Hi Jess, I agree with your list of pros for doing this work! For me being a sociable people friendly person is one of the primary requirements coupled with that of good listener, handling the world of self employment, having some medical knowledge or willingness to do a little search, like finding solutions to foot problems and knowing when to refer on etc. The cons are as you've said. It takes a while to build up ones clientele to the point where one can earn a reasonably good wage. One particular con for me is not having many colleagues to share the day to day foot health issues with. Obviously, if one has kept in touch with ex students you've studied with that's one way to share ideas and information. My background in social work has helped me enormously in understanding some of the needs of my clients. It is an incredibly rewarding work!
100% agree. Are you part of any of the foot health groups on Facebook? Very helpful 👌 so many friendly PODs and FHPs on there. Kind of takes the edge off working by yourself and you'll often meet them if they attend various conferences and build friendships that way x x
Hi Faye, I was reading your comment thinking that I completely agree, and then I read you are from a Social Work background - so am I!. How long have you been an FHP? I qualified in November and I'm so pleased that I've made the change. Being an FHP is so rewarding, I love it. Lynne x
@@lynneedgecombe2346 Hi Lynne, I qualified in 2011 and transitioned from full time SW to full time FHP. It takes a while to build enough clients to be able to leave a well paying career behind but it was worth it.!
Thank you for this Jess. Very informative. Personally, I think it is about the person and their personality rather than the job. So some people will love to be a FHP, others not and that's okay! You just need to find your niche.
My only issue is that I'm squeamish.. I say only.. Kind of major lol. I started the course for the reasons you mentioned.. And relieving pain instantly and bringing a better standard of life to people. I'm nearly ready to do my practical.. I just hope I grow a pair and can focus on the outcome. Thanks for these videos 💜🙏🏽

Hi Emma, congrats and best of luck. it can get a little chilly, just pop a cardi on or put a long sleeve shirt under your tunic or scrubs and you should be fine :) x x
Thanks for the advice. One thing I was wondering is how you built a client list? Do you put out flyers and business cards? Do you advertise in local newsletters? Thanks 😊
Did you start your business bank account etc and order stuff before going to your training at smae? Or did you wait till the course was done before starting prep for the business?
I actually waited until I finished my training. I didn't start straight away after qualifying so i had time. Also i wasnt sure what to buy at the time and from where. There wasn't channels like mine when I was on training or enough information out there until i actually went onto my training and spoke with the trainers there. But I did set up all my social media platforms ready. X x
Hi Jess, these videos are invaluable, I’m trying to decide whether to train or not. I think the main thing that worries me is how to register with HMRC, and do a tax return. Do you do it yourself or do you have an accountant? Is it as scary as it sounds? Sam x
Awww Samantha 😊 thank you. So I've done both, done tax return myself and had an accountant. I'm planning a few videos on this soon. But no, it's not scary, it's pretty straight forward. As long as you keep accountnof your incoming and outgoings, keep your invoices/receipts and have a god system in place you'll be fine. Obviously having an accountant will cost more, BUT if like me, time isn't on your side or you want to make sure everything is done correctly and also gain benefits then an accountant is the way to go, they are then responsible for any mistakes made etc. I'll definitely do a video on this, but I need to plan and execute it well. X x
wooow this is scary because i do have a natural tendency to work for myself but actually making that move is intimidating bit i thnk this maybe a way of making that slow transition
Just typed in foot health practitioner and found you straight away. So nice too see someone who looks like me doing this. Thanks for your advice x
Thank you so much, and i'm glad i popped up straight away too !!! x x
Great vid . I’m considering switching from nursing so I went looking for info 😊thank you
