What is a synapse?

  • Oh synapse! Time to connect the dots…I mean neurons. Each neuron is separated from its neighbors, so how exactly does a message get passed from one neuron to the next? Through the synapse, of course! Take a closer look at the basic structure of the synapse, the two synapse types (electrical vs. chemical), and the different synapse receptors. Get the message? Good.

    Narrating pace is fast..... that of the electrical synapse. Since it's educational why not slow...that of the chemical synapse so that the message is WELL understood. Thnx for the clarity.

    im currently a first year graduate neuroscience student and these videos are great, especially for someone with no previous experience in the field till now! Will you be doing videos on different experimental techniques/ design such as voltage/current clamp?? Tnx!

      +Christiann Hill We love getting these comments! So happy to hear more people going into neuroscience. There are a lot of topics that we want to cover and we're always adding based on comments we get. Experiment design/procedure could be interesting.We will add these items to our list!

    What about neurotransmitters like Serotonin or Dopamine? How do they work? What effects do they have on the neuron? and how and why do they affect the big picture?
    For example, why does dopamine make you happy? Does it guide the neurons to trigger a set of "Happy" neurons which in turn tell the reward center of the brain to tell you to do more of whatever you're doing? Does this mean that there are hidden channels made by neurotransmitters?
    Similarly, what tells a neuron to release a certain neurotransmitter and not another?

    How presynaptic terminal and postsynaptic terminal are staying together, when there is actually gap between them?

    • @neurotransmissions
      @neurotransmissions  7 лет назад

      Great question! The answer is...astrocytes! We actually made a video about them if you wanna check it out. :)

    • @misseon1
      @misseon1 7 лет назад

      Thanks! How asstrocytes know to keep this exact distance? Its have to be very precise

    • @misseon1
      @misseon1 7 лет назад

      from wikipedia (Chemical synapse): A typical neuron gives rise to several thousand synapses... How astrocytes can control them all? Also neuro plasticity...synapses are changing. How it is controlled/ maintained?

    • @misseon1
      @misseon1 7 лет назад

      The pre- and postsynaptic membranes are actually connected to one another through "adhesion molecules." For example, there is a class of proteins called neuroligins. They are found in postsynaptic membranes and they bind to proteins on presynaptic membranes called neurexins. These types of connections hold the two neurons close together, but maintain a gap between them (i.e. the synaptic cleft). These protein interactions also help the synapse to form in the first place.

    Is it true that the human brain has 1000 trillion synapse? If so then that is as many synapse as there are stars... in 10,000 galaxies the size of the Milky Way. Also, you're missing a book from your library: The Dancing Wu Li Masters.

    So a synapse is not a characteristic; it’s a concept? It’s something that is happening as in a chain reaction?
