  • As part of the Master's Degree in Yoga Studies Program at Loyola Marymount University, students travel to India to experience Yoga's motherland first-hand and to study Jainism. One student was particularly impressed by the Jain religion and what it has to offer all people, Jain or non-Jain. This is her story.

Thank you for this lovely video. I discovered Jainism in early 2014, while I was transitioning to veganism, and I have been an aspiring follower ever since. Unfortunately, the Jain Center is 3 1/2 hours away from my house, but there are many excellent resources now online to learn about all aspects of Jainism, and I have even become friends with several Jains in India and elsewhere through Facebook and Twitter. iTunes also has a good selection of Jain devotional music (which is how I memorized the Navkar Mantra). I would love to see Jainism spread in the west. Thank you again!

Jainism&Hinduism r the only answer to the Waring world with only Vegitarianism&Non violence at its center, because the type of food we all eat goes to our brain & body wich mostly goes in our behavior.
Most of western,Middle east, far east cultures promote Non-vegitarian food wich has direct connection to vast varities of crimes & wars.

Well done Allison! Jainism would resonate with many progressive and ethically aware westerners (vegans, animal/nature lovers, etc.), but unfortunately very few know about it. That's why I think it should be actively promoted in Europe and America. And as one of the speakers said, Jainism has answers to many modern and future problems that we are facing today.

Denis La Minaccia, you make such an important point. My lifelong fascination with religion has led to what I consider an above average understanding of the world's different beliefs & practices. Yet, I hadn't consciously heard of Jainism before this morning. As a vegan scientist whose career has been suffered extensively due to my beliefs I'm truly inspired to learn more and share this message!

@@juanesteban8827 Jainism is an atheist religion, they worship Tirthankars who attained salvation, it works on karma concept.. Karma is nothing but energy attached to your soul, when you do bad karma, your soul energy goes down and gets binded by karma. So jains follow rigorous fasting as way to burn karma... Whenever you do fasting, yoga, pranayam ur repressed emotions from subconscious mind comes up, you experinece emotion like anxiety, anger etc which were stuck in ur subconscious.. Also eating non veg food is not only violence, but Those emotions of animals when they see death goes inside ur body.. Thats why they follow non violence strictly... Also after sunset they don't eat cz there is scientific explanation too, ur digestive power decreases after sunset and food gets digested before you go to sleep, thus giving enough time for body to repair the cells at night when u sleep.. Also microorganisms increases in food after sunset, so not to eat after sunset(again same non violence principle and same logic of not eating non veg).. Their tirthankars who got enlightened they passed this knowledge to people, after spiritual awakening one can see many things because your third eye opens.. Same concept like matrix movie, we live in 3D world.. So all this Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism mainly works on these concepts passed down from awakened people.. Hence they say it's not religion, it's a way of life.. Yoga pranayam is there in Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism...

I am an American atheist. I think Jainism is the most ethical of all religions from what I have read. From what little I know it's ethics seem similar in many ways to secular humanism. It's odd how the ethics of one of the worlds oldest if not the oldest religion can seem so relevant and modern today. You were so lucky to be able to study there. I don't know any Jains in real life but I look forward some day to making many Jain friends

Pradeep M Dhalawat I have had good friends that were Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus but I don't think I have ever actually met a Jain before. I didn't know anything about Jainism until several years ago I came across some RUclips videos by an atheist author/speaker called Sam Harris. He was talking about Islam's claim to be a religion of peace and how specious that claim was for various reasons and especially in light of the fact that there really is a religion of peace called Jainism. He went on to describe how, no matter how seriously overboard a Jain took their religion they could never become a terrorist. It got me interested in finding out more because like I said before I had never heard of Jainism. I really don't know much about it other than what I have read and seen online but from what I have read you can rightfully be very proud of your tradition. I would never be able to be a good Jain. I am way to violent and I like meat too much (I am working on those things) but I do admire a lot about the Jains and their system of ethics. For example, I find the Jain teaching of non absolutism to be very interesting. I previously thought that non-absolutism was a modern idea. The world needs to adopt Jainism or at a minimum Jain like ethics or we will be in for some very bad times. If I ever do meet a Jain in real life I would go out of my way to make friends.

