cool video, but what a lot of people don't seem to get is how important good panel layout and composition is. both One and Togashi are really skilled at this aspect of art, and just from looking at the few panels of The pervert I can see that the artist is a professional that chooses to draw in this simplistic style to save time. someone with ''bad'' art and no understanding of composition will probably never be successful.

I think saying that One Punch Man and HunterXHunter excel in spite of their art, is selling One and Togashi a little short. Thank you for sharing you make some great points! In a perfect world, I would agree with you that as long as you have a good story your comic or manga will succeed. I agree that art is free and doesn't have to be bound to reality. The idea that art should 100% mimic the physical world is an art movement known as Naturalism. It was really popular throughout art history, but in the 21st century, it's just one of many artistic approaches. Unfortunately the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" is wishful thinking because many people do indeed judge something by how it looks. As you said, someone might not like how the art looks, but that doesn't make it inherently "bad." It'll just be much harder for a large audience to give it a shot if they are immediately turned off. This was great to hear. I have never been good at drawing, and i feel like i havent read so much comics or manga. But recently I have gotten this major urge to just make a comic
As someone who is writing short stories, and is planning to do a full epic-style novel, like Mahabharata, I also wanted to venture in the journey of creating a comic-book/manga. Yeah, my artstyle, from 1 to 10 is 4.8 to 5.2. I can make some poses, I do have a basic understanding of anatomy, but I suck at perspective and drawing characters is such dynamic poses. Still, I do have a story I wanted to tell, even if my art-style is kinda meh, so this video really helps me to do it. Remember, your story is what matters, that's precisely what you're telling us. Do or do not, there is no try.
i have a friend where he is really passionate on his comic. His story is sure cringe worthy but after 4 years, he really improved his drawing skills... I miss him
I wrote a book I want to turn into a webcomic, and I am struggling with the feeling that my art isn't "good enough." Videos like this give me hope that I can still publish, even if the art isn't fully there. Thanks!
Hunter x Hunter doesn't have "bad" art. Those pages were later touched up by Togashi for the volume releases, and Togashi himself is incredibly talented at illustrating. I'm so tired of people saying he isn't.
They were bad at the moment. Those pages ran in the serialized magazine. YES, they were improved later when he had more time. But in the moment he was publishing bad art haha
I REALLY needed to see this video today. For years i’ve been putting off making my comic for fear of my art being “bad.” Thank you so much for inspiring me to just go for it
Thank you for encouragement bro💓 I've been trying to hold back because I'm not good enough for art and I already got a story in mind.. but seeing your video, it motivates me to continue and not focusing about how well/godlike the art is... What matters is the story, the bread which is the story💓 Thank you so much bro✨
I love coming on your channel because your amazing and have helped me a lot. I want to become a comic artist. You've shown me that dreams can come true and I'm working on it. I've been watching you since you've had 800 subs. I love watching ur channel grow. Congrats on 1k!
Nice video as always! Something else I would like to bring up is the fact that despite ONEs artwork was being considered crude, people underestimate, the fact that he was a master at conveyance through visuals. People who call his artwork “bad” tend to neglect this in fact, he was a master at being able to sell people on a scene which I believe was the true culprit behind his web comics success. Even in the official manga many of the panels are literally just murata re-drawing the original page layout in his own style. I think you have a point when you say writing matters but I also think art plays a big role because I absolutely believe that a comic that has both bad visuals and bad convenience can absolutely take away from readers experience. In fact, I would say it is most likely the biggest thing to pay attention to as comics are a visual medium. Todd McFarlane in an interview acknowledged that spawns writing wasn’t all that great, but it’s like he himself said he could sell a comic that looks pretty easier than he can sell an ugly comic that has good writing, and his success is a testimony to that. I think people who don’t make good artwork, can make a good comic , and I think such a project would be good practice for them. But I also have to stress the importance of conveyance through visuals and the importance of good writing being that comics with bad artwork need to have a lot going for them to make up for that bad artwork.
