@whatafag21 Great question. in TM, the mind completely settles down to the silent source of thought. When you learn, you need a teacher because otherwise you'd have to constantly be figuring out what to do next and whether you're doing it right - your mind can't settle down to silence if you're thinking like that. Once you know how to do it, then you meditate on your own. Sort of like learning to drive (but easier) - you're with the instructor at first but then you can be on your own.
Through a disciple of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi I got to know more about transcendental meditation during my visit to Kumbh Mela in 2019. Can understand how Beatles found bliss during their stay with the Maharishi
"The mind's natural instinct is for greater happiness" - this seems to be much different to Eckhart Tolle's teachings of how dysfunctional the mind is, and his solution to drop mind-made thinking as a solution.
@Yeaahright When you learn TM, your personal instructor will make sure that you have the correct mantra and are using it correctly. So if you've already learned TM, then go to your local TM center and ask to have your meditation checked.
We live in a world where billions of humans live in misery while hundreds of billions of other animals are being slaughtered every year. And yet probably the only way to change all that is to be aware of all the suffering, and still be able to remain happy and "blissful" in order to spread the awareness and empathy instead of misery. We have a long way to go.
@MrSF0011 Learn the TM technique. If you already did then my advice is to get a checking of your meditation. The thoughts are natural. In TM you don't TRY to quiet down your thoughts. You don't TRY anything. You don't TRY to meditate either. Thoughts happen, it's a natural part of the process. When you TRY you're not meditating.
@BradBrassman Definitely yes. Transcendental Meditation takes the mind beyond thought, lets it settle down completely. If you have to be constantly thinking about what to do and whether you're doing it correctly, then your mind can't settle down and you won't transcend. So when you first learn, you need a trained teacher who can make sure you're meditating correctly and having good experiences.

@MrHarrydash The mantra needs to have two important properties: First, it has to allow your mind to settle down to silence, to the source of thought. Second, it has to be suited to your individual physiology and psychology. TM teachers are trained to choose the correct mantra for each person, and the mantras are from an age-old tradition. Also, you need to learn how to use the mantra properly. Yes, it's very simple to practice TM, but it takes proper training to be able to teach it to everyone.
I understand how using a mantra skilfully can unfold within us a state of blissfully experienced self absorption (jnana) Concentration is crucial on the path but is it not insight that leads to breakthrough and nothing else? Please forgive me. I am sure that i am confused in my understanding.
The mantras are from printed lists based on age and gender which have been changed throughout the decades so describing them as chosen from an age-old tradition by trained teachers can be misinterpreted to mean more than it does.
