    Notes:
    • Ikhlas (sincerity) = intention with no blemishes / impurities. Like pure unpolluted milk.
    • Shirk in actions is where intentions are polluted because our intentions are shared / partnered with something else.
    • If Allah (swt) is the only intention, then there are no blemishes / pollutants in the intention.
    • It is acknowledged and understood that motivation is what drives people and that other motivations are at play whilst trying to get closer to Allah (swt). These other motivations can be good or bad. Eg of a good ulterior motivation, is carrying out voluntary fasts while intending to also lose weight. To do something purely for the sake of Allah (swt) takes a lot of love of Allah (swt), practice and total separation from the world.
    • It is acknowledged and understood that motivation towards other intentions for worldly benefit also makes it easier for us to carry out an act to get closer to Allah (swt).
    • If you have any additional motivation to lighten the burden of getting closer to Allah (swt), then your ikhlas is not pure.
    • Pure ikhlas is critical because Allah (swt) is The One, with absolutely no partners who does not need any partners and is above all creation.
    • Pure Ikhlas and purity in the heart is so difficult to come by and requires so much hard work in achieving it, yet a moment of it in your life can be enough for salvation.
    • This is why ikhlas has to be learnt in the company of those who have it. It takes a very long time to learn pure ikhlas. Additionally, to achieve ikhlas the following are required;
    o Absolute love for Allah (swt).
    o Entire life focus (to the point of spiritual intoxication) is the akhira.
    o Complete removal of the love of the world; to the point where it’s like the value for sand and gold are the same.
