I mean... can you really ask for a better outcome? whenever someone tries to do weird shit in D&D it's always way more fun than just playing normally. me and my friends were in a catacomb of a city, we were up against 2 undead frost giants. rather than fighting them normally (because we'd get our asses kicked) I decide to rip a 10 foot by 10 foot wooden door off it's hinges to use as a shield/battering ram. I'm able to pin one giant to a wall and bash the other to the ground with the shear weight of this massive chunk of wood (I'm a 20 strength build) and we manage to take them down. because of this I form an emotional connection with the door and decide to name him Steve, me and Steve take on the dungeon together, even killing 2 sexy dryad girls (I allow their ghosts enter my mind and live in my body because I'm a gentleman. the other party members don't know this). at the end of the adventure I haul the door out of the catacombs and back to the Inn. unfortunately the Inn wouldn't allow me to bring it inside, it was the middle of the night and pouring with rain, I knew my beloved door would be stolen if I left it outside so there was only 1 thing to do. I carried Steve on my back to the mages guild, I begged and pleaded with them to teleport the door to my hometown. the DM told me to right a very compelling essay on why I should be allowed to do this in order to convince them (which I did) and then he told me to roll, anything less than a 20 and the door would be destroyed, nat fucking 20. a portal opens up, my father is on the other side, I hand him the door and tell him to watch after my new friend, then the portal closes. several months later in the campaign we're in the port city of Nardorf. one day while searching for jobs and such a package arrives for me, it's a shield and a letter from Steve. apparently Steve was once a powerful forest spirit who got cut down and turned into a door, because he was being kept underground away from sunlight and nature he was unable to recover his strength. by teleporting him to my mountain village (populately by roughly 80% werewolves) he was able to recover. he got a job at a pub as a sort of bouncer/sentient door and used his paycheck to by me the shield in memory of the day we first met. I actually cried irl when I read that letter and I'm kinda tearing up just typing this. I love Steve the door, protector of the forest, preventer of bar fights, friend of Sparrow.

I remember looking at crit role stats, and seeing an odd number, that Nott has a bunch of kills one episode more than anyone else, and it was really high compared to any of her other stats. It was the seagulls,
Funny thing about that Oblivion line is that in Skyrim with the larger Mudcrabs you had to be careful with in the really early levels or they WOULD kill you in two or three hits.
@@omegagilgamesh i kept getting one hit killed by mudcrabs in skyrim once, to me awhile to figure out why and i was getting pretty pissed off because i didn't know what was going on........ .....turns out my game had swithed itself to FUCKEN LEGENDARY MODE, for like half an hour i was running around not know WHY mudcrabs where killing me.
My 3.5 half elf sorcerer got bested by a rabbit once. We were heading towards a different town and had several days on the road. I decided to hunt with magic for shits and giggles. I found a rabbit warren and shot some fire magic off at the one visible rabbit. It rolled a natural 20 on its dex save so my DM ruled it took no damage instead of half and that it disappeared and no other rabbits were around.
@@TarsonTalon Hey! I'll have you know that we can be really hardy given the right circumstances. My Kobold survived getting shredded by a wyvern then falling from 200 feet in the air over poisionous rapids!

I think this video was my first exposure to Critical Role. I had no idea what was going on but I remember laughing my ass off over the seagull part Fast forward a few years and now I'm three campaigns deep, with a huge part of the lore of my own campaign setting based on a subclass from the Wildemount sourcebook Thanks for making this, it had a huge impact on me
I ignored 1st and 2nd campaign, but I did watch all 70 episodes of 3rd one. There is magic there to be explored. Especially people who know when and what to push forward that makes GM crack/turn red/facepalming..:)
I remember coming back to this moment, and thinking about how it reminded me of a campaign I was running where one of my players nearly got killed by a box he was trying to break.
I love everything about this, your style and matt in the clouds and especially nott's thinking process/diagram of how she will emerge victorious over the crab ("yay nott wunderbar!!). I've never seen a crit role animatic that actually included matt so that was a great touch!! all your cartoon characters are so cute

Best thing if he actually crit failed completely he gets killed by a tiny little crab. On his tombstone it'll say "Here lies Nott, they were bested by a Crab, nuff said"
I would be HORRIFIED to live in a D&D universe. The most absolutely absurd perils imaginable assail you if the RNG Gods fail you. Lvl. 20 warrior killed by tripping on a stone at walking speed? Absolutely. Master Wizard fighting a titmouse? No doubt! Rogue tieing his shoelaces? Critical fail enough times and yes, yes you can die. I can't stand it.

That's why you take levels if rogue and get reliable talent. Now you can tie your boot laces without fear of rolling a 1
