"Island" Hopping in Alaska, Bucket List Airport

- We spent the 4th of July flying over some smokey & extraordinary Alaskan terrain, taking in the festivities in Seward, 90 miles from the next nearest town, before heading to an airport that's been on my bucket list for a while and the only way other than boat to access Seldovia -- an 1800 foot gravel runway with water and tall trees on 3 sides. Love your videos! They renew my faith in the younger generation, while many vloggers/influencers go for the extreme you stay in the middle of the road and show your pride in America, don't swill down macrobiotic junk, eat real food, drink real drinks and dress like a normal human being, we love you Matt and all of your friends. Let me know if you are down in Central Florida after the C-19 and we will show you the real Florida, alligators, fishing, swamp hiking and canoeing, stay safe brother!
Seldovia. Family friends used to have a cabin there. On my Father’s days off, we’d jump in the 182, fly down there. There’d be a pick up truck at the airstrip. Unlocked, keys in the ash tray. Unload, drive to their cabin, keys under the stairs (used to be an old shipwreck by the bridge years ago. Certain it’s gone by now). You’d then unpack, grab the keys to the boat and go deep sea fishing.
If you think seeing bears was cool. Try watching whales breach within 50 feet of your boat!!
This entire series has been reliving my childhood, 40 years later Thank you so much Matt.
Just passed my Private Pilot checkride, AND Matt releases a new video! This day couldn’t get better!
That’s awesome, congrats!
Matt Guthmiller thank you! Love your videos
Luke Cole Do you own a plane?
Congratulations! Safety First!
le monke I wish
This looks like a seriously fun trip. I love small rural communities.
Alaska is beautiful!!! When I was 10(1965) , we took a trip up the Alcan Highway from Seattle to Fairbanks. Those days the highway was mostly unpaved. The scenery was breathtaking, the word my Mom said the whole ride. We had a cousin, at the time he was 86, who lived in Fairbanks during the summers. He was one of the first pioneers, Bob Bloom. The history is fascinating! I would love to visit Alaska again....
The back seat of that Bonanza looks like you crashed into a 7-11.
Nice shot of wingtip vortices at 14:18. And well done videography, b-roll takes lots of extra landings and more time than many people realize.
Such a great video. Production values seem to go up all the time - those landing and takeoff shots over the town were gorgeous.
Another great video. A little more footage your visit to Seldovia would have been fun.
The last few episodes have included an appreciative comment about the USA, but this 63 year old curmudgeon is going to risk of sounding like a sap and say there was something nice about the three of you singing “God Bless America.” You surely want to keep your day jobs, but it was sweet nonetheless and it reflects an appreciation for what you have.
Thank you so much for sharing your adventures. Take care and may you have better than forecast tailwinds.
Hey Matt, you should name your channel "the Flying Food Channel". "Every Pilot's Guide to Junk Food in the Cockpit." As a life long corporate pilot (now retired), every morning flight included a discussion of, "where ya wanna eat lunch today?" WILL FLY FOR FOOD.
Stinson guy.
The Iditarod has started in downtown Anchorage since 1983. However, Anchorage is actually a ceremonial start where the largest audience is available, and the eleven-mile run through Anchorage is not competitive. The competition begins the following day in Willow, which is about seventy miles north of Anchorage. Typically, the race begins on the frozen surface of Willow Lake. The historic Iditarod Trail, however, does begin in Seward.
Contrary to popular belief, the Iditarod was not organized to celebrate the renowned 1925 serum run from Seward to Nome. It was organized by Dorothy Page and Joe and Vi Redington to preserve and celebrate the sled dog culture and Alaskan huskies, which were being phased out of existence by the introduction of snowmobiles in Alaska.
So beautiful seeing the Bonanza take off on that dirt strip!
Ok Hopper, a little disappointed you chose not to share the dancing... LOL!
Thanks for the view of the towns and area to which I plan to move, though Seward, Seldovia, and much to the East.
I wish you'd have gone back to home, and really flown around The Kenai in order to get a good view of the layout.
Thanks also for showing the tab on the Go Juice, THAT is a main part of real world aspects of flying.
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
What a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing your adventure in Alaska with all of us.
Incredible view at 12:20
It was awesome getting a chance to meet and chat with you and Adrian at Manassas the other day, Matt. Great vid, as always. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Mike, nice meeting you as well!
My bucket list. To ride with Matt. I'm no one just an avg joe. Sure would be an awesome action item
Beautiful country. It was nice to see Brittany. Matt you have a lot to catch up it’s already February looking forward to to the rest.
Love the channel and really appreciate the work you put into the vids. Would also love to know a little more about what we are flying over. Give us a sense of what we are seeing, i.e. the names of the mountain ranges and valleys, interesting things about the communities you fly into, throw in a little history on occasion. Showing us your countless takeoffs and landings and hearing ATC is great, but try taking your channel to a higher level! Do that and your subscriber base will grow, and your efforts will pay off for you.
