- Had two new cameras that needed to be tested before I started working on a project with them. Went out for a sunrise mission at a local spot to make sure the cameras had no issues and decided to bring y'all along for the ride. Hope you enjoy this one!

I came here to see the king of the morning light work his magic and wasn't disappointed.
I'm subscriber of your channel, I was thinking about getting into film photography. Can you please help me to clear some of my doubts? 😐
Yeah Evan is very good ;p
Corey: So Evan, what do you look for when shooting landscapes?
Evan: ...
Corey: Cut to next scene
😂
hmmm I wonder if it was cold
I'm suprised no one's already commented
Willem Verbeeck hhm maybe, I don’t know, I think he said that his eyes were watering but I’m not sure
was afraid i was going to hear evan's voice
Corey: Evan what are usually looking for when you shoot landscapes?
Evan:
😳.
Thanks, Corey! I will say this every day. Thank you and all of my favorite You Tube content producers so much for keeping us entertained, inspired, and educated while we are all locked up in our homes right now. About your question, I have a Nikon F3. Although I don't use it much any more, it has an excellent split image range finder focusing assist on the ground glass inside a little circle in the middle of the viewfinder. You have to focus and recompose, but it works really well for me. My eyes aren't super sharp any more, so I always use the pop-up magnifying loupe when shooting medium format film SLR cameras, like the RZ67, which obviously results in a slower process to make a photo. That old Nikon glass is pretty soft compared to anything today, but, wow, I love the colors, just like you captured here.
Could you make a video explaining the difference between focusing on a rangefinder vs SLR?
What do you want to know?
I enjoy using RFs more, it makes focusing fun in itself. But SLRs are more practical for my style of shooting, so I use those for the no-nonsense jobs
Hands down SLR and personally speaking, I adore the Nikon F3 so I'm glad I finally saw a person online that I like here use one.
Nowadays, I switch between using the F3 and the F2 but as someone who wears glasses and as someone who likes NIkkor lenses, I'm just lucky to have those two babies at the ready.
5:11 has to be my favorite photo from this video. I would definitely love to have a print of it.
Oath mate. Love that shot
Crisp mornings with Corey Wolfenbarger. 08:28 min of life well spent. Cheers!
There’s a casualness to rangefinders that I find really compelling when I’m usin’ them. They’re compact, light. So for everyday carry I prefer them for sure.
I’ve been shooting with an FM2 for about two years, and recently got an X-T1. I’ve shot with rangefinders but never really enjoyed it.
I tend to favor SLRs because I like to know exactly how my composition will turn out. Most of my cameras have DOF preview buttons and that helps me since I get to see how my photo will turn out ( assuming I get the exposure right). I did get my first real rangefinder awhile back with a Nikon S2 and the ability to zone focus is nice. But I am still not as comfortable with it as I am with my Nikon SLRs. My favorite point and shoot is the Olympus XA though and I love the fact that it is a rangefinder of sorts and that I can have that thing in my pocket wherever I go. But I guess that is a different question.
Love the video! Can't wait to see the project you do with those cameras. *fingers crossed for a zine at some point*
Evan is so photogenic. I like the portraits of him.
I gotta know how cold is "really cold" there?
About 30 degrees (Fahrenheit). Was just weird because when we met up earlier that morning it was like 50 so we weren't expecting it. Must have been the river.
@@coreywolfenbarger8992 Oh man! I'm jealous of your weather! I live in Canada, just east of Maine, and we're still colder than that most days here.
My parents just moved back from Tennessee, they lived in Crossville. Such a beautiful state.
I would love a review of the Nikon F3. Great shots and video.
I've tried a bunch of rangefinders (Leica M3 & M6, Mamiya 6, Contax G1 etc) but never liked them. So it's SLR all the way nowadays. Awesome video btw!
More Evan. I enjoy Evan.
Those golden hour photos!! Lovely!!
I think slrs and rangefinders are good for different things. For myself a rangefinder is more of a relaxed way of shooting, I align the patch and fire. The Slr gives me a bit more control on how I want the focus to look. It gives me an in real time image of the subject and how sharp the focus will be. Slr is my goto for portraits
Agree with you whole heartedly...:)
Rangefinder. No question.
Just bought an F3HP again, had one years ago. It's a great camera but I struggle now to focus quickly wearing glasses using it even with the brighter version K focusing screen. I love the camera but I regret buying one again because it's just not right for me anymore. I don't get those problems with my Mamiya 6 or using my Leica's even if I do struggle to see the edges of the frame lines on the M10 using a 35mm. Hey hol 😄
This was gold. Also can relate to shooting without feeling my fingers.. hah. Loved the images here!
