  • Star of the County Down, a very well known Irish tune.
I went along to a local car boot sale this morning and saw an old Generation C whistle on one of the stalls. When I asked the seller how much he wanted for it he said just £1. Of course I snapped it up there and then. It's not that I needed another Generation whistle, I have a case full of them but it had the line running up the mouthpiece which lets you know it was made before 1982 which many people, including me, believe are the best Generation whistles so I wasn't going to leave it where it was. It looked like it had been played a lot over the years judging by the patina and the amount of teeth marks on the mouthpiece so I thought it must be a nice instrument to make somebody want to pick it up and play. I got it home and dunked it in "Miltons Fluid" to sterilise it, gave it a play and I thought it sounded great so I very quickly programmed a well known easy tune into "Chordpulse"and recorded a short snippet.
I can't think of a better way to spend £1 on a Sunday morning.

Hi Lugro, I hope you are well. I didn't really need another whistle, I've got a case full of them, but when I saw this for sale at a car boot sale for only £1 it was too much of a bargain to leave it behind.

Hi Cal, I think those old Generation whistles are wonderful instruments. If you look at footage of bands like "The Dubliners" From the 60s & 70s then it was always a Generation whistle the top players played back then. When they changed the manufacturing process in the 80s the quality of them was never consistent. You could be lucky and get a good one but often they were not. I've got quite a few of the old ones, mainly from Ebay. so I didn't really need this one but at £1 I couldn't resist a bargain.

You did well to buy this Generation for only £1. Something similar happened to me about a year and a half ago, I went into a music shop and in a display case I saw several Generation tin whistles, they all seemed modern but I could see one that was a little bigger than the others and had a line along the mouthpiece. I asked the shopkeeper if he could show it to me, he said yes but without playing it, then he told me it was a leftover from the warehouse and that if I was interested he would charge me €5, considering that it was a vintage model in Bb but new and never played and that it was made of brass, I bought it even though I already had one of the same brand and tone but modern and nickel-plated. I was happy because both sound very good but they sound a little different then, after removing the glued mouthpieces (a very delicate operation due to the fragility of the mouthpieces) and after performing the tweak they sounded even better.

Hi Giorgio, you were so lucky to find a Generation whistle with the line on the mouthpiece that had never been played, when you think it's over forty years ago that Generation changed their manufacturing process and the mouthpiece became smooth the chances of that happening must be almost as slim as winning the lottery. I first started searching for older Generation whistles a few years ago when I heard about Jerry Freeman tweaking new Generation whistles to re-create the vintage voice. I thought I'd search for the real thing. I regularly looked on Ebay and now have all the available keys except the high G that are simply too small for my fingers.

Hi chaw, here in England car boot sales are very popular. You never know what you might find when you look around. While I was there last Sunday I also found a very nice padded guitar gig bag that would probably cost about £30 to buy new and got it for £2.50. The gig bag I keep my Harley Benton guitar in had got very worn out so that was another fantastic bargain.

Hi Graham, when I hit 58 years old, (hence the channel name) I made a sort of "Bucket List" of things to do before I hit the big six zero. One of the things on the list was to learn to play another instrument. The whistle was what I went for. It's easy enough to get a simple tune from a whistle because they only play a major scale. There are of course some fantastic players around who do things on a whistle that I could only dream of, but it is a good fun little instrument.

Hi Graham, I don't know if you already knew but Generation make a whistle specially designed for pipers. It's called "The Elfsong Enchanteress" They have the same fingering as a highland bagpipe so you would instantly be able to play it. I know very little about the highland pipes but I believe they are in the key of Bb. The Generation whistle with bagpipe fingering plays in the key of D. Here's a link to a post by the lady who designed it.

I was very temped to get one but I thought it would be quite a learning curve for me to play it. If you ever fancy a whistle then it could be the perfect one for you.
