The really fundamental question is how does he manage to be wrong even twice a day, when if he kept his mouth shut he would at least be right twice a day, like the proverbial broken clock. 6 new Type 45 destroyers were tied up in Portsmouth in 2017, because the cooling systems didn’t work in anything but freezing cold sea water. He is probably including them, because they are being repaired one by one, up until at least 2028. He’ll also include the 2 faulty aircraft carriers that are tied up and under repairs, again !
Currently, HMS Daring, HMS Dragon and HMS Defender are all at various stages of the Power Improvement Project (PIP) - part of the PIP upgrades include new radars, computers, software, weapons and damage control not just new engines.
The PIP work has been brought forward and instead of doing one ship at a time (hence the 2028 timeline) they are doing 2 while working on another so we could have 2 more finished in 2024/25 and undergoing sea trails.
The other 3 ships have completed all the upgrades.
But all 6 are still missing their sea-to-land attack missile systems (it should have been the sea-based tomahawk cruise missile system) because they were never fitted due to cost-cutting.
I do not fancy an 8km walk to see what the aircraft carriers are up to.
The cheapest bid is rarely the best bid. The MOD used to have its own procurement engineers who went through the bids and said how crap they where.

@@DerekHarrison-ue9vv it's not uncommon for the civilian control of the military to be in the hands of someone outside of the military. Even the current US defence secretary had to officially resign from the military first before assuming office. This is to make sure the military, the most powerful organisation in a country that has authority to wield violence, doesn't go rogue. But I agree that Shapps might not be the best fit nonetheless.

During the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum, UKGov promised if Scotland voted no,
15 new warships would be built on the Clyde ....Scotland voted no and they then downgraded their own pledge to 7.... 53% less.
All I remember is the english laughing their holes off at how easy it was to fool the dozy Scottish alcoholics. The worst part of it was that it was true. The most shameful event in Scottish history.
Firstly, it was a pledge of 13 Type 26 frigates. The government then scrapped 5 of those frigates and reduced the order to 8 (not 7), but then ordered batch of a different design, 5 Type 31 frigates. So the total number of hulls being constructed has actually stayed the same - well grown since then, there were 24 built, under construction, or to be built in Scotland.

I remember Mr Cameron fighting tooth and nail in the first weeks of his premiership to CANCEL the building of aircraft carriers. He did however manage to cancel the airplanes to go on them, then have to reorder (at a premium of course) those same airplanes
Regarding the hospital reference, this is exactly what came to mind the second I heard it.
To put it simply, for the benefit of Mr Shapps, concept design is a "stage" of the design process.

I’m no fan of Shapps, but those 6 multi-role ships are being built for the Royal Marines. They are specifically designed to deliver Royal Marine Commandos in amphibious assaults.

Construction projects like this are divided up into two main phases: Concept & Assessment and Design & Manufacture. So ships like the Type 26, Type 31 and Dreadnought Class are in the Design & Manufacture, so that's 17 ships being built. The remaining vessels are the Marine Assault Ships and AUKUS subs, currently in Concept & Assessment (differing ideas are being tested before a productionised design is created).
They’re going to build warships of good English oak just like HMS Victory.
6 of these ships were promised to be built on the clyde just before the referendum in 2014

Ships require people, so with between 6 & 28 new ships what are the plans to increase the people in the armed forces ?
The 6 multi-role ships will replace 6 existing ships so I’d imagine the same personnel will take over the new ones. The other 22 will probably also be replacements as opposed to additional. HMS Cardiff mentioned in the video us one of 8 type 26 frigates that will replace 8 existing type 23 frigates.
Armed forces personel have been going down, few years ago it was near 100k now it's closer to 75k.
not to mention mass rejection of people who WANT to join.

What is even more important than this, is that when even one is built, that it works!
Maybe so many ships are sitting in ports because they are only empty shells, trying to fool the enemy into thinking we still have a huge navy, just like the allies did during WW2, but they were a lot smarter than the eejits we have now.

We are already committed to Type 26 and Type 31 Frigates (to replace ageing Type 23), 2 more Astute attack subs (total of 7) and 3 Dreadnought class subs to replace 4 Vanguard.....so he cant be announcing many more.....
As for 2.5% of GDP, not only are the figures debateable, but GDP is down at least £100Bn since Brexit, so not as much spending as they claim.

Actually the government promised to build 108 new ships. That is if you count the announcements of new ships by Corrine Stockheath, Michael Green, and Sebastian Fox as well as the announcement from Grant Schnapps.

"Concept Design" as I understand it is exactly what it says. It takes a proposal to a stage where it can be assessed for its cost benefit, whether the RoI is justified and in the case of a long term project, like a warship, whether the need for it to be built still exists.
Over centuries hundreds of warship designs have got that far and no further.
Also, this government pulled the rug from under HS2 that was beyond the concept design stage
