  • Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to Bret Easton Ellis (best-selling author, screenwriter, and podcast host) about the decline of the mainstream media, cancel culture and why he is anti-anti-Trump. Bret is the author of "American Psycho," "Less Than Zero," and his latest hit, "White", and he has been described as the dark laureate of Generation X. Bret shares the inside story of how American Psycho was almost cancelled and a precursor to the cancel culture that we see today. Bret also reveals how the media’s coverage of Trump was a political awakening for him and why he considers himself anti-anti-Trump. He shares how he thinks news institutions like the New York Times and CNN have lost their way. He also reveals the moment that he realized that the media were getting the Trump narrative wrong.

I agree. Not a well thought out line. Lost his credibility with me. I’m white. Youngest of seven. My dad worked his ass off in construction to feed us. No privilege there. I was never interested in politics just because. More interested in making a career path for myself. But, I became aware after seeing what the media was reporting on Trump and how I interpreted Trumps speeches. Complete conflict there. I suppose my point is that this whole Trump phenomenon has made us all acutely aware of our individual political stance. And it has nothing to do with being white or any other poc.

As a career professional audio engineer, I have edited hundreds of interviews. I am so good at it, I can edit a breath to the middle of a sentence and make it sound unedited. My "moment" was when I saw Trump's "these people are rapists, murderers and drug dealers" comment lifted from the middle of a sentence and presented by the MSM as what Trump had said at a campaign rally, claiming that Trump had said ALL MEXICANS are ... Taken out of context and presented to the viewers, an open, overt, unapologetic lie, I was jolted to the awareness of, "What is going on here?"

My dad told me in 1988 that he found it strange that every news station, every day, had the same cat being saved by the fire department, or same stories, all day, no matter the channel. He said there are lots of other news never mentioned. I said yes, but I don't watch TV, so I didn't mind the terrible programming selection. WOW. Choice is edited for consumption. I started caring when the brainwashing activated the zombies to attack rule of law, law enforcement, our constitutional rights, etc, when Bush Jr was in office. Trump is the first conservative President since Reagan. Everyday is a slide towards social programming. Laws and law enforcement are just words on paper if someone can force me to wear a mask or not eat, or keep me home and not work, even though current law grants me freedom of speech, to gather...

The key part that makes this great is nobody has to or needs to fully agree with people to support them. There was this weird shift that happened that somehow if you don’t agree 100% you can’t agree at all or if you don’t your the enemy or racist or every insult in the book one could throw at someone (typically republican or conservative in the receiving end). Liberals who like trump don’t have to become republicans. You can be a Liberal that’s just not a democrat anymore. The shift “Democrats” made further left expanded the Right to consist of some Liberals, libertarians conservatives republicans etc. the democrats made their party shrink by going far left (thinking everyone under the democrat umbrella would follow because the media had demonized trump enough for people to believe the lies) while inadvertently many people saw what was happening. Now there’s a big orange umbrella that trump is working hard to make everyone’s America great again. ;).

It seems there is smaller voice on the left who are very loud screamers who have MSM on their side, putting their message out with bull horns. The right appear to be controlled in their viewports, therefore we don’t hear them as much. I’ve been conservative for 40 years and wouldn’t think of screaming at the left, or responding with ugly rhetoric, written or verbal. To me, the left do not have the capacity to reason or debate - they are just angry. Also look at the Frankfurt School of Socialism. Almost every one of their listing of necessary edicts to establish a communist/socialist regime has been accomplished in this country. It is just as Norman Thomas stated years ago, "that the American people will never knowingly accept socialism, but under the name of liberalism, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation---without knowing how it happened." We are there, thanks to not just Obama, but the Bushes and Clinton. Each has put their piece in the puzzle. The Patriot Act by George Bush is not for patriots, but against them, and the smug narcissist Obama tore this country apart with his racially charged agenda, and socialist Healthcare. The hour is late my countrymen.

Then went through the 60’s in the Haight Ashbury of San Francisco and did the whole trip. Was a Rajneesh neo-sannyasin, then a new age “space cadet,” and became a painter. Always, always a counter-culture liberal. Voted for, and believed in, Bernie Sanders the first time around in the Democratic primaries. I totally bought into the media narrative about Trump. Because I practice a discipline that says to be happy, look for what you prefer in any situation, I started looking for things I could appreciate about the new President. I watched him at work in his cabinet meetings & listened to full speeches....and started listening to people I resonated with on alternative media. It really didn’t take long for me to do a complete about-face. With these daily briefings, I think many are being woken up to who this man really is, rather than who the media & the Dems make him out to be. He’s kept every election promise, yet my friends who used to complain that no one was talking about peace, will Not give him credit for that accomplishment. He can’t do anything they will give him credit for, no matter how much it may benefit those they claim to support. He’s fallible, of course, and I don’t agree on all issues, but what his administration has accomplished in his 3 plus years as President is phenomenal.

