I made it through college 40 years ago driving cheap junkers that I kept on the road with such makeshift fixes. Did this exact repair once and it was still intact when I sold the car 2 years later.
This wont kill anyone. I have been doing this for years. The danger is if I had driven like this to town to get the proper parts. And I wont pay for a whole new exhaust when its not needed. All I need is a few inches of a larger diameter pipe and two proper clamps to do it right. I will do that on video too.
@@TheDoItYourselfWorld troy there are some things you don't need to do half assed this is one of them if the crappy exhaust system is rusting out it's time for a new one.... NOT a cheap temporary fix don't bet your families life on it.... your not alone any more... you have a wonderful wife and little daughter who are going to depend on you to do the right thing ...it can kill and does ...i know your going to cut that section out and replace it but from what little you showed and the age of your jeep and environment you live in it's time to replace all of it..there are some things you should NEVER compromise on and this time this is one of those..i had to revive a child on the side of a hwy because of something just like this so i know what im talking about..end of dad speech
Why on earth would you replace the cat, muffler and the rest of the exhaust when only one place is bad? How insane to spend a thousand dollars for a $10 fix. And for $10 I mean a proper fix. We live in a very wasteful society. There is nothing wrong with the cat and muffler on this vehicle.
@@TheDoItYourselfWorld if you pay thousands for an total exhaust system your a fool ....replace everything from the cat back......less then 100 dollars and your family doesn't die from carbon monoxide poisoning....your not trapped in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a roll of duck tape and some bailing wire do the right thing
the only problem with petrol engines is they produce condensation in the exhaust and they rot inside out diesels tend to rot from outside in due to the thick layer of soot so protect only way to make exhausts last is stainless but for that tends to be alot of money my friends old 4x4 landrover had started to rust out panels so having a chassy the body work does not have crumple zones so we got industrial stainless steel sheets and built body panels and pop riveted then in place then painted panels to match rest of body work
@@TheDoItYourselfWorld yeah i did notice that was not sure if it was undercoat pealing away or rotton panels look for old microwaves side of the road and such the silver ones are stainless some of them have stainless inside if you put ridges in the panels they are stronger so can be made with finner panels
Somewhere but its never used anyway. This is so easy to grab. And I find this easier to use. Those electric ones sometimes dont get a bite on a can. We live in a lazy semi-automated society these days. Its sad.
Great fix for the price I’d never think of that thanks for sharing and if u ever thought about replacing that little short piece of pipe they make a Universal Exhaust Flexible Repair Kit that’s flexible so u can bent it into the correct shape and it cuts vary easy with a saw they come with the clamps there about 10-15 at auto part stores it’s probably easier than welding in a section of pipe , and they make high temperature paint u could probably wire brush off the exhaust and spray it on it comes in a spray paint can it would make the exhaust system last a little while longer and help prevent rust , great videos god bless.
They make an exhaust putty that could be used to seal that can. At one time I had an exhaust paste with a heat resistant tape to put over it like drywall tape then I put the paste over it and let it dry. It seemed to work until I could save the money to have the exhaust fixed. I try to keep that kind of thing on hand just in case.
What no baling wire or brazing rod with a cutting torch aka hot wrench to fill in the hole. Did you use a Campbells or Progresso can for your patch. Michigan farmer's quick fix with the baling wire. Makes for a quick disconnect of muffler to make the olde engine sound a little tougher. 289 into a 351 Windsor. Good enough to get you to Minekie to get a new exhaust train installed and holes patched in floor boards. Beats a ticket for loud exhaust in town. Michigan cancer strikes again.
My grandpa showed me this fix many years ago. Good explanation and well done! 👍
Excellent, no fluff, to the point! Thanks 🙏.

if U cut the pipe all the way through, U can get a piece of pipe 1 size bigger with 2 pipe clamps about 6-8 inches long and make a new fit!!!!
Yes, I may go that route and cut out the rot and put in a new piece to join them back together.
That is a wonderful idea! Where would you find that kind of pipe?
Any auto parts store has pieces of exhaust pipe for repairs. Various sizes and diameters to get the job done.

ah we been doing this for years to in the uk we also use gumgum to help make a good seal lasts for about 6 month
What size clamps did you use
I appreciate videos like this. Thanks, Troy.
Happy to help :)
Good vid! Simple and straight forward.
Thank you
Great works fella! 👍👍
Funny I just patched a hole in the pipe on my "work beater" just like this...I've done it in the past and it works great to get you by for a bit...lol
Been doing this for years. lol
Awesome Troy! 👍👍💯💯

Great video😀👍👍👍
troy do your family right .....new exhaust is called for ..don't kill your family being cheap

Yes, that is true. Its a temporary fix. I wish I could work with and afford stainless. Our Jeep needs some panels underneath replaced this summer.

Cool. Thanks for the tip
@@TheDoItYourselfWorld no problem nearly forgot dishwashers also
Even though the exhaust is still leaking. Jb weld would be a nice sealer to stop the gassed from leaking into the cabin of the vehicle
No electric can opener? That's why I'm glad I'm on grid :)

@@TheDoItYourselfWorld agree.
Electrics were a pain and the cats always lost their minds when they heard it!
A good manual can opener is great. Faster and easier than the stupid electric one

How long did the muffler fix last?