That's some secret Alaska has, that stunning scenery.
lol man, I been binge watching all weekend lol. Excited to call the school tomorrow.
Matt,
I started getting my Pilots License when I was in high school worked on it more when I was in the Navy, was supposed to solo September 13th 2001.
Obviously that didn't happen.
Recently I started flying again and am getting it finished up.
I've been really enjoying your videos the last couple of months.
Stay awesome man, this is flying I have always dreamed about doing.
I may even wind up driving a V tail!
Another change of dreams there Nick? You change your dreams like I swap my underwear. Well let's just hope you're a better pilot than you are a sailor. So when is your Spencer going up for sale? I'll give you $500 bucks for her. My buddy is looking for an auto pilot, we'll just chainsaw the rest.
Seldovia - what an approach!!. Quality video. Thanks again
Looks like you got to experience Anchorage's first-ever 90 degree day on July 4 2019. I visited there just a few days after that, it was still really warm and the only bear I saw during my trip was one running along the freeway northeast of Anchorage at about 2AM.
You miss out on so much beauty and scenery by flying to Seward from South Anchorage. The Seward Highway is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Especially to Homer.
Don’t know about the dears but that singing really startled me
Thanks for taking us along .
Great video as always Matt! Meteorologist here and AvGeek. Yeah smoke can eventually be the formation basis for clouds.
thumbnail for the video is great. Lighting with bright white light at the nose and red at the tail of the plane
Once again, many memories from places I’ve been. 👍👍👍🛩
love that engine roar!!
Man I wish they had these glass cockpits when I was flying LOL.....they do everything except make the coffee!
Beautiful breathtaking images, well done!
Love these videos!! Great music selections for the background as well!
Beautiful scenery. Thanks.
Wondering if you have your electric pitch trim looked at yet? Sounds if it's trimming in one direction only, then the limit switches may be jammed for runaway protection for pitch up.
4th of July? and this was posted almost 7 months later? crazy
ive been waiting for the plastic explanation for like 4 videos.. thank you!
Such a great video. Really loved the wing camera. Love it when you swerve onto the runway with the motor all ready going full blast. Just found your channel, looking forward to seeing your other videos.
Nice sunsets
July! Come on!!!!!!!
Hey Matt, I've been watching your videos for over a year and I still don't know your girlfriend's name. I know Owen's name, and he's a great aviation buddy to have along. Your girlfriend seems very sweet. You both look like a great couple! Keep up the great videos!
Awesome videos! I live in between Palmer and Wasilla AK, I see planes everywhere and wonder what it looks like from the sky
Matt, You definitely need to get a spot on the Food Channel ! Ha!
It seriously never gets old watching how softly your nose wheel touches down.
CDV (Cordova "Mudhole" Smith) was always a cool airport to fly in to until the Copper River washed out the highway to the glacier viewpoint
The image at 14:31 is amazing.
Beautiful!!!
Ha! You get a thumbs just for knowing the words to God Bless America!
I can't physically fly at the moment (just don't have the money or time right now but I really do wan't to get my license soon) but man this also kinda motivate me to get a bit more into flight simming at least.
I subscribed to your channel I love your flying and I love your Bonanza I love to fly to but I'm not a pilot
OH THOSE VORTICES OH THEY DO MAGIC THINGS
nice singing GB America!
I get the plastic sheet on the knob trick, but you might wanna edit that out before some do-gooder with too much free time dimes you out for it...
You are literally soooo lucky to have the money and time to do this. Most people only get a chance to free fly once a month at most
I'm guessing you can try the bonanza at 1000 ft runway 🤣
Liked the gimmeabreak at 2200👍
Beautiful video Matt😃. Thanks 🙏🏻
Matt, your videos are great. Thanks. Do you have to pay landing fees at some of the fields?
This makes me want to live in Alaska
Awesome scenery! Is it a requirement for pilots (and crew) to eat all the time? I've seen pilots snacking while on the way to eat, and none are over weight. What's up with that? Thanks for another great video, Matt!
This should be called the food channel.
I think that Campbell Airstrip is a land management airport.
Beautiful, thank you so much, be safe ,,,
The music great happy 4th just a little late/early
Great flying, cool editing.
Hey, you guys sing good👌
*Video uploaded Feb 1*
"So it's July 4th"
Why is this series so delayed? XD
I mean, I love the high-quality videos and understand that it takes forever to edit all of this together.
Because they fly around and film it and have fun in the warm months and then they produce the epic videos in winter
@@TeddyBearGaming999 Yeah but he was flying around the Bahamas a little bit ago and I want to see that video!
My thoughts also
i was like god damn
Timing and editing is part of it, but some RUclipsrs also like to space out their videos so they can be earning a consistent amount off of the revenue from the videos. July until now isn't the worst I've seen. There's a unicyclist named Ed who went around the world and is just releasing videos from 2018 now. There was really no way for him to edit his journey on the road.
