Rare DNFs are understandable but when an athlete does it too often, then it is not very inspiring. After all, you have this channel to inspire others, no? That's why I watch these channels. I've heard that once you make the decision to DNF when technically you could have finished, then the other DNFs come easier. I'm just an age grouper fighting to qualify for Worlds, I am not Elite nor in the top 10 either but in 2021 I was having a horrible run because of how hot it was, I was suffering and I said to myself, "screw this, I am just not going to finish this one" but kept going anyway. Well, everyone was suffering and I finished and ended up getting a spot for Worlds through the roll down. Still not top 10 but I got a ticket to Worlds at a race I almost quit. Best decision to not give up.
he was listening to his body, now that's a sign of a fantastic athlete. He never made this youtube video to inspire us, but just bring those who are curious along for the ride.
keep your head up Harry... it's not how many times you fall down, it's how many times you pick yourself up and carry on. lots of ups and downs in this sport, keeping a positive mindset is key... stay true to yourself and the process and good results will follow.
It seems like a few people have been disappointed in the race performances this past weekend! I wonder if training has gone so well ... maybe too well, and fatigue catches up unexpectedly. And the travelling to races adds a degree of stress as well. Good luck Harry, you need to keep fighting, a lot of us get inspiration from your work. 😃
Hi Harry Was good talking to you in Marbella, and I'm glad you took my advice of having a good few drinks. I'm disappointed that you even let the thought of 'not being good enough' enter your head. As I said to you, you've been a great source of inspiration to people like me. I don't think people who watch your channel get a good idea of your physical stature. You're looking in great shape. Get your back sorted out and keep grinding. The results will come. Keep your chin up, kid. And I hope your personal issues work out for the best.
Sorry to hear this news Harry. It was amazing following you on the day and I was gutted to see you pull out. Well done, loads learned from this and ultimately I hope you had fun and enjoyed your stay in Marbella. Your boat is very nice.
Thank you for sharing the highs and the lows. Hard to make a decision to DNF but great that you can focus on the bigger picture in the heat of the moment. I’m sure that you’ve positioned yourself in a better place for Challenge champs by making this tough decision. Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll get the results that you deserve!
Good effort Harry and praise for the honesty. Not all races go the way you want. That’s racing though! Some days you just feel better and can perform at higher levels. Other days it doesn’t go your way. The pro level is insane now. It’s not what it was 10 or so years ago. It makes the good days mean more though when they go your way. Keep going mate
Also DNFd last Sunday. Bad swim, then paced myself on the main climb to protect my legs (I’m 83kg) and then missed the cutoff at 47km by 5 minutes. Gutted as I was mentally and physically good for that second climb, where the sweeper picked up everyone who’d gone too hard on the first climb which is the mistake I didn’t want to make. Take the L and onto the next one. 🤘
Hills pay bills. In all seriousness, I’m about your size, ride a heavy felt IA, so I feel that about hilly courses. I think when feasible racing courses which suit your strengths is something worth considering. I know it’s way different as a pro, but from my perspective I can only do so many races in a year before my wife threatens divorce, therefore I try to races which I think will be fun (and by fun, I mean somewhat competitive for me, because I don’t care how pretty the course is if I’m constantly getting dropped). Obviously you can increase specificity but I would imagine that’s only ideal for championship and “A” races. Videos are always appreciated, even when they probably suck to make! Thanks dude
I believe being a pro is a whole different ball game , if you were struggling on race day , it is absolutely Ok to DNF, you do this to make a living and so you do have to think about the bigger picture - the whole season. If you are in pain, or just having an off day therefore not focussed you are much more likely to have an accident or get an injury which would be a much worse outcome. All you can ask of yourself is to put the training in, show up on race day, do your best and learn something from every experience which will ultimately make you a better athlete in the long run. The results will come in time, it just needs everything to come together on the right day! Don’t apologise, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Onwards and upwards to the Challenge champs!
I don’t feel you need to justify to anyone but you. I get that exposing yourself on social media comes with a price. I just wonder what the mental impact of a dnf vs a finish is. Totally get your logic. Best of luck for your next race!
Great debrief Harry and the right decision for a pro who has a lot more left of the season. Experience gained from participating at this level is invaluable and you've still got age on your side!
Unfortunately you can prepare as well as you can but when biology is involved, stuff can and will happen. Chalk it up to experience, get back to it and go into the next race with a clear head. Don’t keep it on your mind as that will create a negative loop and be self perpetuating. As for your doubts on whether to keep going….it’s natural when you’ve had disappointment to go to a dark place. But dark places get glimmers of light, and if you follow these lights, you will hit bright sunshine! You are doing well….you are better than you think and a few bad results do not change that. Failure makes you stronger. Stay strong, stay positive
Fair play harry, was following along and was concerned about what happened when you dropped off the tracker. Glad you're ok. Sorry it didn't pan out how your training has been going. One bad race doesn't mean much in the long term. I see that your margins are so tight in the pro field for a good/mediocre/bad result. I'm sure you are already considering it, but a flatter race in a cooler race environment must suit you better. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing the pain. Maybe try and mix some road racing (bike) as part of your training, Brownlees, G Jorgensen have done. Especially good if you can race against categories above you.
Always watch you Harry and think your honest battler mate. Not sure how it works but with hill surges and catching on the down..can you pass some or all on the down hills and then be up the front when next surges go on uphills? Then you can just trickle back through the field as the climb kicks in? Here's me telling you how to suck eggs but love how you race 👍
Harry, I completed a race this past weekend and had a massive gluten issue and walked the second of the run and this is why I do Ironman - not the place, not the win but the journey. That is why we do this. Where you come in a race, and what watts you ride are irrelevant it is about making the sport inspiring. DNF is a failure. Finishing is a win no matter what place you finish. Take this positively not negatively. What did you learn? I would say not to DNF is what should be the takeaway. It is an early season just dig deep and you will see the rewards. Lionel never gives up... Sam does not either, Jan does not give in and the list goes on.
I guess top pros will ride a 10min effort at 6W/kg. (Cyclists have an FTP of 6W/kg, so why not go close to FTP for a few minutes?) And they are doing these surges to exactly drop the guys who are not able to hold their wheel. Good luck for the next race maybe on a flatter course!!
Maybe approach the hills a different way in that you wasted energy trying to stay with them and then braking when you catch them. 20w less climbing and you would probably catch them on the downhill and not have to brake. You tried to keep with them and race their race not yours. LCB led the vast majority of the race at the weekend and still got chased down on the run and those that beat her hadn't cooked themselves beforehand
I’m sure some of them are but I was actually catching on the flats and downhills. I think the issue is the long uphills with the weight of myself and my set up but also the style of riding I’m not that good at
@@Harry-Palmer interesting. As an age grouper I've never had an issue with weight holding me back and I'm not the lightest! I guess when you get into the pro field everything becomes more of a factor due to the smaller margins. Good luck for the next one :)
@@LucasCanDrum It's all about horses for courses. On a flat course heavier athletes have an advantage but on a hilly course (especially in a pro field where people race for position and so put in surges) the square-cube law swings in the opposite direction. It's probably compounded with the fact pros have a big incentive to do races that suit them so a hilly course will tend to attract lighter athletes.
Knuckle down train hard and sensible concentrate on triathlon and not social media , give it 💯 at the next race , leave these videos alone until after the next race..and you will see good results
I’m a fan of the channel but…..yeah you should just grit your teeth and get through it! I’m not a coach but I’ve been training and racing endurance sport for 30+ years with hundreds of races under my belt but just 2 DNFs because of mechanicals. Sometimes you feel terrible in a race….but you persevere. You could/should have jogged round and finished, you’d have had an even better training day. Like someone else said pulling out means you are more likely to do it again in the future. It becomes the norm. So often I hear athletes talk about their numbers, for once leave the PM at home and just bloomin’ race!! Go with the pack and blow up, then do it again next time and eventually you might be able to hang on. I apologise for the bluntness but you shouldn’t be wasting your talent!
Pro racing and age group racing is very different mate. I’m racing a lot more than your average age grouper meaning if a race is going to shit which it was then there’s no point in continuing if you’re going to do more damage- like I said my back and stomach were in pieces so it would just be me walking a half marathon- no point in that at all. Plus having your girlfriend break up with you a few days before the race isn’t ideal- like I said lots of mental stuff going on which didn’t help. I was close to not even racing due to this but wanted to give it a go and that’s what I did- sorry if you think I should be better but sometimes shit happens and atleast I tried.
Point taken re pro v age grouper. I think you have a heap of talent, your swim is putting you up there with the better athletes. Just love to see you say f1ck it gonna go with the pack today and to hell with the consequences, then however you feel go out and run as hard as you can. It won’t be pretty but you’ll be stronger for it. Maybe Challenge Champs is a good course to do that on. Sorry about the domestic stuff, wasn’t aware. Hang in there, you have age on your side….unlike some of us😂
Sorry but you need to take a Leah out of Joe Skipper’s book and don’t DNF just because you don’t feel it and think you’re not performing. Not finishing the race is just wasting your money and time. You might learn something finishing your races which will help you perform better in the future. Not very inspiring, I’m fact no inspiration from this channel for some time now.