Those are very good points! Especially the parts where you talk about One's success with conveying through visuals!! Thank you for taking the time to share all of that!
most of my time i never intended on making a comic until 3 years ago.in those 3 years the story was complete planning because i still had no idea on what i wanted my story to be in those 3 years.so i kept drawing different versions of my comic and scrapping them.i eventually have the story now atliest and now already planned out something that can keep progressing the story and characters without plotholes
That's awesome to hear! I've also experienced that painstaking feeling of redoing the same story multiple times and scrapping it. As I got older I learned the importance of scripts and thumbnails LOL. It's a lot less taxing to throw away google docs and tiny 1-inch drawings rather than fully drawn pages. Glad to hear you finally figured it out though! Best of luck with your project!
I finally chose my final manga concept and I’m sticking with on an I’m proud of myself my 5 months of nothing but practice help and it all thanks to you and whytmangs kuzo thank y’all for y’all videos y’all help me kickstart my dream career
Even tho i improved a lot my art in past couple of years i am still far from a good artist. Still i am a very creative person with a very unique story in my mind and i am trying to make it. Thank you for all good advices. I feel like with them my story will become even better. Now my biggest problems are names, lack of characters and proportions, but i won't give up.
Messier art styles have become more popular in recent years with manga like JJK, CSM, and Hell's Paradise! All of those series have rougher art! Many artists are trying to intentionally make their stuff feel more messy, so don't be too hard on yourself!
you should do it, i hope it turns out well, my drawing isnt that good either so i just do the best i can, now i'm actually making my own manga on my channel, u wanna check it out?

I started doodling a comic that I had an idea for forever just cause I want to get the story on paper. I can't draw for anything though. Stick figures are the best I can do, but it's fun to make.
That sounds like a good plan haha. I actually have a video about committing to one story idea, I hope it can help! ruclips.net/video/yBp2Jzl_rmA/видео.html
One punch man is my biggest inspiration bcuz it's the only manga that can generally make me laugh and the story beside it shows that anyone can di it if they try hard enough
I'm becoming a chef but I got story ideas so I legit do not have the time to drawing, writing and cooking so I'm sticking with writing and cooking(obviously as it will be my proper profession) so if you can help who can I take my one shot manga I'm doing right now so I can make it come to life

I would say that in a comic, what makes truly bad art is not it being ugly, or not attractive, its more so art that doesn't tell the story, for example if you dont know whats happening because the backgrounds are non existent that is a problem that makes the story worse, if you dont know what the characters face is meant to be saying that is a problem. Your art doesn't need to be good if the story is good, the only time it is truly bad is if the art fails to tell the story.
Thank you for the comment! Yeah, I definitely missed an opportunity there LOL. I'm mostly biased because I think most manga have more than acceptable art and it's rare for me to be like "yeah nah this is bad." For lack of an example though, I personally think ecchi/H artists have the BEST art styles. They're so god-tier at drawing dynamic angles and attractive characters/expressions it's ridiculous. Their art usually gets overshadowed by their cringe stories though and fanservice scenes. Series like Seikon No Qwaser, High School DXD, and To Love Ru: Darkness all have STUNNING artwork, but their stories hold it back. Hope that helped!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I completely understand where you are coming from! It's easy for people to say "don't judge a book by its cover," when the reality is most of us do anyway. Whether it's relationships or buying products, we use visuals as a first indicator. With comics and manga it's the same. Someone might be drawn to a pretty cover or panel they see online. That's unfortunately just the name of the game. This video was mainly to inspire artists who are just starting out that they can continue to improve and they shouldn't NOT make comics just because they think their art is bad. At the end of the day, content is key! Best of luck!
Another good example would be Maus, the only comic to ever win the Pulitzer Prize. From the objective point of view, the art is not good but it still became one of the most famous comics ever written.
