  • The Barbary pirates of North Africa attacked the coastal northern Mediterranean launching attacks against Britain, France, Italy and Sicily. In their feverish search for slaves a few pirates even went as far as the coast of Iceland, raiding inland to kidnap people and bring them back to North Africa.
From the 1500s to the 1800s it is estimated that one million white Europeans, to include those captured at sea as well as through land raids abroad were enslaved. Many of these were Americans captured at sea. Hosted by Colin D. Heaton. The Forgotten History Channel is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.

I am a black man and I have always resented the idea that whenever people think of slaves they only think of black people.
As you correctly pointed out, slavery was a thing that impacted virtually everyone in the world of all races.
I am a proud American who loves this country and the men and women of all races who founded it.
Slavery did not start with white people in America and America has done more than enough to end the problem of slavery around the world.

The problem there is how slavery was practiced. Pre American slavery was quite different. Mainly slaves were considered humans who were enslaved. In America, all of America not just the US, slaves were property. Pre American the children of slaves were born free. Non America slaves also were allowed to be educated, many slaves rose to positions of power. Genghis Khan had many administrator who were slaves. The general of Peter the Great's armies was a slave. One of the 4 champion of Muhammad was a slave. Moreover, the Romans also used slaves for administration. Slaves were allowed to buy their freedom. Additionally, slaves had basic rights. Owners were not allowed to kill slaves without a writ. Yes there were abuses and most slaves were used for labor. America changed that. In Virginia in the 1600s the doctrine of partus sequitur ventrem was inserted into the laws of slavery, ruling that the children born in the colonies took the place or status of their mothers; therefore, children of enslaved mothers were born into slavery as chattel. So all bullshit aside white slavery (though honestly I should say pre American, as all races were slaves) had it privileges. Pre-America a owner could have a slave of his own race. In America, you had to be Native or black. So there is no history of white slavery, there is a history of slavery, then a history of American slavery.

Gary Major Sorry, your ignorance of slavery is profound. Pre American slavery was non racist. White people had white slaves. Black people had white slaves. Slavery was not based on race. Slavery was based on circumstances. Most slaves were prisoners of war or pirate raids. America did not volunteer to end slavery, it took a war to end it legally. Then we continued it with sharecropping and Jim Crow. Slavery with slaves as property started in white America. American made a law saying children of slaves were slaves. America also made it racist and took away all slave rights. I like America, I served 9 years in the military and am a 100 percent disabled veteran. (I don't say love because I do not believe in nationalism, it leads to a closed mind) but do not white wash our history. Do remember the South withdrew to protect slavery. But the North did not originally fight to end slavery. The North fought to preserve the Union.

White slavery lasted in America even after slavery was banned. They just called it indentured servants. Millions of Slavic people, Mediterranean, and Irish were brought to America to counter the slave ban and it actually lasted into the 20th century. How do I know that? My polish great grandparents met on a plantation when they were servants. This was only 2 generations removed from myself. That’s how lucky we are to live in this time.

Back in the late 1950’s when I, a Sephardic Jew, was living in my homeland Morocco, you could go to the souk (market) and buy slaves (whites). My wonderfully kind grandfather would buy as many as he could and then set them free. They would then come back to him and ask to work for him. He would invite some to live with him to help out in the house and he would even pay for their expenses such as childbirths, marriages, etc. Really glad you brought this forgotten topic out.

I had a phenomenal history teacher (survivor of WWII) in junior high who taught us all the politically incorrect, yet critical parts of history... From white slavery to currency manipulation a la the Spanish and British, to the opium wars and everything in between... I soaked up everything he taught while most of my classmates rolled their eyes, but have spent the last 30 years stunned at how little everyone else around me knows. At first people thought I was a snotty know it all, then I spent a lot of time believing most people around me must have been slackers, and then I started to think that maybe I just had a unique experience in American public education. Now I have wizened up and realize that this is actively suppressed information, and that my beloved junior high history teacher wasn't just teaching for a paycheck. Thank you for continuing his labor of love.

You were very fortunate to have a teacher like that. I had a World History teacher in high school who attempted to teach a broader version of our textbook history (California, so...very limited historical information & definitely with a particular narrative that excludes white slavery). A student reported this teacher as straying from the textbook & so he was warned not to teach us anything but the limited garbage in our textbooks. It saddens me to hear the things I hear about what children are being taught today. It's even worse than it was when I was still in school & I graduated in the 1980s. Our youth need to know the truth. Slavery & human trafficking of all sorts has been occurring since before the birth of Christ. It has been done by all races at one time or another & continues in many places on this planet. No human being should be a slave. Ever. And no human being should be judged as evil, subhuman, stupid or opportunistic simply by the color of their skin or their religious beliefs. Noobody! As modern human beings, we may not know exactly where & when slavery began, but we could & SHOULD be able to end it. Everywhere. Forever.

