just one suggestion - if you don't have one of these roller tools, I have found that pastry rollers in the kitchen work well also. I have some marble rolling pins that get more use in my leather work than in my kitchen.
Excellent video! Excellent template! Thanks Aaron. I've made a few of these now and love the design. By the way, those metal rollers are still available from Ivan Leathercraft, Tandy's original supplier.
@@makersleathersupply1220 one of things I never liked about the Tandy/Ivan ones was that tiny, almost invisible, flecks of metal would come off them, and when using them on natural veg tan, the metal particles would react with the leather and you'd end up with little blue spots showing up. I'm sure your toolmaker uses better quality material!
Wow man, your right close to the microphone of your camera, i have dropped the volume on my laptop. You are absolutely yelling and its bursting inside my head. Thanks a lot. I really appreciate that you go through the entire process. Your discussion is meaningful and real. I prefer the way you do this to the edited, speeded up, videos. Really good work. Thank you. I do think you could keep stitching and talking on camera without concern for length or time. You know, we all have speed control and can skip and fast forward any time.
Thank you for the video! I’m just starting out. My husband has his grandfathers wallet and I want to make a replica so he can still feel like he’s got grandpa with him, but grandpa’s wallet can go in a case so it doesn’t fall apart. I’ll head over to your website get my supplies. Also; Tyvek! brilliant!
A pro tip for people new to templates: You can avoid cracking templates by simply using a silver pen and marking the position of the holes. Strike them first, place the template back over the hole positions then make your cuts. If you're iffy on using black Tyvek along the backsides of the card slots, there are clear plastic roper kit sleeves available at leather shops. Additionally, to create uniform bonds in your leather it is better to 'rough' your edges before applying the glue. This will prevent any kind of separation if the product comes into contact with water or sweat. Even though I personally disdain using a leather gouge, if you decide to do it, make your gouge marks at the very beginning when you make your sectional cuts. That will save you the heartbreak if you flub the gouges later. Additionally, it will allow you to dye the gouge lines giving the product a more uniform appearance. Happy crafting everyone!
I got the 9 card template from Tandy under the Pro line. I have about 5 other of Aaron's templates. My main issue with this trifold set is even using the suggested weight leathers, I had to add an inch to the outer back and 5/8" to the divider piece to allow it to close at all with a couple bills in the currency pocket. The differing heights of the back and divider are good in design but I found to be a bit impractical allowing the top edge of the back to wear quickly. In all, I've been very happy with the Maker's templates but this one needed a bit of modification to suit my needs.
Just got the templates, but will be machine sewing. Will I simply stitch through just the one outer layer across the top and where the curves are cut out at the bottom in order to have the same stitching all the way around. Loved the video.
Just found your channel, also just spent almost $200 on an elephant hide wallet an am not happy with it think i'm going to make one with your stuff. Thanks.
Great video! I wonder what is the purpose of having the side card pocket leather folded in half and not just a single piece like the middle. The finished product has those pieces sewn on all 4 sizes so why add more thickness?
I jumped the gun and punched my holes in the outside perimeter before i glued my inside down. Would it be easier to use my stitching chisels thru the existing holes straight down thru the inside? Or should i use my awl and punch the holes individually?
It's a good pattern, except I never personally cared for making (or using) wallets where the card slots just have a glued fabric divider. I'd rather make a slightly thicker wallet with each pocket it's own sewn layer, it would be nice to see a variation. Also a variation with rounded corners would be slick. Great videos and patterns!
I don't round template corners often because it's easier to cut them square and then round them at once after assembly. Also, I've offered many folks the challenge with the tape and tyvek design... if you use the right materials and one of them fails, I'll buy that wallet and replace it too.
Thank you for making such detailed videos! One question. Do you have any tips for sewing the folds when sewing the back to the inside while using a sewing machine? Seems like that would be awkward on a flat bed machine.
I understand the need for brevity but I was hoping to watch you do the hand-sewing. I'm 79 and getting back to leather after doing some harnessmaking in the 1980s. I never tried hand-sewing a wallet because the thread I had seemed too large. What can you tell me about thread and needle size for hand-sewing wallets and other similar sized leathers? Thank you for any help, and thanks for your service!
Hey Aaron - just got this template for Christmas and am eager to try and make a wallet. I'm curious about how you finish the hand stitching, particularly on the three card slot interior pieces.
@@makersleathersupply1220 I usually do that with a saddle stitch but learned to run the needle through the leather and knot it. It seems that you don't do that - is it because of the thickness of the leather? Anyhow, thanks for the response. Love your tutorials.
Aaron, finished up my Roper Wallet using the Makers Template, and it turned out fantastic. Do you or have you considered making a template for a I-Phone case with magnetic folding snap. It has credit cards on 1 side, maybe 4 slots, and a i_phone rubber boot is glued to a piece on the other side with a cash pocket underneath. I made a paper template and made one but it sure would nice to save the time cutting with a template, and it would be an item in high demand. I can send you a pic to your e-mail if you want to get an idea of what I am talking about. Let me know.
Aaron, what is the make of contact glue you’re using, it doesn’t look like Barges? Also, what have you found as the best way to sharpen the edge bevelers?
It is our brand of contact cement. Made for us by a company in St Louis. On edgers, I generally use the edge of a piece of leather with polishing compound to keep them stropped. I don't usually need to sharpen them unless the blade has been damaged.
Is it necessary to sew the folded side of each outside piece, is that stitch just for eye appeal? Seems like you could glue inside that fold and roll it down tight. ??
Hi Aaron! What can I use instead of Tyvek? I live in Italy, can't find it in my country and I tried on your website but the shipping cost is too high.. Thank you! Great work as always!
Tyvek is just a brand owned by Dupont. It's primarily known for house wrap. A water barrier before applying siding. Check locally what they use for house wrap and see if they sell it in narrow rolls. I'm sure they use something that's the same or similar for construction there.
