- Hello everyone! This week I sang Speechless from Aladdin!
I was really surprised by how much I like this song! I’m usually pretty wary of how movies (or musicals for that matter) will incorporate new materials into the show. I find it to be very jaring and can take me out of the emersion if it’s super obvious. Speechless reminds me a lot of a traditional musical ballad with a pop kinda swing and I like that a lot.
It’s a very pretty melody, nice lyrics but given a pop twist. It could easily be turned into a fully orchestrated ballad and I’m hERE for it.
On a very real note, I rerecorded this a few times. It feels weird following Prince Ali with something I feel that isn’t my best. I’ve really grown since the original cover and it feels a little weird branding myself with it again so many years later. I am much more than all those high belts (shrieks) and I almost feel pressure to show that. It’s weird man, very weird. But regardless, I hope you all can sit back and enjoy.

Anna, my voice was a little similar to yours. I coule belt out those high soprano notes, but I also had a strong lower range. I was in choir for 13 years and was pushed only to use my alto range because "there are enough sopranos." So gradually over the course of 13 years, exercising my low range and not the high notes, I couldn't sing high anymore. When I realized that I left choir, despised my lower range and have desperately worked for the past few years to get my full range back. Truth is: no matter which way girls like us sing, someone wants us to use our other range. Your lower covers like this one help me embrace my alto and know that the "less feminine" voice can still ring beauty and grace when used properly. Please continue to show us every version of your beautiful voice and try not to feel pressured into losing this low range like I lost my high range. All of your "voices" are beautiful. Never mind anyone who says otherwise.

Piko Jade honestly so true preach sister! people try to make me sing high things that are so out of my range and it makes me feel so useless because no-one ever became a great singer by straining their voice to do “feminine songs”
Actually for me I have a low voice and my choir teacher wants me to have a higher voice.

In fifth grade, I was in chorus(It was either that or extra PE), and the teacher just divided us by height.
I was an alto for the entire year, and almost permanently ruined my voice because of how low I had to sing. The lowest I can sing is low D.
When i was in choir my teacher ruined my whole range he put me as an alto when i was a soprano, it was either my voice was to high or to low, now i can sing to my regular range but he had ruined my voice for 3 years

Okay but this song is so powerful and has such a strong message, especially in the context of Jasmine's life and the expectations of people around her suffocating her.
HOWEVER, the movie followed it up in a scene that was weaker than my will to live.

This is what I think about whenever I hear myself sing(musically inclined, no sort of training). There are so many musicians that probably sounded like wailing banshees when they first started out. The amount of work they put in makes every bit of strength and purity in their voice that much more worth it in the end.