As an Indian it is critical to make it clear to audiences that the major difference between Islamic and European slavery was that the Europeans focused on enslaving the men. Islamic ones were dominated by women.
That's why Hindu women practised mass suicide through self immolation whenever their men were defeated in battle against Islamic invaders.
The practice was called Jauhar. A traumatic memory in the minds of our nation.

I'm from a town that was founded by the people who survived one of their attacks. The pirates destroyed the city, burned everything to the ground, stole all the precious objects they could find in churches and palaces, and then took as many people as they could as slaves. Even the nuns from a monastery, which probably became sex slaves in North Africa. Their attacks were pretty common, and caused an economic underdevelopement in the area since they stole all they could and took people as slaves, as well as killing many men. They also introduced or re-introduced some diseases such as smallpox or malaria, causing even more damage. We have a lot of stories about these facts. We studied it at school also. I've always found it pretty fascinating.

Slavery is just as awful no matter the color of your skin. I'm Norwegian, and I've learned that many Norwegian and Danish sailors were captured and enslaved by the barbary pirates in the 1600s and 1700s. At one point the Danish king even had a separate treasury just to pay ransom for captured citizens. They used to collect money from churches all around Danmark and Norway. But the actions of the US Marines described in this video were new to me. Thanks for the information!

As a descendent of white slaves (initially, "indentured servants" paying for ships passage), my male ancestor (×grandfather) remained in South Carolina until he got too old to work and only then was granted "released from bond". His wife was "traded" to a Georgia farm, then to a Louisiana farm, as his 4 sons and 3 grandsons remained slaves until the end of the "Civil War". I can't count the times I've been called a liar over my family tree, even when presenting documentation. This country is and has been SO manipulated and misguided on this particular topic.

Slavery exists or has existed in every culture. It is the second oldest profession. Flight attendants from TWA and other airlines were kidnapped in the 1970- 80' s , and TWA ransomed them back. I have personal knowledge of this, as close family were involved. Slavery is and always has been " equal opportunity", a stain on Humanity, practiced by every major culture and race.
In addition, southern Irish coastal villages were raided and it's inhabitants carted off to Tripoli in the 1700's.

England's oldest infantry Regiment has "Tangiers 1661" as it's earliest battle honour. The phrase "Briton's never, never, never shall be slaves" (in 'Rule Britannia') relates to the abduction of whole English villages along the south coast by Barbary pirates fron North Africa.
The West Africa squadron of the RN stopped boats bound for the Americas after an English Court ruled that slavery in England (&therefore in all common law juristictions worldwide) was unlawful. It was known as 'the Somerset Case'.

Nothing disgusts me more than woke activists who claim slavery started with the white man in America. It’s so utterly ignorant. Slavery was a worldwide institution which went on for thousands of years and oppressed every race, religion, ethnicity. America had the guts to stand up and put an end to the immoral practice by going to war with itself. Yet all we get from this generation of liars and race hustlers is grief and hatred.

My. Thoughts Exactly. People forget that the theme songs from each of our Brothers & Sisters that have served and fought in battle (even our own "Star Spangled Banner") has a history where men and women of various creeds and ethic backgrounds died so that the rest of us can enjoy and thrive in both freedom & liberty. "Freedom & Liberty, bought with Blood & Sacrifice." There is another allegory that I use. "By One Man (the Carpenter), a select group of people and ultimately a nation would be both redeemed and saved; by that Nation; a World; by that World, a Galaxy; by that Galaxy, a Universe." We have yet to see the Carpenters fulfillment of that, but I have every confidence He will complete His Purpose.

Well said! All I hear is mainstream popularity shaming people about historical events that we didn't, and wouldn't, participate in. The Arabic slave trade is still ongoing. The ancient Egyptians were prolific slavers. As were nearly all countries of the world, that had any sort of population. If anything, the US practiced slavery for the least amount of time amongst all other countries. Slavery was only legal in the US for 86 years (illegalized by the Union president, a couple years before the Civil War started). While that was a sad part of our history, I'm proud of my people for being the change in the world. We were the nation that encouraged all oppressed to rise up against tyranny. And now tyranny tries to shame us for one of our best world-changing cultural shifts! The protests you see worldwide are echoes of our Revolution.

He was outbid by the local Turkish Pasha but he was so taken with her he bribed her guards and they ran away together. You can see her story on the Internet.
