“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” - Mark Twain
In Boy Scouts as a kid one year we made a wooden plaque with that quote on it for Fathers Day. It hung on our wall in the den for the entirety of my youth until I had my 1st born. At that time my father gave it to me to hang in my den.
I used to tell my students they would come back to me with this quote one day after being flustered with me regarding rules enforced on the college campus. (I mentored, but did not formally teach.) Some did, laughing. "You tried to tell us there were reasons and that you cared. Thank you for caring. I never forgot."
I very much appreciate hearing that quote. What's remarkable is that I've never heard it before and I've been a big reader all of my 76 years. Well, 72 of them!
The modern version goes something like this - "When I was in high school, I couldn't believe what idiots my parents were. By the time I graduated college, I was impressed with how much they learned while I was away."
I used to work for Graham Nash at his Hollywood recording studio a long time ago. One day they were testing transferring the analog master tape mix of this album to a digital machine. Graham stood there and goes "It still sounds great", meaning the music. So I asked him why, in his opinion, their first two albums were still so great and he told me "Because they were made with a lot of love, man, a LOT of love". And that about summed up his attitude about his work, that it was important to convey a universal love, a love for all life kind of love, into everything. It's a great value to live by, even though we're human and we'll repeatedly fall short and sometimes fail, but keep striving for that anyway. Graham was a cool guy.

I'm thankful that I'm close to all of my children, and they seem to genuinely love me more than I ever thought possible. The anthem of my youth has become an ode to joy. An aspect of this that I learned my father-in-law who had his children at a very young age is that, with luck, most of the relationship between you and your children will be as grown-ups. Childhood is fleeting. Twenty five years is a lifetime when you're 25 -- it doesn't seem that long ago by 70. The turn of the 21st century doesn't seem like so long ago to me. My youngest daughter turns 27 next year, and my oldest turns 40 next year. One of the miracles of my life is how I, as an only child in a dysfunctional family of origin, somehow ended up with five children and a happy marriage. I think that Graham Nash wrote it with his relationship with his dad in mind. His father was a WWII vet and, although he was British, he may have struggled as fathers in the US did with the idea that his son opposed the Vietnam war and questioned the government's motives. But it did echo with me recently as my relationship with my mother can be conflictual, and it took us having big fallings out and not talking to each other for months for some things to get better.

So proud of them but often reflect on how we raised them. I know we were very very young parents and did not always do and say the right things but it all worked out perfectly.

@@randy8297 It's Jerry Garcia on the pedal steel. That was the first take and as perfect as it was, Jerry wanted to do another take and got mad at Crosby when they said no.
My oldest is almost 30 and has given us two beautiful Grandkids. Our youngest is now 24. I loved this song and CSN as a kid. Understood it as a parent and now a Grandpaw appreciate it's message completely.
This is such a sweet song! Amber you said ‘We may not always get it right’. Well, nobody ever gets it always right when it comes to raising children. For what it's worth, my opining is you are doing great! It's Sunday morning here and I have to go to the bakery for some croissants, but that will be with a tear in my eye. 💖 your reaction!
A huge part of teaching your children well is to teach them that Sunday morning is about more than food and donuts (or football even). Get your children and yourselves to church on Sunday morning and you will go a long way toward being taught well as opposed to turning out as an atheist.
I used to sing this to my older children. Of course, I remember seeing CSNY at Woodstock when I was a student, so this song was amongst the first which came to mind when our first children were born, almost a decade later, and on the opposite side of the Globe. My daughter sings it to her kids today, and one of my older grandsons, who is 12, sang it at his school assembly in Victoria a couple of weeks ago. So, that's three generations so far singing this Brit, Graham Nash's song.
