That is one super cool looking instrument. I love the shape. It reminds me of a traditional Greek lyre. I'm wondering if you could change the bridge and put a straight piece of wood across the body somewhat diagonally so the strings have a more "correct" length pattern. That would probably be better than that s-shaped bridge they used. Regardless... I'm anxious to see what you make out of it.
I wanted to buy this lyre, mostly because it looks like it can be played from both sides, but having the strings untuneable and breaking is a no-no, so I'll probably get a different one. Thank you for the video.
Wow this one is really beautiful! It seems the extra 3 strings from the 16 string would be nice. I want a chromatic lyre but they are way out of my budget. What is your favorite small harp? Are they easier to tune with levers?
My favorite small harp on a budget is the Aklot: amzn.to/3LiKXwo but that's only 15 strings and no levers. You might enjoy the Fireside Harp kits, they are 22 strings and you can get them put together with levers on. The levers do not make it easier to tune exactly; the harp is still tuned with tuning pins almost exactly like the lyre. But the levers do help with accidentals; for instance if a song calls for F#s rather than Fs, you can just flip the lever instead of re-tuning. Hope that makes sense!
@@MusicalMollyKhan it does. Thank you. I would rather have the levers than tune each time a play in another key. Ha. Being a pianist and organist I’m use to ease of key changing. Thanks again.
I wish I had seen this before I purchased this lyre. My experience was like yours, except my first one broke at the top after a week. The replacement-==bottom string has a buzz, top string broke before coming to pitch and I was very very careful with it, I'm used to tuning lap harps. I need to get it back out of the box, I thought I might remove the bottom string and downtune all the strings a few steps. I just got so aggravated with it I haven't been using it.
Thank you for the insightful tips! I love the shape of this lyre for a classical look. I am trying to decide between a 10 string and a 19.. what would you recommend? I figure a 19 is better for more complex songs
I'm thinking of getting this lyre and changing to nylon strings, do you think it would be a good lyre for this project? How wide is the spacing between the stings? Thanks
Hello there, I'm looking forward learning harp so before that I'm interested in getting in to lyre so could you pls tell me how many strings of lyre should i purchase which would help in learning harp
I would like to buy one like the even bridge and even string, could you please tell me where I can get one of these also if you could let me know what is the brand name. Thank you Amy
You are awfully excited for this sort of odd tuning lyre. I am not an expert in music, but sure I would be frustrated if I had to tune this lyre by myself. I checked alibaba express yesterday for lyre, but it was 1/4 of the price of normal prices so I was little bit suspicious of the quality, but when I was watching the beginning of your video, I was excited that alibaba express do after all give a nice harp. But after hearing the tune, I prefer not to buy it there.
That's totally fair - I think it would be difficult to use as a standard lyre. But I did a special tuning on it with a unique string set that makes it sing 😊 You can see that video here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/k8W8U8Fy3IY/видео.html
It has a nice shape and an ok tone and, crucially, all the strings are accessible from both sides (a lot of budget lyres available don’t have this) but the palm-tree design is something I’d expect to see on a cheap ukulele and the word ‘music’ engraved across the middle is just ghastly. I know it’s just aesthetics, but I find it hard to treat it seriously as a musical instrument.
I loved another beautiful lyre, but I had to divorce her. JK That really is a beautiful instrument. Can't wait to hear you play it. But it sounds like someone else was asking you if they could play it.
You have the greatest smile. It makes me happy just to listen to you. :) And I love your little baby's noises in the background.
Glad it was helpful 😊

I think that's a fantastic idea! It shouldn't be too hard to make a replacement bridge. It works really well for what I'm doing though haha 😅
The bridge's harmonic curve is also incorrect--it needs to be inverted from the way it's designed now, plus tilted downward a little.
I love this! I have a 19 string lyre similar to this! Mine has a similar shape to the 16 string one. Absolutely beautiful sound!
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy it 😊

I just bought the 16 string from Aklot! I'm super excited to receive him
Oh I hope you love it! It's such a lovely lyre 😊
@@MusicalMollyKhan do you have metal or silk stings on yours?
@@reilly7770 Mine are metal :D
Mee too, 16 strings
I love her bubbly personality, also great info on the video. You got a new sub!
Aww thank you! Welcome 😊

Oh no, I love this shape and I saw one that’s pretty much just like this one, but im afraid to buy it bc I dont want its strings to break 😭😭
Aww 😩 I think maybe you could tune it a few steps lower than it's meant and be okay? Or perhaps buy thinner gauge strings for the upper notes.
Interesting...so when you restring, you need to know the gauge of each string and I wonder if they offer a set of strings particularly for this Lyra.
I haven't seen one, but sometimes contacting those companies is really helpful! 😊

Oh no! I'm planning to tune mine pentatonically with lots of repeating notes - I'm hoping that will help!
Your cute as a bug in a rug! That's pretty cute🤣. And thank you for letting us be with you for the unboxing of your new lyre.
Everytime you mention physics two things come to mind:
1. Facts
2. Physics teachers probably make great musicians and vice versa
Haha, I think that's true! 😊

Yes a 19 you can definitely do a lot more with, that’s what we’re looking for.
I just bought this exact lyre off a person via FB Buy n Sell site for $40! lol Will be fun to mess around on, and see if I want a serious one.
I'm thinking of getting this lyre and changing to nylon strings, do you think it would be a good lyre for this project? How wide is the spacing between the stings? Thanks
I think that would be such a fun project! I'm not sure of the exact spacing, but it's much closer than a typical harp.
I’m glad you made this vid because there are too many liars when it comes to lyres!

@@MusicalMollyKhan You can color code Fs and Cs withe red and blue magic markers. Rub a wax candle lightly over the strings to keep the colors on.
ciao u
ho una lira di 19 corde, vorrei imparare!!.. potresti aiutarmi? qualche consiglio magari un manuale ?? grazie
This sounds like an ad about what lyre not to buy.
Oh my God the subtitles in French are just crazy 😱😂but your video is great !
Haha that's too bad! I hope RUclips improves those sometime soon 😊