      I am much more nuanced.
To the negative, Trump is a narcissist, a braggart....that really stretches the truth...and frequent liar about relatively unimportant things, an adulterer, and a man of general low character (some of his business dealings were very bad). His tweets can be really, really tacky (the recent one where he brags about his ratings....as we are in this pandemic... is awful).
To the positive, Trump does want good things for the country. He fights for America. He sees the danger of China. He sees that previous politicians did not get things done. He has called out to black Americans (and God do I hate the hyphenation of fellow citizens) to say “What do you have to lose?” He, through his son in law, did a great job passing the First Step Act (and if you want to be moved to joy, watch that video on RUclips). He calls out media for false/incomplete/un-nuanced reporting.
As president, his results are mixed.... like most presidents. He’s put in place two justices that I like...as well as a number of excellent judges on the lower courts. Far and away, this is his legacy and it is a great one. He has made the country face China..and the UN. However, to be effective - like it or not - he needs allies and he’s done little but alienate people on the world stage. China can play a very long game. Trump has another 4 years. We don’t have Europe, Canada, Japan, Mexico, etc. on board for the fight, so it’s unlikely the fight will mean much over that long game. That is a real worry, to me and I think this is a huge failure. While I believe the Democrats are wrong about the wall, they have that right to do what they’ve done. It’s their version of Merrick Garland. That is why I am frustrated that Trump blew off the Democrats willingness to give $25 billion for the wall in exchange for DACA. I respect and agree with those that say giving citizenship to those whose parents broke our immigration law is wrong.... but this is politics. We are being purists about a political environment that is dirty. Trump should have made that deal. Instead, he caved to those that refused to acknowledge this is a dirty game.
I am a conservative because I believe that humans are imperfect. Trump, more than anyone in my lifetime, illustrates it.

That was so weird to me too. I've always leaned conservative and Republican. My parents dreaded Obama (they hated his record and policies) when he became the Democrat candidate. When he won the election they weren't happy, but had an attitude of grit and bear it for the next 4 years. He was legally elected and throwing a tantrum won't change that. My attitude is that you don't have to like the President, but they were chosen by the people. Respect that. Even our worst presidents haven't destroyed this country. Let's see what happens with this one. I'll be at the polls again in 4 years anyway. Then I move on with my life.

For 20 years I was an independent who thought the two party system we have is bad for the country and voted third party or independent 99% of the time, including 2016 general election.
The moment I realized one of the two parties had become enemy of the freedom, and therefore enemy of the state, happened during the Obama's second term when we had that national "debate" over transgender bathroom use.
My opinion, right or wrong, was very simple. What bathroom one should use is determined by what genitalia they had. Once you had your gender realignment procedure you can use the bathroom of your chosen gender. I was, of course, open to debate and was willing to have an open mind and if given a scientific proof my opinion was wrong (e.g. conclusive medical research showing individuals undergoing hormone therapy can no longer have the sexual drive of their birth gender) I was willing to change my mind.
The "wow" moment was when I realized that the side pushing the "everyone should use the bathroom of the gender they identify with" narrative, not only was not open to real debate but was just toxic and immediately launched personal attacks on anyone not in full agreement with their "official" opinion, shutting them down, calling for them to be "canceled", "de-platformed" and so on.
That was a total shock to me because their stance was so totalitarian, so against everything I strongly believed in (freedom of speech, freedom of thought, open-minded debate, ability to agree to disagree and so on) that I was for the first time scared about the direction the country was going in. The whole episode had such a truly chilling effect on me that I started to look at the left as the enemy and started to have more and more understanding for the 2A crowd. If you are confronted with totalitarianism, the only chance you have of keeping your freedom and not being jailed for your opinions is if you and most of the other freedom loving citizens are armed and ready to defend that freedom. I began to realize the only true protection of the constitution and the Bill of Rights is the second amendment.
I am still an independent but over the last 5 or 6 years since that moment the left kept getting more and more insane, policing our every word, every thought, becoming a horrible thought police akin to East German Stasi. They are now openly talking about and promising socialism in this country, something completely unimaginable just 10 years ago. Something so unacceptable to me and at odds with the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution that it is now more clear than ever that they are the enemy within that must be stopped. As a result, this November for the first time ever I will be voting straight Republican and have no remorse about that what so ever.
I still feel if we had more pluralism in this country we would not be as sharply divided as we are now but the time to vote 3rd party or independent and essentially waste your vote is gone, because if they win this country is going down the toilet. Everything founding fathers fought and died for will be gone, our Bill of Rights will be gone, our individual freedoms will be gone. Our tax rate will go to 50% (as we can see from the example of "progressive" Europe) to pay for all the "free" stuff they are promising to their voters and we'll all just stop going to work, inventing, starting businesses and line up for their "free" stuff until there is no one left to pay for all the "free" stuff and this country is completely ruined.