Love your videos! I know it’s not the result you wanted but each race is an opportunity to learn something new. On to the next one!
Get your PM properly calibrated. Calibration with a head-unit is only a zero offset

I DNFed at Ironman Australia on Sunday due to dehydration. Keep on pushing
Sorry to hear this mate! All the best
Tough race, I was racing too as an AG'er - almost DNF after one lap of the run as well but pushed through. Too much paella the night before lol.
Love following your journey. Keep up the good work!

You could try calling it Lanzarote instead of "Lanza". That may help with your racing 😉
Mate, believe in the process, results will come, consistency is key
As an 85kg age grouper, for me the most important thing is to finish, time is secondary. No more DNFs, finish to show the ex and the doubters.
Great debrief Harry and the right decision for a pro who has a lot more left of the season. Experience gained from participating at this level is invaluable and you've still got age on your side!

It sounds like you need to find the right event. As an 82+kg rider, I definitely feel that pain of trying to ride up a long hill 😭
Good man Harry. Would you do some bike racing in the winter? It'd really help your race brain.
Early days as you say mate.. onwards and upwards 👌 keep going 😊. Stay positive 👍🏽… the yacht 😂
Failure is fuel for the the fire.
May be worth checking your power meter? Seems crazy getting dropped at those sorts of power numbers, going off what other pro's numbers are like.
Thanks for sharing the pain. Maybe try and mix some road racing (bike) as part of your training, Brownlees, G Jorgensen have done. Especially good if you can race against categories above you.