Film: rangefinder
Digital: SLR
Thanks for always posting that 🔥
Owning a Mamiya 7 now for 2 months: not disappointed about the framing. I do struggle with the fact that i can't see the exact picture as with SLRs. The big upside is the leaf shutter which makes shooting at 1/30 easy, which in turn means being able to shoot f8 portra 400 at dusk and dawn.
Any thoughts on selling prints Corey? Would be great to support photographers such as yourself during this time :)
I do enjoy my rangefinder (yashika electro35 ). But it will never beat the satisfaction I have when the mirror lowdly claps !
I like how rangefinders are so fast to focus and so quiet but slr close focusing and lack of parallax issues makes me prefer them
Um that's a really well kept abandoned farmhouse. Also thanks for reminding us what it feels like to be outside on a cold, brisk morning
5:55 is dope! Definitely my favorite shot.
Corey, I think you are metering incorrectly at 5:40. You're doing incident metering, which you do correctly when taking your boy's portraits, since you want to measure the light that's hitting his face. For a general scene metering, like at 5:40, you need to slide the lumisphere (white bulb) to the right to expose the meter's sensor, then meter the reflected light. To do this, point the sensor at the scene and take the reading.
I can confirm i ENJOYED this video
I'm definitely far more used to shooting an SLR because that's what I started out with but when I borrowed a Leica M3 I didn't find the transition too different but I wasn't as quick with the rangefinder - probably because I'm less used to it.
Great shots with the F3 - would be cool to see some more action with that
I go back and forth on slr vs rf. I don't really have a fave. I guess shooting with a tele, it's easier to do so with the slrs.
Loved the photos you made in this video
5:11 is an amazingly peaceful and balanced composition. my fav, too.
hell yeeeahh!! Quarantine content, fuck yeah Corey!
defiantly a rangefinder.
i've shot them for most of my life. i recently had the chance to use my friends a-1, and it was such a weird experience for me that it made me question myself buying a a-1 or nikon f3.
How I did not about your channel!? Great and just great! 🙂
I am also all about the film but it's all on Croatian 📷😉
Well am expecting F3 prices to jump now...I love this camera though, got it a few years back and recently added on a waist level finder! Haven't shot with a rangefinder before but would love to try.
So inspired by this video! 🤩🤩🤩
This is inspiring my lazy ass to wake up before sunrise. No people, that lighting; sounds like a good time.
The Nikon F3 rules in this video. More F3 please.
Question! Why the Nikon F3 over the Nikon FM2? Just a question I hope opens a discussion, trying to learn more about preferences and such!
I have both and I like the feel of the F3 more. It is more robust in the hand and the film lever is so smooth. I also personally like to shoot in Aperture priority. Call me lazy but I just tend to think in terms of DOF so having that feature is nice. I am trying to use the FM2 a bit more so that I can expand my knowledge and get more comfortable with manually setting everything instead of being dependant on the Aperture priority.
If you want a nice in between, the FM3a if for me a nice bridge between the two.
F3 HP - great finder (peoples whit glass a must )
Aperture priority - easy for street photography.
Changeable ground glass ( I used whit Nikon E - plain ground whit lines , very fast for street ,but not the most accurate - NIKKOR- O f=35mm 1:2 lens )
Unfortunately the battery is dead after a couple of months - eawen if I not used the camera.
Nikon FM 2 - I not put battery in it - hand hold lightmeter .
Shutter speed 1/ 4000 sec - very useful with the f50mm 1:1,2 or 1,4
Film winder lever can lock the shutter release - can be annoying ( I don't liked but can be learned)
Peter from Knoxville Tn ( Sorry for my English I am Hungarian )
Nice video…how come you don’t use the light meter in the F3?
Rangefinders are awesome but the inability to close focus is a huge drawback. With that said, SLR with a split screen is the way to go.
I'm surprised by the difference between the two shots at 5:15 The colors look vastly different, but the film emulsion should be the same between 35mm and 120. Did you edit these pictures differently?
Amazing shots allround though
I love the simple title cards :) Your energy is great, love the channel
How was that young Chick-Fil-A? Shots were 🔥 as always. The farm house shots were reminding me of the documentary William Eggleston in the Real World.
4:00 is so good.
Corey always with the 🔥
I love my F3. Such a mechanically solid camera
Any plans of doing a lightroom tutorial on mimicking the flim looks on digital photos?
hair goals haha. great video corey
Awesome! Shoulda had a Chic-fil-a outro tho.
so you usually measure light manually with the Nikon f3?