This song is from the 60's. Stephen Stills (phenomenal guitarist who wrote "For What It's Worth" and performed it with Buffalo Springfield), Graham Nash (sang with The Hollies and has a beautiful song "Our House") David Crosby (wonderful tenor who performed with The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man" is very quirky and controversial) and Neil Young (personally not a favorite of mine but also sang with Buffalo Springfield). Check out CSNY "Marrakesh Express" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"
Have you ever heard of Foxed and Fossils? Check out their cover of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and other CSNY songs. ruclips.net/video/S23VK1v9dB8/видео.html
I had my children at a very young age and yes they have taught me many things good and bad over the years. I now have a grandchild in San Diego and I live in New York, it goes fast and furious at times so remember to breathe and take as much of it in as you can. 3 generations later and this songs message still resonates.
Every time I hear this, I think if my children (all adults now with kids of their own). It never fails to make me tear up even though I've listened to it for decades. It's perfect.
I am so glad you reacted to this song because it was requested by many, who had you two in mind knowing you could resonate with this song! A very well thought out message to young parents such as yourselves! Well done Jay and Amber, well done! Cheers to you and may you and your family continue to be blessed with much love, happiness and good health! ☮💕👍👏
Love this song, CSNY are some of the bands I grew up listening to., Seals & Crofts. Little River band all fantastic artist before there time as it comes to their lyrics on just what it means simple things, family, love, good friends, I’m glad I grew up on this music 💕
Just realized after watching dozens of your reviews that it's not really about the music so much as it's about how you communicate with each other with such obvious love and respect. It's addictive. You'd better hold on tight to each other. You've got something special going on. Nice job!
Amber, watching you actually made me tear up. I was around 18 when this album came out. The message of this tune is to learn from and help bridge the "generation" gap. Many great memories with all of your reaction videos. You are both a wonderful blessing in my life. Peace and love to you and all my other friends here!!
That is the main reason I become a patreon supporter: Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Oak Ridge Boys. These groups are as real as can be. Human, kind loving folks that want the best for everyone. oh ok, I almost forgot... wanted to watch your entire reaction to "Titanic", which is another thing I'm totally crazy about. Oh well... Thank you guys again for reacting to CSN. I've loved them since mid 1980's. Yes... that long ago. lol Thanks Sylvia
Their harmonies were amazing. Listen to Suite:Judy Blue Eyes. It’s one of those songs that I would take to a desert island. Just an awesome, superbly written and performed song.
@@otisyoung7061 I remember now. They did the Woodstock version, which is not great, and I believe I even commented then to view the official video from the album. Thanks.
I came home from school one day when this album came out and caught my very straight rock music and hippie-hating parents sitting in my room listening to this song on my stereo. Blew my mind. Then they asked me about another song they had heard playing through the walls that I knew to be a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song called "Right Between The Eyes" which I played for them. That was the only time I ever remember them listening to my favorite music by choice and enjoying the message they heard.
I've been playing this over and over, waiting for my 15 year old to bust out the verse, " and know they love you" he does this often with my song choices from a GEN X Mom with ❤
I love y’all’s comments so much. You guys are on the right track. My son is now 34 and my daughter is 30. Yesterday, they were babies. Throughout their upbringing, most of the time, things were good. But we then went through a financial downturn. Yet even then, we did our best to keep the equilibrium. We are proud of them both. You know, in the blink of an eye, you’re kids will be adults. And most of your life with them will be when they’re adults. It’s so strange when you realize that!
Everything off Deja Vu is great… try Carry on (great harmonies that move to an almost psychedelic ending)… Helpless……title track Deja Vu….and for a hippie nod do Almost Cut my Hair
This is such a beautiful song and I've been fortunate to be listening to it for many many years. The harmonies, the melodies, the lyrics and and the song as a whole, is a wonderful experience. Can't ever go wrong with CSNY. Another one you may want to try is "Carry On" off of the same album. Just too many great songs on that one. Happy Birthday to your oldest one.
Listening to my Oldies is precious to me, but being able to do it with your family is really like going into another dimension. Thanks for your sharing.
Thank you listening to one of my favourite songs ever. CSN & Y produced some fantastic music & I hope you'll explore more. I think you'll love 'Our House' , 'Marrakesh Express' and 'Southern Cross' all great songs.
Amber's reaction was my exact reaction the first time I heard this song, and to this day I still can't listen to it without choking up (or singing along, which for some reason seems to help control the emotion). Thank you for reacting to this, keep doing what you do and being who you are!
