  • I Started a Joke is a song written and performed by the Bee Gees for their 1968 album Idea. As a single it reached number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100....As Memorial Day approaches.I related it to my experience as a combatant in the Vietnam War,...so much tragedy for us, those we fought and the civilians caught in the middle.
    I Started a Joke
I started a joke which started the whole world crying
But I didn't see that the joke was on me oh no
I started to cry which started the whole world laughing
Oh If I'd only seen that the joke was on me
I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
'Till I finally died which started the whole world living
Oh if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
'Till I finally died which started the whole world living
Oh if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
Oh no that the joke was on me

In the early 70's, while stationed in highland, middle part of Vietnam, my dad recorded his voices, played guitar, sung "I Started A Joke" and sent home his cassette tape, I was so scared that he never came back but my dad was so optimistic and didn't afraid of anything. This beautiful song stayed with me since.

Yes, sadly it evoked poignant memories from not just the Nam Era but other times the the decades that followed.

When I saw the photos and listened to the words I felt like crying. For all the young men who were made to go and fight in that awful war. A war which changed NOTHING except their minds, their personalities their hopes!
Funny lot really. Send them to fight in horrific conditions in foreign lands and then kick them when they're down.

The meaning of the song is: 10 years I was a resident of L.A. It was there I met someone in the music industry. After talking about many songs he told me the meaning of ‘I started a joke’ was about the crucifixion of Christ. If you keep that in mind while listening to the lyrics, it makes sense.

Being from the same generation as you, I can see all sides to it. Those who had to participate in that war and were against it (like my former husband), those who fought in the war and were offended by those who protested against it, and those who stayed home and protested against it, trying to end it...And you are right; Memorial Day is for all who died in wars. Peace to you, my friend...

Hi Glenn! Another beautiful song & powerful message you've put together my friend. I believe it does make a difference, the way you keep the message alive for others to see. We can't change the past but we can shape the future. Those aren't only words... they are truths. I'm thankful for all the good I have experienced in life... and understand that I would never have fully appreciated it without going through the bad as well.
I hope your days ahead are full of many great moments my friend : )

I had no idea it was memorial day, Glenn. It was horrific over there.
I have quite a few friends who went to Vietnam and other wars. One, an ex-SAS. We lived on a naval base when I was a small child (what a place to live, when I was terrified of choppers. Vivid memories of running screaming into the house. I thpught they were giant dragon-flies :-\ Then we moved into a navy home not too far away from the Base until I was 11) I saw the casualties; a friend of my father who lost both legs is one that really wrenched at my heart. You take care, y'hear? x

The lyrics are totally misplaced and disconnected with the Vietnam war. What idiot thinks it's relevant to Nam? The song and lyrics that work for Vietnam vets are "He ain't heavy. He's my Brother" by the Hollies. "We gotta get out of this place" by the Animals was another favorite of ours, only because of the Title (that FIT our waist deep in shit duty station) and solid rock beat. MACV 1964-1966. This song put the Vietnam War regardless of what it was written for or who with or who wrote it I was in combat in Vietnam this was a crime against humanity to listen to this song to put the Vietnam War into perfect perspective was very emotional to me because the exact truth is the only thing that's important this was the first war that was an obvious crime against humanity is a lesson to the world you don't take down all the memorials and Destroy things what you do is leave it up and have someone there to tell the truth and I'm willing to do it and I am doing it as we speak now

Children aged 18 might think to have a clue..
but the veil is thick and heavy
and when then the moments comes
where the mighty man can lift that veil
he wished dearly not being able.