I thought, oh, they'll wise up and let it go or insist they are right and become irrelevant." I had too much faith in people getting their fill and hitting them over the heads with reality. But it kept getting worse. Now it seems the trend finally got bad enough for the more moderate, usually quiet majority to realize the responsibility to resist it. When it affects everyone in one way or another, we can't just take care of our own and let the talking heads work it out.

I am still shocked (after 2 1/2 months of finding the truth) at how in the world that the fake news can get away with this. This may very well be the silver lining of this lockdown. But casually linking it to race is bullshit. If it's a logical error to assume that everyone has the same starting point in life, then it's also an error to assume that white people are somehow privileged because they're all born into some advanced starting point in life.

I realized news/media were bias when I was reading my local paper and the front page headline was Obama pulling 10,000 troops from the Middle East and the writer praises him for it which took the entire front page and then when I continued reading the newspaper I came to page 6 and there was one small 4-sentence paragraph story on the bottom of the page saying Obama sent 27,000 troops to the Middle East, no reason why, just stating how many troops from which base. I was extremely confused but after I thought about it then it hit me (hit me hard) on what this newspaper was doing. I reread the front page and realized how much of it was not facts, it was the writer’s opinion, the writer’s translation/interpretation of news, of facts. Reading the front page story the second time felt as though I was reading it differently, as if I was finally awake and reading it clearly, it was a strange feeling.

My moment was the day after the 2016 election. I woke to Trump winning, the market was sharply up, and I looked at my wife and said “I think we dodged a bullet”.

My eureka moment was in 1964, when Goldwater ran against Johnson. That is when the media lost sense of neutrality!
Giodwater was continually being characterized as an extremist. He was in fact transparent in saying what he believed.
During his acceptance speech at the RNC, Goldwater said something like: "I stand for this, and this, and this, and this, and whatever else ... if this is extremism, then I am an extremist".
The newspapers of the day, in the biggest capital letters I have seen in newspapers, said: "Goldwater admits he is an extremist".
I saw at that point, that the media was in the business of foisting their opinions on their audience. It is only rarely since then that we have been treated to neutral reporting.

I'm a recovering liberal (haven't voted Democrat since 2004). I consider myself a Constitutionalist, left leaning on social issues, right leaning on fiscal issues, strong advocate for small government, term limits and separation of church and state.
I boarded the Trump train the day he announced his candidacy and have been a strong, undeterred, unapologetic supporter ever since. No, I don't blindly worship him as the second coming of Jesus. In fact, there are a few things he's said and done that I oppose. He can be bombastic, which doesn't bother me in the slightest, but I was worried that other people would be bothered by it and it would hurt his re-election chances. In spite of all that, I think he is one of the best presidents the US has had and I know he is the best president in my lifetime (I was born in the Nixon era). He has set the bar very high by actually keeping his campaign promises and genuinely caring about this country and her citizens. He is essentially showing the politicians how to do their jobs.

It is so weird that people like bret use to be defended by the left but because they do not tow the party line now the left wants their head. Just shows how tribal politics has become

Mr. Ellis could have been describing my own political awakening. My experience was exactly the same but with a different headline on the NYT. I was never interested in journalism or politics until I began to notice how shady it all is. Now I follow both just so I can shout from the roof tops what I have learned. It is so important for people to hear things like this so that perhaps they will see the truth as well. Thanks, Dave and Bret, for doing this work.

Dave Rubin is a national treasure. In my opinion, he defines what it means to be a free thinker. He is rational, kind, and euridite without being pretentious. As a bonus, he is a superb interviewer. Some months ago, I read criticism of Dave by TYT, deriding him for letting an interviewee speak unchallenged. I watched that interview and it was fantastic. Dave gave the interviewee the rope to hang himself, all with aplomb and grace. Again, Dave Rubin is one of the best interviewers now in the public sphere, in the same realm as Stern. Another thing: I remember the criticism of American Psycho in 1989. I didn't pay much attention at the time. Now that I have heard Ellis talk, I am intrigued by this novel, and I am going to give it a second look. Finally, I really don't give a bleeding flip what politics Rubin has, or for that matter Stern or Ellis or anybody else. I just like free thinkers and I like to listen to them talk. In that respect, Rubin is simply sublime.
