  • Join clinical herbalist, field botanist, and nutrition educator, Shana Lipner Grover, as she brings us to Mount Pisgah Arboretum to discuss one of her favorite plants in the Berberidaceae family: Oregon grape. Shana loves Oregon grape for its bitter tannins and its affinity for liver and gut health. This wonderful western North American plant ally can be harvested sustainably and can be easily identified by its spiny leaves, blue berries, and golden flowers.
    🤓 Shana is a clinical herbalist, health and nutrition educator, and field botanist. She was a student of award-winning herbalist Michael Moore and also one of Mountain Rose Herbs' favorite herbalists, Howie Brounstein. Today, she is the director and primary educator of Sage Country Herbs School of Botanical Studies in San Diego, CA.

She is also lovely to talk to and is super responsive on her social media channels! You can find those links in the video description. Can i make a root tincture and just use a few drops to pbtain the bitters?

    • @mountainroseherbs
      @mountainroseherbs  9 месяцев назад

      Hi there! Oregon grape root tincture has a bitter taste and can be taken on the tongue or in warm, still, or sparkling water. You can also add it to a homemade bitters blends for a healthful delight. If you plan on taking it alone, that's great. Oregon grape root extract also pairs well with bitter and aromatic botanicals such as gentian root extract, burdock root extract, or chamomile extract. As always, it's best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for your specific health needs before starting a new herbal remedy.

    So I think I need to ask this question
    I don't have a thyroid and on synthroid. Would this not be good to make and take?
    Now I understand why people eat bitter melon now.

    When you kinda skimmed over thyroid issue I was hoping you would go a little deeper about it.

      Hi there Parsi! Unfortunately at Mountain Rose, we can't comment on medical issues. I would suggest reaching out to Shana directly (linked in the video description--she is very responsive on social media) or finding another qualified herbalist, naturopath, or doctor to ask if there would be any complications. I hope you find the answer you are looking for! - Gracie

    I purchased a small amount of Oregon Grape dried root shavings, but I can't figure out what to do with it. I tried to create a powder by grinding it with a spice grinder but it is too hard. Not sure if I can make a tea with this. The description on the product webpage says "intended for further proccessing."

    So how does this work if you don't have a gallbladder?

    • @sagecountryherbs7338
      @sagecountryherbs7338 2 года назад +1

      Those who've had their gallbladders removed still make bile in the liver, but have no ability to concentrate it without a gallbladder. Oregon Grape is a liver stimulant to bile production, so it's helpful to those without gallbladders by increasing the amount of bile produced.
