiration explored the dichotomy between small, kind of mousey Jen and beautiful vivacious She-Hulk. She comes to realize being She-Hulk is kind of like a drug for her when she begins to spend entire says in that form.
All that being said She-Hulk isn't and hasn't been a character used to explore social or psychological issues and I think trying to do so with the ham-fisted feminism was to the show's detriment. She-Hulk is a fun character and most of her solo series feature more comedy than other comic books. One of the biggest sources of humor is watching her deal with how insane the legal system is in the Marvel Comics universe while acting as a public defender for tons of z-list villains. Unfortunately the writers of the show couldn't be bothered to come up with funny and interesting courtroom scenes. Their failure to do so and apparent desire to avoid having She-Hulk be an actual superhero doomed the show. The comic book Jen Walter is smart, funny and sexy but she's also a compassionate woman who cares about the world around her and wants to make it a better place. Being a public defender and superhero allows her to do that at both of her jobs. The shallow narcissist of this show is nothing like Jen Walters should be.

Instead of the Infinity Gauntlet, with its off the charts gamma radiation, crippling Hulk, it should have overpowered him into Savage Hulk - bigger, stronger than we've seen. This would have been a great contrast to the meek Hulk seen during the rest of the movie. He could then have his revenge 1 v 1 against Thanos where he kicks Thanos' ass and is only stopped by Thanks using the Infinity Stones. Much more satisfying than Cpt Marvel no-selling a headbutt from Thanos.

i wanna believe they will do him justice because they know people love Daredevil and will go apeshit if he is heavily tainted by this circus, like hulk and thor were, also it wouldn't make sense if he is a clown in this one and then is written like a sigma male in his own solo series, which is suppoused to be in darker tone. but it's not likely. all of these shows felt like they were testing the ground - how far they can go.

The scene where Jennifer talks about controlling her anger really annoys me. I’m really hating how when things like this happens, the character she’s talking to, who usually tend to be men get their trauma and hardships ignored or played for laughs. Bruce really sat back and let her say she has it harder basically, and said nothing about seeing his father kill his mom, having to kill his father, forming 2 personalities because of abuse, trying to delete himself, going to war with his first loves father who was a military general, losing Natasha, not knowing how to control a power he didn’t want until now although he was responsible for literally leveling cities, etc. Despite all of that, he’s the calmest he’s ever been. Some of my favorite TV shows of all time, FMAB, AOT, Avatar the Last Airbender, Stranger Things, have strong male leads but also female characters that shine. and they shine NOT because they are female, but because they are great CHARACTERS, who happen to be girls. They don't complain about their struggles, both the guys and girls in the show suffer equally, and no one is shocked when the girls carry their own weight.
I couldn't imagine enjoying a show where, say Winry from FMAB, lectures Ed and Al about how hard her life is as a female automail mechanic, where her coworkers don't trust her. Meanwhile, Edward is missing two limbs and his brother doesn't have his own body. Its the same as telling Bruce, "yeah, can't imagine why you were angry or depressed all these years, being different and isolated, having to go through these things all on your own. I was getting catcalled so..." Like fuck off.
Women can have real problems too. getting catcalled is an annoyance, but it does not *define* She-Hulk. Bruce's past *defines* Hulk. And if it really does define her, then it shows she wasn't written as a character first, but a female with no story.

As a woman, I completely agree. These writers made the most trivial concerns women have the focal point and the justification she has for why she can choke down rage? Ridiculous!
Black Widow was my absolute favorite of the cinematic universe because more often than not it was her cunning and her female wiles that got her out of situations. She was a female hero who embraced femininity and used it to her advantage. She solved her problems the way a woman would and didn't immediately brute force her way through situations. She also had her reproductive ability stripped away from her. And whether you want to have children or not, and regardless of how you feel about motherhood and gender roles, your heart breaks for her because you realize she didn't even have the choice. That is a uniquely feminine pain. Her character is beautifully written and painfully underused and her death hurt me the most.

See, in the comics... The reason she-hulk controlled her state with so much more ease was because her transformation wasn't as severe as Bruce's. She wasn't as strong, fast and resistant as the Hulk, but she retained her personality and intelligence. She-hulk is a manifestation of Jen's idea of an ideal self; strong, gorgeous, confident, in contrast to Jen who was usually meek, shy, and of average look. But in this show, she hulk is just... A physical buff. No psychological effect at all.

At this point, Bruce isn’t alone because of being the Hulk. Everyone he cared about or was close to has died or is off planet. It’s so callous of Jen to throw his isolation in his face, as if he never had any connections or pushed them away through his own volition. Tony’s dead, Cap is old (and maybe dead), Valkyrie and Thor are light years away, and Natasha was sacrificed for the soul stone.

The fact that they changed the very simple way she gets the Hulk powers, was enough for me start to losing interest. It would’ve been so easy and much more realistic for the crash to knock them both unconscious with Jennfier being seriously wounded. The doctors could’ve then began transfusing Banner’s blood without realizing who he is (just that he’s a compatible donor to her), then Jennifer would turn into She-Hulk, awakening Bruce, to then run out of the hospital in terror & anger with Banner Hulk quickly chasing her down and calming her. That would’ve not only been much more compelling, but it could’ve established their relationship and familial bond. Not to mention it could’ve provided us with some great background on Bruce’s understanding and expertise around the Hulk and how he was able to achieve his “symbiosis” with Hulk in Endgame (which was never truly explained).

Bruce Banners first (and im not sure if its the most canonical) backstory was he was so intelligent smart and aware at such a young age his father would beat and abuse him and his mother until eventually his father shot and killed his mother in front of him. THAT was when the Hulk was born in his mind, the gamma radiation incident he was subjected to MADE in physical the Hulk. We instantly start Bruce as a man who didnt have a chance since birth, lacking social and vocal norms in society, hunted by a government (tried to commit suicide), was being stalked by a "government" power no matter where he went in the world, tries and tries to help people less fortunate them him, falls in love but leaves her out of fear of hurting her again, winds up in space, meets the man WHO KILLS TRILLIONS and even THE HULK CANT stop to then finally be humbled by the fact out of everyone he couldnt bring back he SPECIFICALLY tried to bring back Natasha. That is a character whos suffered and is strong at staying even functional. Jen goes literally NOWHERE in terms of pain trauma loss and humility but shes stronger then Bruce. Make the MCU meaningful and worth watching again.

I must vehemently disagree. Every man in the show was either an idiot or a caricature. And Jennifer Walters is completely obnoxious and unlikable. And that’s fine, even for a main character, but nobody else in the show is likable either.
If a man were to act the way she did we would calls that toxic masculinity. but when a woman acts in that same way what do we call it? Brave? Strong? Powerful? No, I say we call it what it is. Women can behave toxically masculine too. I’m all for equality.
