Founded by Tsukahara Bokuden, one of the most famous samurai of the Warring States period of Japan. Tsukahara Bokuden studied Katori Shinto Ryu first then created his own school of Kashima Shinto Ryu.

It's not much to look at, no eye candy. However, this stuff is deadly. Much thought has gone into it's distillation, 212 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukahara_Bokuden) fighting men were killed in it's development. An individual becomes formidable with, and against, any durable hand held object with this type of training.

It has to teach you principles of the sword to drill, it isnt combat simulation. Btw. in shinto ryu, techniques arent explicit in kata, swordmen/shinto monks tried to hide their techniques, but they still needed represent their school publicly and in front of other schools.
