Fun fact, bf1942/43 didn't have swastikas either. They did get rid of the eagle in bf5, which was disappointing. And for all the political stuff of the other campaigns, the German campaign was amazing.

So they originally wanted to make the final mission to put the player in control of the bombardier of the Enola Gay. The bomber would fly along its projected flight path and the player would've had to line up the bomb sights and drop the payload on the city. The mission ended up getting scrapped in favor of showing the raw footage of the actual event instead. The creative directors feared that the mission could've put the whole project at risk of being rejected by the ratings committee given the unprecedented level of violence the player would've needed to commit.
This and the speech that followed it was the better compromise. Seeing the actual footage of the event drives the conclusion of the game's story a lot closer to home, and it spared the player from having to commit the act themselves.
    This game is a masterpiece.

The Berlin levels in particular look like the apocalypse. Everything is destroyed, ash and rubble, it looks more like a Fallout game. People fighting through collapsed buildings, people using wardrobes and sofas as barricades, climbing through mountains of concrete.

A lot tried to surrender at the Western Allies. Some were lucky; some were given to the Soviets. Those who had no opportunity to surrender to the Western Allies fought to the death because they knew how brutal the Soviets are. The old, the young, the weak fought for their lives. CODWAW just gave an intro of the brutality of War.

What makes World at War different is the level of brutality that you don’t usually get in other WWII games. The atmosphere is relentlessly grim. Your squad mates don’t quip like they’re in a Marvel movie. They used real archive footage in the cutscenes, including some pretty awful stuff like executions and massacres. Finally, all the weapons do realistic damage to a human body. Everything from limbs blown off by machine guns to the sound of flesh sizzling after using the flamethrower. The gameplay and missions aren’t realistic, but they’re extremely immersive.

i guess its always the cliche that your depicted as some sort of super soldier who "cheats death" multiple times throughout the story, but that's really all I could think off. It's pretty straight forward, there's no side chatter unless its needed and if it is present, its more of a background that the player can choose to focus on (or rather, natural curiosity prompts the player to look and listen). For example, the scene where four Russian soldiers kill a German, or the scene where a platoon of Russians execute surrendered Germans. It's a side element, but the game is so immersive you can't help but look upon the grim fate of those POWs.

One thing I remembered from Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried is that he mentions how it a war story ends with triumph and great virtue, then it’s not a true story. This game ends like a story, not by simply telling us “hey we won the Germans and Japanese lost, we’re the good guys”. When in here it shows that even though the war ended, it never changes all the lives lost during its reign

War is no game. No matter how much was shown in this game or any other WW2, nothing compares to how truly horrific and how brutal the Second World War was…

As the choir sounds while we follow the bomber flane carrying the nuke to it's destination and then......
they go silent for a few seconds showing the mushroom cloud forming itself high in the sky.
The HARDEST cutscene ever given to us

The gritty black and white shaky footage of the B-29 with the low note chorus and that white scribble at 0:28 gives me the chills every time with that camera view and the clouds in the background over the pacific sent to forcibly make our enemies surrender

I can’t help but feel a deep irony to Mac Arthur’s speech. “A world founded upon faith and understand”. Look at what the nazis did to the Jews during the Holocaust and the period before that. “Give man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish… of freedom, tolerance and justice” Where did that get you? 60 million dead in one single conflict

I wish more studios and games like Treyarch and World at War would emerge. That take war not to a fun and haha experience and show how brutal it was. Unimaginable in a time of Twitter activists and hypocritical moralists that do not even understand ethics and philosophy in first place. Look what it caused. Vanguard looks like a clown fiesta and BFV a mockery.
Vanguard don't even specify the enemy, WW2 does not even say concentration camps...
World at War showed executions and live burials to set the atmosphere. While Woke Warfare spits onto it.
Edit: With all the uprising of far-right politics and parties in Europe and a greatly more unstable and divided US plus the wars ongoing now, especially in Ukraine. Future does not look bright and it seems that history could repeat itself. This madness has to stop now.

I love how this game gave us first gave us hope of a heroic ending that the war is over with the planting of the soviet flag on top of Berlin with the soviet anthem playing in the backround and the choir singing in the backround when we see the plane but then...
When we see the mushroom cloud... silence. then we the last 2 panels, the tone is very scary and tragic...
Legit, this cliffhanger is infinity better then Ghost' cliffhanger... and we remember the the cold War happen right after the horrors of world War 2...
This game truly teaches us that War is not a game. This game is creepier then most horror movies
