@14:30 discussing the end of Mirror's Truth - I feel like this reveal/twist does something that the best reveal/twists do: instead of making you go OH WOW, IT'S SO DIFFERENT you say OF COURSE - IT HAD TO BE. I love the book's ending, and consider this a major reason why - it was all there all along. This takes away the conceit of 'the twist' because the reader has the chance to hop onboard throughout, rather than the writer going "ha-ha! Ta-da!" and springing it on them.
I think that's the perfect reaction that you want to get with a twist - surprising, yet inevitable
My favourite twist/reveal is the end of Guy Gavriel Kay's The Lions of Al-Rassan.
I've wanted to read his stuff for a while - is that his best book, in your opinion?
@@Jed_Herne I've read Fionavar, Lions of Al-Rassan, and Tigana. Fionavar made me cry, but overall I don't like portal fantasy and some other aspects of it. They were his first books. Lions was strong but then has an epic final ten pages kind of thing. Tigana breaks all 'rules' of writing and then thrives. I found some storylines... weird... and others amazing and tightly woven. So... I'm not sure. Tigana might be the stronger. I forget Lions too much besides the ending.
This was Epic! 😊
Released 2 years ago? Lol looks like I'm late to the party XD Not my fault YT algorithm only just recommended this video/channel to me just now though.
Anyway, In regards to the topic at hand, for me, the best experience I've ever had with a twist in a story is the insane plot twist that occurs in the very first BioShock game. Anybody whose played that game knows exactly the moment I'm talking about lmao. That twist completely re-contextualizes everything that you have being working towards up to that point in the game and it's mind blowing.
The twists revealed in Naomi Novak"s Scholomance trilogy. They were great and shocking in the good way
One the best reveal/twists I have read recently is the The lost war by Justin Lee Anderson a spfbo 6 finalist . I wasn’t getting where the author was going with the storytelling but the reveal at the end made the book totally make sense and really improved the book.
Also Black stone heart is full of twists/reveal which kept me guessing about the storyline.
Lost War is defs on the reading list, as is BSH!
@@Jed_Herne give it the time to read it, it needs.
First one that came to mind - the ending of Anno Dracula by Kim Newman. To avoid being spoilery, you realize events throughout the book have been manipulated to set up a specific situation.
Ohhhh, I'm intrigued ...
"I was the monster all along" hahahaaa
Turned into a betting game: how long before Fletcher speaks again?
Ha! We pay him by the word, so have to keep the budget low
Been a long time, bur First Farseer book by Robin Hobb. Don't think there are any special reveals or twists in there.
That's one of Rob's fave series!
