  • A little bit of controversy never hurt anyone...
In fact, in a society where honour based violence still exists, addressing controversial topics may even save a woman's life. This talk is based around a needed conversation surrounding Honour and how harmful a community's obsession with purity may be. The solution has always been there, we just choose to ignore it.
Its time we put an end to honour based violence.
Video credits: 2Beards Film and Video Production. Sarah Yousef is a postgraduate student at university of Manchester studying International Political Economy. Always enjoyed speaking about social issues, during my undergraduate degree I co-founded a society called ‘Aspiring Young African Leaders’ that set up debates surrounding issues within the continent and potential ways to resolve them. Currently Part of a project with the university that looks to de-colonise the curriculum and address the present attainment gap for students of colour. However, I’m most passionate about vocalising issues faced by women globally but particularly honour based crimes faced by women of colour present throughout the world. Being North African means I am exposed to narratives surrounding ‘honour’ regularly. After writing about this for my undergrad dissertation and various spoken word pieces, it’s about time it shifts from just words on paper to an obligatory conversation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

that's a good idea to educate pepople via plays.
fight against toxic masculinity, patriarchy and radical fundamentals can end up in decapitation.
it happens so often and that's why pepople are afraid to change.
we need brave women and men, only by working together we can break this chain of violence.

Some points were lost due to your nerves. Nonetheless, this was good.
I can imagine as a young(potentially) unmarried Muslim woman, speaking so openly about this topic is pretty nerve-racking and requires balls.
For that you’re admirable, and your beauty is undeniable. Well done.

I’m pretty sure the law has protections for all sorts of abuses. It’s up to the person to make the decision to use the right words when speaking to authorities. Also it’s a fight that’s almost helpless because children and even adults a lot of the time can’t think of life without family. It’s a physiological issue.

      The "right words"....
      Wow.
And yes. There are laws.... Like fgm but that still happens... Like murder but women are still killed in 'honour'....
And speaking to authorities.... No. Why? This is the weapon of shame. Shame stops women leaving and reporting.