Is there any reason the built-in meter wouldn't work well enough with sunny and more lighted situations?
Loved it !😊 Share more like this !
personally, i have never experienced a rangefinder but Im not per comfy with the whole not framing the picture exactly how its gonna look
i miss going outside to take film pictures
Had you snapped a shot at the 3:28 mark, the caption for that photo would've been "Geese Lightning"
I haven’t ever actually used a rangefinder more than to look through to see how to focus them. They’re cool, but I don’t own one.
Why did the Nikon images come out much colder than the mamiya when they were both portra 400?
i would love to walk on that road
we need some more nikon f3 content!!
I Always enjoy your videos!
We'll never know what Evan is looking for when shooting landscapes....
I'm an SLR guy myself but I dabble in Rangefinder stuff
5:35 me every time I shoot. That “oh lord” took me out haha
I like to shoot slr more then a rangefinder. For me the focus is way better then.
slr on 35mm and rangefinder on medium format for portability... btw what lens did you have on the F3? CZ? cheers Corey, very enjoyable as usual
Lovely video Corey, your work is very inspiring.
I was wondering if you (or anyone else) could help me though; I have an issue where the lab scans I get back are always sorta devoid of the personality you expect from film. I shot about 4 rolls of 120 fuji 400h and the colors I got (even when exposed +1 or +.5) looked like bland, unedited digital images. Do you think this is the fault of the lab doing my scans? I'm planning to get my own scanner (mainly to save money) and I'm wondering if that is going to fix it. I understand that a little color correction in post is necessary but these images literally just look devoid of personality.
Can you do a Mamiya 7 review?
Looks great!
Enjoyed the video and we need a zine! :)
Where do you get your film developed and scanned?
What do I look for, clouds, deep grey clouds with lots of charcter
Great video Man!
Wich lenses do you recommend for the F3
It seems to be the popular RUclips opinion that rangefinders are easier to focus than slrs... too bad I can’t test the difference since I don’t make RUclips money. It can’t be impossibly hard to focus slrs since most professional legends I know about shot theirs through an slr of some sort.
06:08 is my favorite shot
Just how cold was it?
Rangefinder is so much more easier to focus & the images have more of a 3d feel to them
This video look s good on my new Google phone
What lens are you using for the F3?
do you have any camera monitors with you ?
I’ve shot many a roll through rangefinders (including a Mamiya 7) and countless through multiple SLRs. I find myself second guessing focus on my rangefinders all the time. Not seeing through the lens and having an exact focusing aid, like a split image and micro prism on the ground glass, doesn’t lend itself to confidence in the accuracy of my focus/sharpness. Not to mention focusing in low light or getting flare on the rangefinder. People say all the time that rangefinders are the best and they focus so fast, and I cannot relate to that at all. Maybe I’m just a total scrub that cannot compare to all the YT film gods, who knows.
Rangefinder vs SLR? Depends. There are some cheaper rangefinder cameras where the image just does not look good at all. Small form factor though I like rangefinder, larger cameras SLR. If it's between a small camera with a crappy rangefinder and SLR then give me the SLR anyday.
He requested a comment on whether he is using his incident light meter correctly. From what I can see at 2:00 and 4.08, the answer is no. An incident meter measures light one way. You hold the meter at the subject and point it directly at the camera. At 2:00 he holds the meter at the subject and points it directly at the sun i.e., the light source. Since the sun is almost directly behind the photographer, any resulting error in measurement is slight. At 4:08, I can't tell exactly what he is doing. Looks like he's pointing the meter at the sunlite subject from about 90 degrees off to the side of the camera. If so, any correlation between his measurement and an accurate exposure is pure accident. The incident meter was specifically designed to be used in a setting where the subject it fixed and the light source(s) intensity controllable - a movie studio. They present a distinct disadvantage and difficulty when used in field work, as here, because it is often impossible to measure light from the location of the subject or a suitable substitute. A reflection meter (like in the Nikon F3) is far easier to use and generally more accurate. That incident meters are used routinely by most of the boys who rove here and there shooting photos with RB/RZ is a matter of some bemusement - I suspect it'a a "he's doing so I'll do it" thing.
Evan's skin is like the anti-Portra.
For 35mm Rangefinder, for 120 SLR.
Rangefinder 4ever!
For street photography definitely rangefinders, everything else slr's
We all know the struggle of that outro lmao
Nikon F3 is for man!!! 😀
I clicked this very quickly
Nice dude! Uploaded my first video with the F3 last week, would love to hear your thoughts!
excelente
Much prefer SLR
RIP Evan's opinion.