ONE published the original webcomic on his personal website. It can be found here. galaxyheavyblow.web.fc2.com/ ONE stated in an interview that Murata came across his webcomic one day, binged all of OPM and offered to redraw it for him There isn't much information about how it got so popular, I'd assume he advetised by word of mouth and on social media. The writing was always was carried the story There isnt much information about him making money from the webcomic. As a graphic designer, I know personal websites can only make money if they run ads on them. So I assume he wasn't making much ONE stated in the interview he mostly drew OPM to entertain himself. The full interview can be found here: onepunchman.fandom.com/wiki/Interviews
Art is subjective and even a 'Bad' artist can create something profound and interesting if they know what they are doing, (I'm a fan of a user on Tumbr who makes doodles or 'Lazy' drawings of One Piece and they make awesome short comedy fan comics that easily make you cackle bc they capture the essence and personality of the characters) I have respect for authors that dominate so much their own artstyles that they can exploit architecture, anatomy, SPECIFICALLY anatomy and perspective on a whim, for example Baki, it's the most ridiculous, over the top manga I have seen to date in it's artstyle but the author has an innate talent for pushing musculature to it's absolute limits and have it make sense (At least In-Universe) The irony is that his daughter is the author of Beastars, with a 'Cuter' but equally compelling artstyle
GREAT POINTS. Baki is DEFINITLY a good example of an artist doing something "different" but still good. Do you happen to remember the name of that Tumblr artist I'd love to check them out!
Heyy so, me and my friend started making a manga and as we got great feedback we wanted to be more professional. So we hired artists that would help us release chapters in time. But they all have their own artstyles and since we don’t pay them, we don’t wanna force them to draw in our style. Would a manga with different style each chapter work?
Thank you for taking the time to share! Personally I think it might be hard in the long haul, especially if you want a consistent story. I've seen it done before though. Like in the manga, Higurashi: When They Cry, the writer completely switches artists every few volumes. The story is set up into arcs though, so each artist has their own individual story arc to illustrate so its never that awkward when the art style changes. My other thought is you could designate roles, like one person is in charge of characters, one person does backgrounds and background characters or something like that. If their styles are too distinct you might want to structure some sort of agreement. Hopefully that helps!
Very true! The anime adaptation does a GREAT job making the breathing techniques look visually appealing. In the manga, especially early on, the Water Style techniques aren't THAT flashy and are drawn simplistic. Like you said, I love the little panels that showcase the funny moments or mundane scenes
Good stories can be written, yes. But I disagree with the One Punch Man example. Any story embellished, by Yusuke Murata or other very talented artist, will tremendously increase the level of success of the manga. The author of JoJo himself wrote it in his "Manga in Theory and Practice" book : Art is the mangaka killer technique, when it comes to manga, art is god. To make a successful manga, you will need at least a passable level of art. This is just my take.
Hey, Monitor, can you please make a video about drawing fight scenes on paper and drawing two characters jumping and flipping, ya know? I'm not very good at them... I'm good at animating fight scenes but not drawing fight scenes on paper because you cannot make human motion on paper... so please, make a video about that...

As someone who can't draw to save his life, this makes me happy
Thanks for video I think you’re right a good story is the brain and artwork is the body of making a comic
Seeing the original drawings of hxh and one punch man gave me so much hope. Thanks!!!
I'm glad! Thanks for taking the time to check this video out!
i have a friend where he is really passionate on his comic. His story is sure cringe worthy but after 4 years, he really improved his drawing skills... I miss him
when he started coloring i immediately knew it was little mac and doc
I wrote a book I want to turn into a webcomic, and I am struggling with the feeling that my art isn't "good enough." Videos like this give me hope that I can still publish, even if the art isn't fully there. Thanks!
Hunter x Hunter doesn't have "bad" art. Those pages were later touched up by Togashi for the volume releases, and Togashi himself is incredibly talented at illustrating. I'm so tired of people saying he isn't.
Ye Ik bro. As soon as he used hxh as an example of bad art I was like bruh u gotta be kidding me
They were bad at the moment. Those pages ran in the serialized magazine. YES, they were improved later when he had more time. But in the moment he was publishing bad art haha
@@MonitorComics But the art's fundamentals are still good, it's just a rougher sketch. Unfinished ≠ bad
Togashi just starts scribbling when I assume he gets tired. He CAN draw very well, but sometimes just doesn't
@@MonitorComics I was because he was going through health issues at the time
I REALLY needed to see this video today. For years i’ve been putting off making my comic for fear of my art being “bad.” Thank you so much for inspiring me to just go for it
Glad to hear that! Thanks for taking the time to share! Best of luck!!
"Im not at the level I wanna be at yet."
Screw you man, you hit me right in the feels...
