    Best tip I ever heard: set your hair dry. After it's rolled up take a towel and wet it with hot, hot water.
    Wring it out almost dry then drape it over your head, making sure all the rollers are covered, and let it "steam" your hair. Hair should feel barely barely barely damp when done.
    Leave rolled up until ready for a brush out. It keeps the curls from turning into a clown/fright wig. Speeds up brush outs.
    Love your channel

    Your advice re: using foam rollers is spot on. My friends and I developed exactly the same techniques you use in the 60s and 70s. The only issue we had was dealing with the crease caused by the roller rods. I vaguely remember one of my friends laying a square of TP she had folded a couple of times across the roller before closing the roller rod. It looked wierd, but for her it did the trick. I think it would also depend on how tight you rolled your hair, as well as the texture and thickness of your hair. Good video!

      Thank you! Definitely have to be careful of those roller clip bits, the creases drive me mad!

      Perm end papers work wonders for this

    You're the only person I've found that has said your hair takes a set really easily. Which is an issue I have. I've tried using other people's suggestions and ended up looking like I'd stick my tongue in an electric socket. Thank you for your tips and sharing your experiences.

      Thank you Rosella! I feel lucky that my hair has just enough texture naturally that it easily takes and holds curl, it's certainly less common though I suppose!

    I just discovered your channel and I can't thank you enough for making videos because they really do help a lot. I'm still trying to figure out what I can do with my hair since I have Bettie bangs and I've never been to a salon so I'm trying to learn this all myself 😂

      Thank you so much Arie! I think Bettie bangs are super cute! I'm totally self taught when it comes to vintage hair, it's a constant learning process for sure :)

    It takes a long time to brush out but I find that doing my hair very tight is best if I want to keep my hairstyle for 3-4 days, the first day they’re a little Queen of England looking, but the following days they relax a bit and it’s gorgeous. My hair is very fine and also bleached so that makes it easier for me to keep a curl! With product, mousse and water based salt pomade are my favourites, other things I’ve tried either make my hair slimy or too soft or gross and I don’t want to use products that mean I have to wash my hair more often because it’s pink and that washes out real quick.

    Very helpful. Thank you. My hair is like yours and I find that a damp set on foam rollers overnight works best.

    I've learned the hard way that my hair needs a dry set like yours rather than a wet set. Works so much better and holds the curl fine. All I use is a little flexible hold hair spray and I'm good to go! Good tip about the bobby pins, I'll look for those!

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  7 лет назад

      It was an important lesson for me too, with a true wet set my hair becomes a monster that cannot be tamed!

    i thought foam rollers were a modern thing (with plastic ones coming in the late 50s, velcro a bit after) & it was metal rollers, curling rods/rags & of course pin curls for the most part? xx

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  7 лет назад +5

      Probably! I can't seem to find anything about when they were invented online. Thank goodness for modern innovation, sleeping on metal curlers sounds awful. I have never cared if the way I got my style was accurate, only that it looked nice in the end :)

    sigh...I have very long, thin, unruly undecided hair, wavy frizzy, not straight curly in it's own way, that will not keep any curl I want...plus no patience! but I will at some point decide to do something different with it apart from my granny buns...euhm chignons and last minute updos...I looked those bobby pins up but here in Italy amazon would send them at min 50 euros yikes! thanks for sharing

      Le trovi tranquillamente in negozi specializzati in prodotti per capelli o che vendono prodotti per parrucchieri, e costano veramente poco, tipo 20 cent l'una o cose simili :)

    So hear me out here, there is a way if you wanna do vintage hair and your hair is long. So my hair is waist length. What I do is I use 7/8th rollers and insted of rolling from the ends of my hair to the root, I roll my hair from root to tip so that that top of my head keeps alot of curlyness. Then when I do my brush out I pin my hair into a faux Bob all at the nape of my neck. There is other stuff I do to maintain it but that would be a very long comment

    Where was this video a year ago when I started my vintage hair journey 😭😭😭
    But really, this is super - I also have thick hair like yours, but a mix of textures, and I've found that pin curls work better because rollers just make it frizz out. It's funny that all of the recommended tools I've seen are collected here and are the ones I use (the Sally pins I discovered on my own and are a game-changer, Grip-Tuth, etc.). I've had some success with the Lottabody Coconut and Shea Oil, but like you said, not sure if cruelty free.

    In my thumbnail pic my hairstylist curled my hair with a flat iron and sprayed it down with like 10 layers of extreme hold hairspray bc it was a stormy day, he knew I was coming but did not have the right size hair net and the style had to last through a wedding reception. (I wanted Dita Von Teese's signature hairstyle) My hair is longer than yours but not super thick anymore and I have a modified horseshoe cut so I may be able to pin curl or just use my 1in flat iron. I really do want a denman style brush, duckbill clips, and wave clips, a hair net, and those traditional open clips. I used to have bobby pins from Sally but lost them and have found that goody brand is decent so I'm currently using those but I would never buy dollar store bobby pins, they are so terrible. I'm glad I found your channel. 💚

      Thanks Mariel! If I ever grow my hair out again I will totally do a Dita tutorial, but I am pretty devoted to my bob haircut currently ;)

    What other brushes do you recommend for brushing out curls (to have a rita hayworth or veronica lake style with longer hair)?

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 лет назад +2

      I have only used the denman styling brush for vintage brushouts myself. I think the difference in style of a finished set (tighter curls versus looser waves) has more to do with how you curl the hair as opposed the what brush is used really. Different sizes of foam rollers, or barrels of curling irons, or hot rollers, or pin curls are going to give really different results. I know Lucille's Locks (fabulous hair stylist) on Instagram has just released a video on her brushout for longer vintage hair that I am excited to watch soon, so you may want to check that out too gumroad.com/l/qPmaJ

    I have lots of hair, thick hair, with a light wave that holds absolutely nothing for more than an hour or two without extreme measures. So I think I'll have to skip the rollers and do other things with mine.

      @TheClosetHistorian  6 лет назад +4

      A wet set, like pin curls or even using perm rods as rollers, of some kind with a setting lotion would probably be the best option for seriously stubborn hair that just won't hold curl, but I am not used to working with such a hair texture myself!

      Hmm I think mine are from Sally's too, though I do have some orange ones that I think I got at Target several years ago too. Sadly I'm not sure who else sells/makes them these days!

      I just went on a little search and my favorite of my rollers (are orange and white) are from a Goody roller set, so perhaps look out for Goody brand rollers? Good luck!

    Thank you so much for this video! Newbie here and I have been loving your videos. Also, unfortunately LottaBody is not cruelty free. I emailed the company and they sell in China and "test where required by law" which is so unfortunate. Still on the hunt for a cruelty free dupe

      Thank you Jessica! Bummer that LottaBody isn't cruelty free, I have never needed to repurchase since I dilute it soooo much whenever I even do use it, but now I definitely won't repurchase!

      A natural product is. Take a tablespoon flax seeds and 1 cup water. Boil for 15 min. Strain with a fine mesh colander into a mason jar. This will look like hair gel. Cool and use as a setting " lotion".

    Check out the RUclips clip below, I think it's the one I wanted, it's from GlamourDaze and a very cool color clip of Fabulous 20"s fashion, The Hats! I'm a sucker for the 20's and a cloche. Hope u see it, though you probably already know about this channel anyway. The content can be addicting for vintage old souls.