I am so glad to see that some people are practicing Jainism like you and specially when many Jains are converting to other religions maybe due to they are not aware about their own religion very well or maybe they feel uncomfortable for many reasons. Well Jainism is not at all any religion and it is way of life, also it actually says there shall not be any religion at all. Jainism and Buddhism is the only two religion which do not believe in God created Universe. Many people says Jainism is a branch of Hindism but that's not true. India's original name Bharat came from Jainism. Keep it up and Jai Jinendra. 😊🙏

I love this. Religion and spirituality is something I’ve always greatly wrestled with in life. I know I heard of jainism at some point I think maybe in high school? I grew up christian, then became buddhist, then wiccan, then briefly muslim😂 it was a rough ride. while wiccan I met my now husband who is a Jain from Mumbai. His great great (great?) grandfather was Raghavji Gandhi. I didn’t like it at first because I was still attached to the idea of a creator God. Now though I am diving well deep into jainism although I had already been practicing ahimsa and was vegan long before I knew of jainism. I grew up in a meat eating place and I always felt so strongly against it that I turned away from it as soon as I was out of my parents home. It was lovely to see your story 🙏🏼

Being a Jain, it's nice to see knowledge about Jainism spreading across the world. It isn't limited to being vegetarianism and non violence. Yes, it's way beyond that :) reading few books will change our life. The temples are worth visiting, but sadly majority of them were overtaken by other Kings, religions (Taj Mahal, Tirupati Balaji) Today too, we find statues of God during pipeline installation on roads, digging wells; statues-which were buried underground many years ago. Ultimately, teachings are what matter us the most. Read, read and improve lives around us. Let peace be around us :)

Jainism is the oldest religion in the world, based on the teachings of Ahimsa(Non-Violence) or reverence for all living beings.
There is NO creator .The universe is eternal and the earth we live in , is just a small spec in comparison . Non-Violence, Truth, Celibacy, Non-Stealing, Non-Possessiveness are few of the main beliefs. The Jain cuisine is completely vegetarian and also excludes underground vegetables such as potato, garlic, onion etc, to prevent injuring small insects and microorganisms, and also to prevent the entire plant getting uprooted and killed. There are about 4 million Jains in the world. Their aim is to achieve liberation of the soul (becoming God themselves ) by not being born again in another body. Jains believe this can be achieved through a life devoted to non-violence,compassion and the rejection of possessions. It does NOT derive from Hinduism, Budhism or any other faiths. It’s always been there since time (forever). Beside the 24 Thirthankers , 608 souls achieve Moksh every 6 months. They are all Gods - They achieve eternal peace and can know the past ,present and future all at once, but they have no desire to.

In meditation about a month ago I had a vision that was profound.
All religions, all praise and thanks to all religious deities is heard, and is registered. It explained that the vision that we have of a deity in our mind's eye is but a miniscule representation of the bliss generated by the all that is the deity.
Whatever image, or effigy of the said deity the prayor may visualize, all of them exist, they are real, and they exist in the present. (Visualize a quartz crystal shard of unlimited size. At the very point of the shard is the image of a deity one prays to, or thinks of. Just beyond the image of the deity and in the shard is every reference, every thought, every utterance in every language encapsulated.)
There was more, but this was but just a part of the vision. In searching for a meaning, Jainism came up in Google.

@@nomebear That's amazing ! In Jainism , there is a place called the samosharan. It means ("Refuge to All") and is the divine preaching hall of the Tirthankara(Gods) This is where the Sidh Bhagwan (God) sits and releases his OM cry three times a day. There are all kind of creatures, kings, angles , animals, who listen to this OM message and all understand in their own languages. We have all been there at some point in our past lives, but have forgotten in this world. There are a few people who have actually remembered their past lives and confirmed that they have been there and heard this direct knowledge . It’s deep and to understand this level , a study of Digamber Jainism is absolutely necessary.

@@nehaljain8504 There was never a division in real Jainism. Each one for himself, however the right path to Moksh is only through following Digamber Jainism. Before Mahvir Bhagwan, there was only Digambar Jain. Swetabar Sect arised due to the 12 years of terrible drought in Mahavirs time. People could not bear the drought and were going mad, When Munis’s came to their houses to ask for alms, they could not feed them and threw stones at them etc. Also people could not stand them being naked etc and therefore those munis started to cover themselves from being beaten up. There is a lot of differences in both belief systems.

@@manishshah2264 I understand that Jainism was a fully digambar sect but this is kalyug and I don't think any person in this age is capable of attaining moksh today(even them being digambar) Even if swetamber monks wear white clad they in their right minds are detached from it which is the main purpose of this act. In today's age when jainism is already thriving hard to exist because of oppression it is better to join hands and preach be it mandir wale or sthanakwasi or terapanthi or digambar or swetamber or any other sect. The main goal of every little sect is peace and compassion. The main idea is always to spread the word of Bhagwan Mahavira swamiji. It isn't about which is the right way to liberation or which is the true form...it is more about unity and faith in the ideology.

Sanatana Dharma leads to Omniscience IMHO, only coz it's approach and freedom towards Yoga and Meditation and ability to evolve creatively without strict rules to not believe in a God makes it more flexible. If you check out simulated universe theory, it has strong connections with ancient sanatana dharma and Patanjali's yogic way of life. Those ancient yogis and saints had designed the way of life for humanity to evolve to literally win the virtual game we call the universe.