Hi from NORWAY👍😃. Nice video.
Now on my bucket list! Very cool place to fly. Av gas looks expensive. Is it expensive everywhere and availability good?
What a amazing place!!!! 😍
You Macguyver'd the hell outta that autopilot switch!
Might be a short in that system somewhere.
No shots of the race??
So do Alaskans just light off a volcano instead of fireworks on the 4th?
Clean the wing camera lens next time please. Make it part of your preflight check. :)
Magic!
Thanks for the ride ... It's last July in February ... ask me if I care ... it's worth the wait Bonanza 367 Hotel Papa!
Your girlfriend Rachel, did not see too happy with your female friend on the controls:). Great video.
Darkness in July is hard to comeby , must be 3am when you returned to Anchorage lol
I've been in a lot of single and twin engine aircraft
Hi Matt. One of the things I noticed is that in your videos you cruise above 10000 feet on occasion. I know that the rule is that you'rem not supposed to cruse above 10000 feet for more than 30 minutes without oxygen. I don't remember for sure but I thought that you cruised at 11000 or 12000 for an extended period of time when you crossed the Atlantic in the Cessna 210. I was wondering if laws are different for Denmark or if they don't apply in international airspace or something like that. Although I suppose even if there is an international law about that it's not like it could be enforced in that situation. I'm a student pilot and I was wondering what the details were on that as I will likely be flying across international borders often. I fly out of EBCI, in Belgium where the French border is 15 minutes away at 90kts and the channel is about an hour. I also wanted to let you know that your videos have always been fun and inspiring to me, and they make me want to fly every time I watch one. Keep up the good work and thank you!
In the US, you can fly up to 12,500 without oxygen, or above 12,500 but below 15,000 for a maximum of 30 minutes without oxygen. Above 15,000 all passengers must use supplemental oxygen continuously.
the 10,000 feet rule you may be thinking of is the FAA recommendation that you use oxygen above 10,000 feet AT NIGHT. and it is only a recommendation, not a law. Im not sure about any international laws though lol, that would be interesting to know tho because I find it hard to find international aviation laws.
This seems odd to me. I commonly do day hikes and short backpacking trips at 11,000 feet. I only live at about 5000'.
ZE0XE0 yeah I’m sure the FAA kinda increased the numbers to ensure safety cuz I’m sure if u stayed at 12,500 for longer than 30 mins you wouldn’t immediately pass out, but I’m sure you would eventually feel side effects
@@ZE0XE0 If I'm not mistaken, most people live under 1000', and many live under 500', so you may be more acclimated to high altitudes already just by living as high as you do. I'm not sure how much difference it makes, though.
Seward, Homer, and Seldovia are Islands?
The upside is that if he was eaten by a bear we could have seen it in 1440!
2160p*
@@rebelyell22 IDK why you are getting 2160p. The max I can see is 1440.
*Matt worrying about getting eaten by bears for 16 minutes and 42 seconds*
Did you pick up any “friends “ (mosquitoes), while in Alaska? Nice flight. See ya on the next one.🛩
I think that the TFR was for more than just smoke.
how do you pay for all of this maintenance ,fuel and just fly around and enjoy the life?
Not from these RUclips videos, that’s for sure.
Was that fuel expensive? Worked out to $2.58 pet litre and that's what I pay here and think it is so.
Matt, when r u going to bring your parents to flying?
Hey Matt, I’ve got a question. Have you ever heard of any computer issues (motherboard failures, processor issues, ect...) in electronic flight displays and gps/radios? And what is the certifications on electric instruments? I can’t find much on the internet. Thanks!
Epic video as always matt
Oh it's July!!! For a minute I thought Global Worming might have a shred of truth to it. LOL Thanks Matt....
Matt as you know many aviators started with RC aircraft. Unfortunately the FAA's new proposed rules would devastate the RC aviation community. If you are unfamiliar please google "EAA Proposed Remote ID". Please help the RC aviation community and spread the word with other aviators. We need your help. Thank you and as always, great video !!
Hey Matt, did you always have that tail beacon or is it new? Super visible, but don’t you find it distractingly? Great series!
I'll bet that's his ADS-B installation.
Awesome vid I love to watch you
4:20. I've always wondered what those are for. Now I know :-)
I keep trying to wipe my screen to clear off the fuzzy spot....
Psh, I am watching on a 90" Screen, that "Spot" is nearly 3 frikken feet on my screen, thought I was going to have to get the windex haha.
I did pull out the Windex for this video, but it was purely a coincidence (I hadn't cleaned the screen for about 2 years, and it was a dirty used monitor). This just happened to be the video that I got tired of looking through dirt at.
Absolutely superb :)
If you ever got the kind of money would you ever ditch the bonanza and fly a jet plane
So... about this dancing. Where is the video on that??
