Learned that ECM-s disrupt limpets when someone pointed out that they work against Scythe's breach drones when doing evacs in thargoid alert/invasion systems. But it sure is an obscure mechanics--usual for E: D. Pro tip: you can wait until the hatchbreaker/Scythe breach drone attaches to your ship and then it takes only a single tap on the ECM trigger to get it done and gone, no need to hold the ECM trigger down and less sys cap drain ;)

My first thought was if these would thwart those breach drones. I've lost a lot of passengers to those things running evav missions from stations under attack. Suicide to try and snatch them back up. I'm going to have to try this.

I managed to avoid one during yesterday's session by rolling my ship every time it tried to get underneath. Eventually it timed out and died.
Do not attempt this in a Cutter, which rolls about as fast as a small planet.

Yeah, I found out during a group mining session. The ECM fries all limpits in it's range

@jamesbigglesworth4677 I think there were 8 in range, including me. The 9th jumped in, brought some pirates with them, and during the fight, someone fired off an ECM.

You can also shake a hatchbreaker sometimes by going into a death roll, I’ve done it before in my AX Anaconda (pirates spawn at the old destroyed Titans and will try to help themselves to your stuff). Unless you’re being assaulted by huge swarms all at once PDTs will be a far better option as a completely passive module. The cooldown of the ECM will leave you very open to further hatchbreaks and instead of needing one PDT you’ll need 3 ECMs for full coverage.

I use the ECM against the Thargoid Hatch Breakers when doing evac missions. Yeah I know, I can just jump away, but killing of some hunters gives a nice pocket money. Because point defense is useless against them.

Always considered the ECM as a DOS-era essential but thoroughly undeserving of a precious utility slot these days & dismissed it from consideration pretty early in my ED career. It's definitely worth revisiting if it's plausibly effective against Thargoid hatchbreakers - I don't like losing cargo but I despise losing Thargoid refugee passengers. o7 mate, that's a damn good tip :)

"It's definitely worth revisiting if it's plausibly effective against Thargoid hatchbreakers"
They are really quite effective against Scythe breach drones, and also against their FSD disruption missiles ;) Another pro tip: during the firing (charge up) of ECM keep an eye on the radar. Everything but the missiles/drones are hidden from display and the grey missile triangle(s) turn blue when the ECM is charged up enough to disable them :) Helps you disable them ASAP and not waste too much sys cap.

I started equipping an ECM module on my mining ships because being unable to turn them off was annoying. Ibonly learned this a couple of months ago, after 4 years of playing.

I have used ECM as part of my miner for a long time mostly to just blast off my own limpets when they bug out or if i want to refresh them all together or on my return trip when pirates do manage to intercept me, swap to guns start blasting and just pay attention to sounds and safe cargo every time

  • @RetroRogersLab

If you use Point Defense to defend against limpets mount them on the underside of your ship near where the hatch is that poops out your cargo.

I did not know that, but my pair of CG point defence turrets are so OP I would only take one when I have spare utility slots in the ship.

  • @Gailim
    @Gailim 13 дней назад +1

ECM is most useful for thwarting thargoid hatch and hull breakers, as point defense seems to be innefective against them.
But against pirate hatch breakers a point defense on the underside if your ship is much more effective since it requires no input from the player and doesn't drain SYS.

The point defence can take care of incoming missiles and torpedoes sir. I've used it extensivly in guardian sites where the drones fire missiles at your srv (only to get shot down by point defence of ship parked nearby)

I don’t think NPCs run out of limpets, I’ve had an Asp Scout fire nearly 100 limpets at me (more cargo than you could get in an unshielded Asp without a controller). It may be they just don’t consume any but require at least one limpet to use them.

@@Bean41 How interesting. I was thinking the same thing, so I used a Manifest Scanner to see how many they did hold. I now know how it works, by hatch breaking those 4 limpets out and watching the pirate high wake. Not every instance is built on the same possible outcomes in this game. Something yall should know by now. 😏

You should also know that the Ecm is built around the ol 'press and hold for maximum range of effect' mechanic.
3 km takes a couple of seconds to achieve. Tap it for the one you have trying to break in. Power to pips for sys capacitor, as Ecm will use some of that.

  • @xaero5150

Not only did I know that, but there is a hack that most of the time lets you disrupt their limpets without an ecm. just load a hadpoint with missiles. fire a missile at one of the big ships and they will fire an ecm, killing their own limpets. they don't have a cooldown either.
