I feel like this wouldn't actually classify as doublespeak. He is simply not answering their questions. If he was actually double speaking, he would answer the questions but be very convoluted in his responses.
I was in public relations for 25 years and this is what we would train people to do. The only reason it is not working here is because the whole story is about him using doublespeak. He just stays on his talking points and says what he wants to say. In traditional news as it was right through the 1990s and into the early 2000s the editors would look for grabs or soundbites that they could throw into the story and if you only gave them what you wanted to say, that is all they would have. This is one of the only instances I have ever seen where the media actually call out the politician for doing it. Normally they will just rewrite their story to work around the sound bite.