Thank you for encouragement bro💓 I've been trying to hold back because I'm not good enough for art and I already got a story in mind.. but seeing your video, it motivates me to continue and not focusing about how well/godlike the art is... What matters is the story, the bread which is the story💓
Thank you so much bro✨
Of course! I'm glad to hear that! Thanks for taking the time to check this video out and sharing! Best of luck!
I love coming on your channel because your amazing and have helped me a lot. I want to become a comic artist. You've shown me that dreams can come true and I'm working on it. I've been watching you since you've had 800 subs. I love watching ur channel grow. Congrats on 1k!
I really needed this video. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
@@MonitorComics oh yeah as a follow up this video has unleashed me. 🤣
It did man I bin holding my self back for years thinking I wasn’t good enough because my art was not perfect
Thank you this actually helps a lot.
Super glad to hear that!!
Thanks I really need this
i needed to hear this
Yeah Ones artstyle Gave me some hope, and this video. Also nice Punch Out drawing 😌💖
Thank you! And I'm glad this video could help! Thanks for taking the time to watch and leaving a comment!
I still like it even thought it’s in bad art
ONE paneling and art layout is better than most mangakas
That is a fair point! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
most of my time i never intended on making a comic until 3 years ago.in those 3 years the story was complete planning because i still had no idea on what i wanted my story to be in those 3 years.so i kept drawing different versions of my comic and scrapping them.i eventually have the story now atliest and now already planned out something that can keep progressing the story and characters without plotholes
This vid inspire me, I consider my art bad and I don't have a unique idea for a comic or manga but this video helps a lot
Thank you for commenting! Nothing is 100% unique, so as long as you're having fun and learning, it'll be worth it! Good luck!
I finally chose my final manga concept and I’m sticking with on an I’m proud of myself my 5 months of nothing but practice help and it all thanks to you and whytmangs kuzo thank y’all for y’all videos y’all help me kickstart my dream career
Super glad to hear that!! Thank you for taking the time to share! Best of luck with your manga!!
@@MonitorComics thank you and I look forward to see more of you tips
Best advice and great video, thanks for the encouragement 💯💯💯 new subscriber
Content is always King!
Yessss EXACTLY!
This really motivates me to follow my dream
thanks alot
Even tho i improved a lot my art in past couple of years i am still far from a good artist. Still i am a very creative person with a very unique story in my mind and i am trying to make it. Thank you for all good advices. I feel like with them my story will become even better. Now my biggest problems are names, lack of characters and proportions, but i won't give up.
Also another example of a western comic that got started with a meh art style:
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
Very true! That's a great example! Thanks for taking the time to share!
this video seriously motivated me. Thank you so much
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Best of luck!
You words cut deep my friend
This gave me soo much motivation to continue drawing:)thanks!!
I'm happy to hear! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Best of luck!
Flashy,sonic,garou,blue,fubuki (webcomic) are awesome
better to go raw then not at all - pan pizza
Wise words
@@MonitorComics he is very wise yes
I'm more confident since i have a messy art style because I can't draw straight lines because of my shaky hands
Messier art styles have become more popular in recent years with manga like JJK, CSM, and Hell's Paradise! All of those series have rougher art! Many artists are trying to intentionally make their stuff feel more messy, so don't be too hard on yourself!
Bro thank you so much I have always thought about making a manga but I can’t draw good so I never have but now I’m actually gonna try its
you should do it, i hope it turns out well, my drawing isnt that good either so i just do the best i can, now i'm actually making my own manga on my channel, u wanna check it out?
Let's not forget David Yoon not saying his art is bad but it is sort of weird but I like it so much cause it is pretty amazing
just looking at the video, the first thing that comes to mind is.. tank top boxer
Thank you.
Nice Vid. Btw The maker of hunter x hunter is not bad at drawing. His Back hurts right now . So he can’t draw. But his drawing is One of the best
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! He's also on strict deadlines from what I heard, I don't blame the dude for having to rush some drawings and fix them later when the volume is ready to release. Creating manga in Japan sounds tiring LOL
I started doodling a comic that I had an idea for forever just cause I want to get the story on paper. I can't draw for anything though. Stick figures are the best I can do, but it's fun to make.
