My father had a 1977 just like this one, except his was white on white exterior with white leather interior and red dash. He only had it a year. He then got a 1979 Caddy. The Caddy was nice, but nothing like the New Yorker. The New Yorker was nicer in every way.
I used to own the emerald green 4-door. the "Lean Burn" computer kept crapping out, so I replaced the ignition with an old-fashioned MSD box. Like driving a couch down the freeway. 80 MPH seemed like 40
My mom made a deal with my dad if he quit smoking he could get a new car. One evening he came home with a New Yorker. It wasn't new but had been in the Chrysler executive program so looked like it just came off the showroom floor. It was black with red leather interior. It even had the moon roof option. The only time I got to drive it was to Prom. One thing's for sure, it made you feel like you were really someone special. I wish he would have kept it. It was the only car I've ever enjoyed washing and waxing.
so being a giant rectangle made it inspiring to wash and wax? i prefer waxing my trans am and it does appeal to the eye and when its running it appeals to the ears
Beautiful looking classic 1978 Chrysler New Yorker Coupe, I would prefer to own and drive this car, than any of the new Chrysler’s of today, in 2019. Wow.
You bet they were comfortable, those seats could put you to sleep. I so miss those days and am so glad I was born when I was to experience cars from the 50's and 60's especially. I was 8 when Beatlemania swept the world and was all I could think about in 1964.
My father had the same car, you have no idea how comfortable this car was. When it comes to seating comfort, today's luxury cars can not compete with the American Luxury cars of the 1970's. Nothing and I mean nothing today, including a Rolls Royce, comes close to how comfortable luxury cars used to be.
@@petermartinijr.1012 My Father's Buick Electra with its massive velour seats was the most roomy, comfortable and SAFE feeling car I have ever been in. It was massive but didn't seem so at the time. It was just how cars were I thought at the time. The back seat was especially comfortable on long trips and more comfortable than any Limo I have ever been in with its blue velour upholstery. I like leather seats but this velour was so very comfortable both on really hot days because it was cool to the touch even on blazing hot days and cozy on cold winter days. I had a friend who's mother's BF had an imperial and we rode in the back many times and it too was an exceedingly nice place to be.
@@guidedmeditation2396 I normally prefer velour, but the New Yorker was the exception. Buick Electra, from the ‘70’s were nice. Before my father bought the ‘77 New Yorker he always bought Buick Electras.
I would prefer four door hardtop and corinthian leather, but all the way this car is SUPER GORGEOUS. Time machine. Like straight from the showroom of 40 years ago. Unbelievable.
My dad had a 77 Lincoln mark v and this car reminds me of that. I loved driving that huge beast, especially on the road trip from Portland to Reno with my dad and brother. Those old huge cars were something special, too bad mechanically they were less that perfect.
I had the same car, only a 1977. Big, ongoing problem was the exhaust manifolds were directly below the valve covers and so the valve cover gaskets would need to be replaced too often. Had heat shields put in, graphite gaskets, etc...but to no avail! But it was beautiful car; like driving in your living room and that 440 4bbl had the greatest takeoff as you entered the freeway ramp!!
It's too bad kids these days will never know what it's like to ride in true luxury. I'll never how comfortable the seats are. Ours was black with read leather. Amazing how fast and smooth riding it was.
They will never know how cheap you could pick these up in the 80s and how much fun it was doing road trips with your buddies in big comfortable flashy luxury.
Rick Fedderson Back in the day I've always owned a big Chrysler luxury car and they were really nice, I had Imperials, LeBarons & New Yorkers and tho I had good love for my car's I had stopped buying them when they cut back on the power and they still burned just as much fuel.
Thank goodness they don't. My Mom owned a dark green coupe BRAND new 1978 New Yorker Brougham with white top and green velour interior. Looked great. Total mechanical NIGHTMARE. Came with lean burn system that was horrible and on a good day, this log pusher would only get 7-8 mpg with premium fuel. To make that even funnier, the fuel tanks wee HUGE. This car reminds me of hers. Thing was, like this one, and hers, they would rust on the showroom floor brand new. .
Federal government has CAFE requirements that killed them off. 'Corporate Average Fuel Economy' Most recent victim that I know of was the Hummer. No more land yachts. :(
Now that there is the technology, there really isnt any reason not to........between the safety technology and the enginerring technology, the mpg's would be @least twice what it was back in the 70's & 80's....and they would be even safer than they were before.
The news in 1977 was the 1978 models would be the last of the big cars, So I ordered a white four door hardtop with a red leather interior. Ordered it with every option there was except moon roof, What a car. When the Imperial name was dropped. It became a New Yorker. I ordered it with a 440 but when it arrived ,it had a 400 They said they were discontinuing the 440. Big roomy and so comfortable on the road. Loved this car,
My father bought a new car every year and a half. Of all his cars, the 1977 New Yorker was my favorite. It was much nicer then any of the Caddys or Lincolns and they were nice cars, but the New Yorker was special. He had a 2-door like this one, white on white same roof as this the interior was white leather with the red dash and carpet. Too bad he only kept it a year. 44 years later I can still smell the leather of those pillowy white seats.
All that chrome and beauty just to carry oneself to the local grocery store to pick up some T-bone steaks and a bottle of Canadian Club. Those are some great memories. Theirs nothing like arriving in a New Yorker. Cheers 🇨🇦
My buddies Grandfather always drove Chryslers. So in 1973 he bought a 1974 Caddy. One year later. he traded it for a 1975 Imperial LeBaron. His wife loved the Imperial so much she bought a 1977 New Yorker Brougham since they had discontinued the Imperial. They never had a lick of trouble with either of them. They always kept up with the scheduled maintenance. I've driven cars from Chrysler I kept them maintained. Never had a problem. In fact, I remember the one day in the winter of 1985 was so cold people on my block couldn't get their cars started. My 1981 LeBaron (slant six engine) started. So go ahead people, bad mouth Chrysler, I know better.
I'm a guy in my fifties so I was a teenager when this car came out and I loved it because my father owned one so I bought one in decent shape and fixed it up and use it several times a week. What shocks me is how many teenagers, yes, teenagers especially girls ! tell me how much they like it all for the same reason, quality materials and styling. They were stunned when I let them see and sit inside it because the seats are so plush just like the one in this video compared to the state, cheap cookie cutter styling and materials used on todays cars even those considered " high end "

my first car was a 72' NY'kr just like this, blue, bitchin' seats, smooth ride....and a gas... *hog* ! at about 8 mpg. ($1 gallon then) so cheap to buy back then. ..great memories
I worked at a Chrysler Plymouth dealer when these were brand new. They were beautiful then and are beautiful now. I'd love to have one just like this one, grey interior and white exterior. Only one to beat it for me would be black and black with some legal tint on the glass and that's it, everything else 100% stock.
My Father had one of these specially ordered from the Factory. Silver exterior and Red Interior. It was a 1977 which was basically the same except the front grill and different wheels. It was a four door car loaded with leather. Sadly though it was a lot of trouble. That Electronic lean burn system was the culprit. It only had 30k on it at 7 years of age and the Tranny started slipping. It was traded in for a 78 Mark V which was a good car but it started burning oil. The styles were much more individualized back then. I would say the Lincoln would have been more reliable because of Chryslers Financial problems back then..

I bought one new , and replaced the steering gear box 3 times. It failed all 3 times in left hand turns, and broke. Chrysler Corp replaced it twice under warranty. The third time, I replaced it with a gear box from a 74 Newport, and traded for a new Lincoln Mark 5. I've never gone back to Chrysler.
