Que interpretación impecable y nítida. Linda técnica de arco. Hace mucho tiempo deje de tocar la Viola y me inspiras a volver a retomar la. Gracias gracias
Performances of both Suites are extraordinarily good. I thought I played them reasonably well, and then you showed me how they should be played! You have a gorgeous bow arm that allows you to articulate clearly at ferocious tempos. World class playing and musicianship!
Hi David Rose, I was wondering how you go about performing Bach? Would you say most of your ideas are carefully planned out and rehearsed, or do you sometimes go off of feeling in the moment? My Bach mostly feels off the whim and I would love to hear what your performance mindset is like while playing Bach! Jack
Hi Jack, I would say that how they end up sounding in concert is about 95% prepared. It's hard to talk about it terms of numbers. The faster movements are such that there is more danger in being spontaneous....and those are more determined. The slower mvts are perhaps more flexible. I would say that most ideas are carefully planned and prepared....yes, that is very safe to say.....and within that planning, a small amount of room for freedom. It's a paradox, eh? A freedom which seems improvised, but is actually mostly planned out. The longer I play these things, the more freedom I feel to change plans in concert, but that process is really slow. I try not to think as I play (it's a deadly thing to do), but do think about certain motions and how to approach the viola before playing, and on final notes and whatnot. The rest is kind of programmed in I suppose. Before playing the cycle of all six, I play them through twice per day for 2 weeks - and I DO NOT STOP for anything. I'll fix stuff that happened between the run throughs. In preparing that way, I can slip into a trance when performing - and the time flies by. Take care, and enjoy the journey!! :)
Hi there, Yes I know that Alan and Sarah Baumforth do make violins. They are super people and make wonderful violas. I believe their son is now a maker also.
The maker of this viola is Alan Baumforth, and it was made in 1996. He's still making, along with his wife Sarah, and their son is making instruments now also.
Another performer of the multitude who consider Bach's preludes not being expressive enough, and requiring their own exaggerations to make them sound more beautiful. It is true that the trend started with Casals, but contemporary musicians crossed all boundaries. Why don't people listen to Rotropovich' renditions?
We're both Rostropovich fans. Have you heard this? ruclips.net/video/fTE7VAr1C2g/видео.html . Easily one of the greatest things on RUclips. He talks about each suite before recording them. As he speaks about the G pedal section in the C major prelude, I wish that I had had a theory teacher like him. I'm sorry my renditions weren't to your liking. Differing opinions on interpretation are inevitable, understandable....and necessary. Take care, David.
It would be so boring if we all played them the same. Why even bother playing them in the first place if we intend to all play the same, as we imagine or assume Bach would want us to?
Prestation absolume,nt exemplaire ; il faudrait envisager à nous prodiguer les trois autres suites .
Such beautiful playing! Thank you! I find the 4th Prelude so difficult to memorize and you did it so masterfully!
Beautifully performed!
Magnificent excecution
I take inspiration from your playing when i play bach, it's nearly perfect.
Que interpretación impecable y nítida.
Linda técnica de arco.
Hace mucho tiempo deje de tocar la Viola y me inspiras a volver a retomar la.
Gracias gracias
I very much appreciate your kind comment. Start playing again! Even for fun...it's so wonderful, isn't it?

What a performance. Bravo! I love Bach's Cello suites and this rendition on the viola is astounding. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Arturo. I'm so glad you liked it!

Any violins from this luthier?

Great sounding viola. Who's the maker?