I love this reaction. And I hope you are sharing all of this beautiful music with your children as well. It means that in 15 or 20 years we will have some informed and compassionate people on this planet. Thank you so much.
I don't have children but I have a godson and when you say that having kids changes you...that little boy unlocked a part of my heart I never knew existed. I feel you 100% here and Amber, I WAS bawling by the first "and know they love you". I always do now, LOL!❤
What a great reaction! I love how thoroughly y’all get it! I’m 69, so I have heard this song MANY times…this was the 1st time it made me cry. Y’all are so precious! ❤❤❤
Neil Young is the 4th member of CSNY, helping form the group of 4 from time to time. Other great songs from the group are Southern Cross, Wasted on the Way, and Our House (this one I think you would love).
Jay & Amber, you'll love CSNY's "Our House", "Carry On", "Find The Cost Of Freedom" and "Deja Vu"!!! Neil Young was only briefly in the group. When you get back to CSN, check out their "Southern Cross", "Helplessly Hopiag" and "Marrakesh Express"!!! (you already did CSN's "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes") I saw CSN in concert August 1982, and Graham Nash open for Joan Armatrading. July 1986.
This song was recorded in 1969 and still can listen to it over a million times! I probably first heard it when I was a teenager since I was only 5 or 6 when it first came out. I know, I'm a lot older than you guys. However, I LOVE when a younger generation hears some of the greatest music of all time! I suggest you listen to Carole King next! "So Far Away" or It's too Late" or "I feel the Earth Move"....
Beautiful song with a great message! Released in 1970, Graham Nash wrote this one in 1968 when he was still with The Hollies. You should check out the whole Deja Vu album that this came from. Incredible classic! Here's the track list, in case you want to do them in order: 1) Carry On 2) Teach Your Children 3) Almost Cut My Hair 4) Helpless 5) Woodstock 6) Deja Vu 7) Our House 8) 4 + 20 9) Country Girl 10) Everybody I Love You
Vale - David Crosby One of the best & greatest Singer/Musicians has passed away aged 81. Along with his mates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young, Crosby created some of the most iconic late 60's & early 70's music. I know they started in the mid-60's, though to me they epitomise WOODSTOCK. The Vocal harmonies rival anyone else in the music world. Their Guitar work and their sublime Bass lines were ground-breaking and ahead of their time. Even as a very young child I knew their music was very special. RIP Mate, thanks for all the musical joy you brought us.
Yes! I swear I learned more from my daughters than I ever taught them. We were also very young...18.5 when I had our first daughter! Our first daughter was our "thinker" (she'll soon be 42), our second daughter was the "do-er" (she turns 40 on 12-24). To this day? They're still that way! Now, I'm learning from my grandson (20 yrs old) & my granddaughters (14 & 6 yrs old). I treasure being a younger Mimi and love all that each one teaches me!!! I'm so blessed and y'all will continue to be very blessed. Love you both and those beautiful kiddos of yours, too! 🧡
I love you guys . You guys GET IT .. I was a teenager in the 70s and got to live with the greatest era of music. The music really did shape people lives in many ways , and I’m so happy that you are experiencing that now .
Some additional context for this song. It was being written at a time when political, social, and values opinions differed so starkly between age cohorts that the term "Generation Gap" was coined to denote it. To get a feel for how fraught relations between the older and younger generations could be at the time, just watch one of the earlier episodes of "All in the Family", both because one of those episodes would be closer to contemporary with this song and because the show "jumped the shark" in later seasons. So this was a plea for inter-generational peace and tolerance at a time when this was in short supply.
Got to see CSN&Y early 70s and just CSN years later. The best harmonies ever. As a music lover I try to keep current but these nostalgic tours are wonderful. Still love so much if the music from late 60s and 70s.
This is by far my favorite song from them. Such a reflective song. I listened to it a lot when my children will little. It helped me get through the tough times when I thought I was not good enough to raise them.
this group (with or without neil young) has the most exquisite harmonies. try helplessly hoping. i also really love the songs delta and southern cross both from daylight again.. youre welcome!
