Gerard Butler casting is ok?! He voiced Stoick in the animated movies & is the only returning cast member from the animated films for this live action adaptation, he’s more than ok.
Ah yes please use a black woman with BLACK HAIR to play a pasty white girl with blonde hair Cant make this shit up, why they wanna re-racify such original characters???? I'm bouta not watch it until i can pirate it, aint no way i'm paying a single cent for that
I had to look this up out of curiosity. "Despite being primarily Scandinavian in origin, there was considerable genetic variation among them, reflecting their extensive trade and raid routes. This diversity points towards integrating and intermingling various ethnic groups throughout the Viking Age." At least it's historically possible. Same reason I wasn't mad at the LA Little Mermaid being black, the location *could* make sense. But yeah.. I've always loved Astrid's design SO much. It'll take some getting used to. Hopefully they at least keep the hairstyle the same.
@@HopAndLockDropSoppityPop uhh you do know it's not based in reality, so what if astrid is black? the director chose her personally and he also chose America Ferrera who is Hispanic to voice animated astrid. when designing fictional characters it's less about race and more about having a unique design that differentiates the character among the other characters
So like...at what point will we finally admit that race swapping existing characters for the sake of race swapping is fucking racist? Seriously its been 10+ years of this garbage. At what point will enough be enough?
First, Annebeth and now Astrid, they keep getting rid of the white and blond characters who are not portrayed as dumb blonds. Two of my favourite characters growing up. Will not pay to see this.

They could have done a live action spin off of Drago from 2. That would resolve this actress’s miscasting, expand out the world, and develop a conceptually great villain that needed it, reinforcing the animated trilogy without adding to it.
That's what I'm hoping for 😊 DreamWorks is known for showing great care and dedication in their movies, so I don't feel the same dread I do every time a Disney LA remake is announced.

I'll give it a shot. I love HTTYD and I'm hopeful this will be handled with the same level of care and dedication the original movies were, but I'm a bit skeptical too. Race swapping Astrid was.. a choice. Not historically innacurate, but if that's what they're going for, they could have just added a new character or something. Casting directors, please let POC have their own original roles in movies instead of changing beloved existing characters. I'm a bit thrown off by Ruffnut too. Nothing wrong with being curvy, but if you picked a skinny guy that looks so much like the original character for the *twin* brother.. I don't really understand the choice but as long as the acting and costuming is good it's not like the actors appearances will ruin the movie. What I'm worried about is the dragons..
Nico Parker is mixed, mostly white, and the footage out there shows a convincing enough picture of a lass that fits in with the setting of the film. The director said she was selected because she proved herself best for the role, with strong chemistry alongside Mason Thames, during auditions. I get the woke skepticism based on current Hollywood trends, but I think the benefit of the doubt is well served here. The heart of the film is Hiccup and Toothless. That's who the kids want to see, and what most parents will remember most. A boy and his dragon. Everyone else will play support to that dynamic. The visual design for the film is fine. Astrid won't be blond, but I think people will get used to the change. This ain't a live action Little Mermaid/Ariel kind of change, where clearly woke politics/representation was prioritized over performance, world-building, and narrative. Performance, music, and story will be what we will be praising and critiquing for the live action How to Train Your Dragon come June 13th.