THANK YOU
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING
I have two stories in mind I might try the one im more willing to fail with first
That sounds like a good plan haha.
Very true! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and checking out the video!
I'm becoming a chef but I got story ideas so I legit do not have the time to drawing, writing and cooking so I'm sticking with writing and cooking(obviously as it will be my proper profession) so if you can help who can I take my one shot manga I'm doing right now so I can make it come to life
Thx has started making mine
Awesome! Good luck!! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and share!
Wow just found this video today and,Yah!👍👍👍👏👏👏❤❤❤ TY so much cause this help me so much I tried my best to tell my story but I don't know how to share it😔😔😔 💦💦💦and I have a problem of my drawing skill but still I wanted manga out of it and this video explanation are great I give a thumb up and Thank you very much again❤❤❤❤❤😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍🙂🙂🙂🙂
1:14 I knew this was gonna come but thought you were going to show a manga which has bad story but good art
I thought this was kurt for a sec
Honestly, I know bad art doesn't make a story bad, but I just can't imagine anyone taking my manga seriously if it doesn't have good art
That Punch Out fanart is amazing, where can I see the full version?
to simplify this video, make your manga story better, plot, subplot, suspense etc instead of making the art better
Another good example would be Maus, the only comic to ever win the Pulitzer Prize. From the objective point of view, the art is not good but it still became one of the most famous comics ever written.
That is TRUE! Thank you for sharing that! I really appreciate it!!
Hxh has bad art? I didn’t know that that’s interestinng
I found my style THANK U SO MUCH 🥰
Where ONE popularized his Webcomic? And how it got so popular?
The Webcomic was paid or gave him any money return? Or he just made for fun
ONE published the original webcomic on his personal website. It can be found here. galaxyheavyblow.web.fc2.com/
ONE stated in an interview that Murata came across his webcomic one day, binged all of OPM and offered to redraw it for him
There isn't much information about how it got so popular, I'd assume he advetised by word of mouth and on social media. The writing was always was carried the story
There isnt much information about him making money from the webcomic. As a graphic designer, I know personal websites can only make money if they run ads on them. So I assume he wasn't making much
ONE stated in the interview he mostly drew OPM to entertain himself. The full interview can be found here: onepunchman.fandom.com/wiki/Interviews
Art is subjective and even a 'Bad' artist can create something profound and interesting if they know what they are doing, (I'm a fan of a user on Tumbr who makes doodles or 'Lazy' drawings of One Piece and they make awesome short comedy fan comics that easily make you cackle bc they capture the essence and personality of the characters)
I have respect for authors that dominate so much their own artstyles that they can exploit architecture, anatomy, SPECIFICALLY anatomy and perspective on a whim, for example Baki, it's the most ridiculous, over the top manga I have seen to date in it's artstyle but the author has an innate talent for pushing musculature to it's absolute limits and have it make sense (At least In-Universe) The irony is that his daughter is the author of Beastars, with a 'Cuter' but equally compelling artstyle
OK OK
My drawing is good but I feel it difficult to set in a small box. I think about the speech bubbles
Demon Slayer Author Koyoharu Gotouge too
Her Art is not bad but it's Unique in its own way, Her art style is best suited for funny moments and comedy
Very true! The anime adaptation does a GREAT job making the breathing techniques look visually appealing. In the manga, especially early on, the Water Style techniques aren't THAT flashy and are drawn simplistic. Like you said, I love the little panels that showcase the funny moments or mundane scenes
He went and added Peter’s quote, there I said to myself, TO HELL WITH BEING LAZY!
YES
i think it could be vice versa
You're right! It definitely could! Sadly good art is pretty good at attracting people at first, but they'll leave if the story doesn't keep them!
I made two manga that are decently popular. Would you wanna read it?
Oh I love dog nigga I swear
What are the names
Basically, if you can't draw that good, you better really good at storytelling.
Tux I started making mine
i think its time i get to work
You got this! Best of luck!
Bro my style is just few sticks for legs, head, hands
Love that lol
I actually read a comic a while back called Stick Figurama, it was made by a RUclipsr that's not around anymore. So anything is possible!