CSNY are so good! Deja Vu is such a good album! My favorite song is “Carry On/Questions”. “Woodstock” is another good one! A sad song they wrote is called “Ohio” it talks about the national guard coming onto the Kent State University in 1970 to break up a protest and they left 4 students dead.
The tears started falling at this song, which I haven’t heard for a long time. I brought back memories of 14 1/2 years ago when my husband died and the role reversal with my 5 kids taking care of me. I’d be lost without them! Also, I love the pedal steel in this song! My brother lives in WV and he plays pedal steel in a local band. It’s been his instrument of choice for over 30 years.
There’s some cool vids on RUclips of master pedal steel players covering Dire Wolf and showing how to play the solos note for note. Pretty killer stuff.
This beautiful song hits all stages. As a mom of 2 young adults, they don’t always follow the path you envision, but it’s precious to see them find their place in the world. My grown kids have taught me so much about compassion and acceptance of others, and they are great people with kind, loving hearts.
I appreciate hearing your love for your children and your love for each other. Keep it up. Parents who love each other is a tremendous gift to children.
Love that REACTION of you two at 2:30+ I have heard these songs hundreds of times or more, but what I enjoy here is the REACTION of the younger generation, most have no idea back then we did not have the modern instruments(as we have today). You two guys are an endorsement to those days.
I have always loved Crosby, Stills, Nash with/without Young! Their harmonies are so good! The music is so mellow and the lyrics have so much meaning. Love your reactions to the music of my youth, it was a great time for music and social upheaval.

You guys. Talk about coming undone. You’re making me cry all over the place! You’re awesome.
If it’s Sunday morning you need to be heading to church. Besides most churches nowadays will have coffee and donuts in the lobby.
A huge part of teaching your children well is to teach them that Sunday morning is about more than food and donuts (or football even). Get your children and yourselves to church on Sunday morning and you will go a long way toward being taught well as opposed to turning out as an atheist.
The message is powerful. I'm 66 and this song carries so much meaning. RIP David Crosby.
This is one of my very favorite songs of theirs.
Love you guys. Thanks for being a great example of loving kindness to those who watch your reactions.

Raising great kids off a great song, bless our children ❤
Too wimpy do their electric and stop top 40
Love this song, CSNY are some of the bands I grew up listening to., Seals & Crofts. Little River band all fantastic artist before there time as it comes to their lyrics on just what it means simple things, family, love, good friends, I’m glad I grew up on this music 💕
Beautiful reaction, so sweet. ❤
Just realized after watching dozens of your reviews that it's not really about the music so much as it's about how you communicate with each other with such obvious love and respect. It's addictive. You'd better hold on tight to each other. You've got something special going on. Nice job!
Actually it’s CSNY&G, since that’s none other than Captain Trips himself- Mr. Jerry Garcia- on impeccable pedal steel guitar! 🎸🔥
Amber, watching you actually made me tear up. I was around 18 when this album came out. The message of this tune is to learn from and help bridge the "generation" gap. Many great memories with all of your reaction videos. You are both a wonderful blessing in my life. Peace and love to you and all my other friends here!!
A favorite classic. We sang this song for our confirmation from Sunday school. Man, does it bring back memories. Thanks guys.
Yes... that long ago. lol
Thanks Sylvia
Their harmonies were amazing. Listen to Suite:Judy Blue Eyes. It’s one of those songs that I would take to a desert island. Just an awesome, superbly written and performed song.
They did do this one half a year ago
You know you can watch this with your kids!
Another song by them that I know you will love is called
Our House.
And don't forget "Wasted on the Way"
love that song!!!
My 19 year old Severely Autistic Son teaches me to be better every day. Go hug your kids.
Loved that reaction to a song I’ve known for 35 years plus, and you somehow made it new for me.
So many good songs from CSN and CSNY. "Our House", "Southern Cross", "Wasted on the Way", "Marrakesh Express", "Ohio", "Just a Song Before I Go".
