Always great to see Rick! The key with learning to think like a jazz guitarist I think is getting away from thinking from the root of a chord and realising how melody works over given chord changes. When I got into jazz I wish I'd been taught to "encase" key notes of a chord with chromaticism first rather than first learning dozens of modes and scales as a lot of teachers start with. To any rock player who wants to get into jazz I would start with a basic 7 chord like A7, get away from thinking from the root and "A mixolydian" or "A pentatonic" and just hold down the chord, notice the key tones are the major third, the fifth and the flat 7, so C#, E and G.
A good exercise to start with is landing on the fifth (E) and aim to move from that to the major third (C#) with a chromatic line and encasing the note, so two chromatic notes down and one below the target note so E, E flat, D, then C up to C# and then ending on the flat 7 (G), so you've really "outlined" the chord and not a root note in sight. Figure that out it in all 12 keys and incorporate it into your usual stuff over a standard blues progression and you're already thinking and sounding more like a jazz player. Hope that helps somebody, it frustrated me for a long time that nobody taught me that first off!

Best advice on RUclips for musicians of all calibers and skill levels. "Make THE (chord) CHANGES your focus". That should be on a T-Shirt so we remember it every time we play. Papastache102 just did a brilliant vid about this with Guthrie Trapp.

Jens Larson’s channel is the place to go for the jazz stuff, Beato is a genius and likes to maintain the mystique by chucking so much stuff at you that there isn’t ebough time to take it in. Either that or he is from an advanced alien civilization and doesn’t understand how to break it down for we earthlings. Larson breaks it down and makes sense of it all..... i like the way Pete immediately goes for demystifying and picks up on the key elements of chromatic passing notes and the importance of learning arpeggios. After 40 years as a mediocre amateur rock player I spent lockdown learning arpeggios and it’s like everything makes sense for the first time ever. Great video, thanks gentlemen. Sounded like a nice bit of Joe Pas about halfway through... nice.

Two of my favorites in one video!
I studied with a jazz guy for a few years in my early 20's. I find the big thing I took away from it was trying to play so you hear the chord changes in my solos. I'm still very much a rock player, using lots of pentatonic patterns, but once I get comfortable with the chord progressions I focus less on scales and approach my solos from chord tones. I basically visualize arpeggios and add passing tones around the chord tones. I also find myself often using hammer ones and pull offs and sliding into notes in much the same way a jazz player does.
Rick was just showing off. . . No prob - he earned it.
Much respect for jazz guitar players. Just remebered being humiliated on the first day of my jazz improv class, really life changing.

I listened to PT2 during a long drive today, and there's a TON of interesting outside the box playing on it. PT knows theory, and must intentionally create his riffs outside the diatonic 7 chords. A unique take on progressions, resulting in unique songs. Amazing tones, every song is loaded with contrasts. Then I listened to Chris Green, which is produced by Rick Beato. Scales like you've never heard.
I did buy Rick's book. He offers discounts regularly, but I would consider this material an essential reference guide and teaching tool that will always be relevant in your guitar life. Thanks Rick for all the free knowledge you're passing on to all.

Okay,,,I didn't know Rick was this good (as I am a fingerstyle Jazz person, and less of a rock person)...wow! Hats off to Pete of course as he is a guitar legend too...what a great duo!!

You have completely tied together all the stuff I gave up on understanding when I was a kid trying to get his ADHD head around theory. Concise, just what you need to know, and I go off and work on it and it is gold. For FREE no less. Thanks for your channel, Rick.
@@WiserInTime I have my own issues with him in regards of how he sometimes presents some stuff but I like him in general. He is very knowledgeable but he at the same time expects you to understand him. He does not try make you understand because he expects you to be in command of your music theory.
I had a math professor like that. He knew perfectly what he was talking about when he was "teaching" the material. But only about 5 people from the entire class had a clue - and all five were extremely well equipped with very high IQ in terms of math. The rest of us suffered constant humiliation....but at the same time, you never forget this kind of people "for some reason"

Rick Beato is a music master. How do musicians not feel intimidated when recording in his studio? There's not much if anything that anyone is going to teach him. I've been playing guitar for 34 years and I feel like a 1st grader watching a professor give a lecture. Awesome.

Very cool video and a great subject! When it comes to infusing jazzy phrases into non jazzy music, I like to do both: playing diatonic pattern stuff, as well as the individual chord changes.

Awesome! Two of my heroes. Pete, love your student-mindedness. I have just tipped my toes into jazz and just the II V I progressions and modulations were a revelation. I *think* I am starting to hear it more and related turnarounds but with all the altered chords that dance around that structure I really struggle!

I've been playing for many years. This stuff is amazing but moves into the musicians musician only zone. My advice is to take one or two of the ideas that you can understand and utilise them in your own playing to add flavour to your own sound. Otherwise you become overwhelmed quickly and lose heart. I'm not knocking anything just trying to bring it back to earth for the human guys. I include myself. Good luck

LOL you look just a little less lost than I do when he starts discussing music. I have always played by ear, when Rick speaks it sounds like a foreign language to me and it messes with my head lmao. Man, he knows his stuff so well it blows my mind.
Good starting point that help me was to getting to know your triads all over the neck, in three note per string form, arpeggio forms etc- it can really help rock players dip their toes into Jazz for the first time.