Some of the greatest harmony ever!! My kinda jam for all these decades. Beautiful song! Phenomenal Song for the ages!! ❤️🎶
This is what it's all about. Great reaction y'all!
I love this reaction. And I hope you are sharing all of this beautiful music with your children as well. It means that in 15 or 20 years we will have some informed and compassionate people on this planet. Thank you so much.
Carry On and Southern Cross are 2 very different sounds but fabulous!
I don't have children but I have a godson and when you say that having kids changes you...that little boy unlocked a part of my heart I never knew existed. I feel you 100% here and Amber, I WAS bawling by the first "and know they love you". I always do now, LOL!❤
And, hopefully, the world shows them all its kindness. ❤
That's such an amazing song!
Nope all 3 kinda wimpy especially the first 2 just garbage to raise money quick...Listen to 4 Way Street way better
Ohio too
Wow! 🎉 I just glanced at the subscribers. 300,000! I remember J just by himself learning the ropes. Congrats 👏
Bless you guys...keep diggin'......................CSN, CSN & Y........and each individual artist....don't stop. Peace & Love
July 1986.
Next up from the Crosby,Stills,Nash, and Young Deja Vu album should be Our House! You both will LOVE it!🐈🐈🏡🎶💜
This song was recorded in 1969 and still can listen to it over a million times!
Here's the track list, in case you want to do them in order:
1) Carry On
2) Teach Your Children
3) Almost Cut My Hair
4) Helpless
5) Woodstock
6) Deja Vu
7) Our House
8) 4 + 20
9) Country Girl
10) Everybody I Love You
Vale - David Crosby
One of the best & greatest Singer/Musicians has passed away aged 81.
You are awesome parents! Keep the faith. Another CSNY song is Suit Judy Blue Eyes, a whole other sound from these musical icons. Thanks as always.
My youngest grandchild is now 20. This song still makes my eyes water too, Amber
I love you guys . You guys GET IT .. I was a teenager in the 70s and got to live with the greatest era of music. The music really did shape people lives in many ways , and I’m so happy that you are experiencing that now .
Love this song
Children grow and you grow along with them!!😊
Some additional context for this song.
You two are so sweet ❤️😀
This is by far my favorite song from them. Such a reflective song. I listened to it a lot when my children will little. It helped me get through the tough times when I thought I was not good enough to raise them.
this group (with or without neil young) has the most exquisite harmonies. try helplessly hoping.
i also really love the songs delta and southern cross both from daylight again.. youre welcome!
Nope wimpy acoustic try Southern Man and Carry On from 4 way Street their best stuff was Electric with Stills and Young trading leads
I cannot hear those opening chords, and not take a deep breath, and smile.
It was an absolute joy watching you two experience this song together
CSNY are so good! Deja Vu is such a good album! My favorite song is “Carry On/Questions”. “Woodstock” is another good one! A sad song they wrote is called “Ohio” it talks about the national guard coming onto the Kent State University in 1970 to break up a protest and they left 4 students dead.
CSNY are CLASSIC and music is timeless, not to mention how beautiful they harmonize together! Awesome in concert!!
Next CSNY you should react to is Love The One You're With, studio version. It'll knock your socks off! Great video guys, thanks!
Jerry Garcia from the Dead playing the pedal steel. If you like it try dire wolf from the studio album working man’s dead. It’s killer
There’s some cool vids on RUclips of master pedal steel players covering Dire Wolf and showing how to play the solos note for note. Pretty killer stuff.
I always loved this album. I grew up listening to this!
Harmony makes a life lesson go down, like sugar and medicine.
Love that REACTION of you two at 2:30+ I have heard these songs hundreds of times or more, but what I enjoy here is the REACTION of the younger generation, most have no idea back then we did not have the modern instruments(as we have today). You two guys are an endorsement to those days.
Great song!!!
I have always loved Crosby, Stills, Nash with/without Young! Their harmonies are so good! The music is so mellow and the lyrics have so much meaning. Love your reactions to the music of my youth, it was a great time for music and social upheaval.
