When I was in college in the 1980s, I was involved with Amway for several months, of course having been invited by a friend! Quite a few details on this episode were different than an Amway meeting, but the general principle of a high energy presentation with people giving speeches, etc. yes, that’s almost exactly what I experienced in those Amway meetings All those years ago. There are many crimes that departments don't bother to arrest or seek prosecution for anymore because of the expense to taxpayers (just getting someone through the justice system for such a crime as public intoxication is hardly cost-effective). But some of these crimes come in handy in other ways: for example, arresting someone on one of these types of charges to get them in custody and available to be interviewed during an investigation into more serious crimes.

So, she pays her $500 and lays low for six months and then goes back to it under another name?
Also, today in 2021 the United States still does not have 360 million people, The population is about 332 million.

@@heyoldman2003 At the beginning of the episode the captain had complained that Mrs. Bonnie Bates's late husband was only slowed just a bit by the conviction on a false advertising charge. In the case of Mrs. Bates, the addition of the lottery charge resulted in a $500 fine plus six months of probation. I'm sure that really, really slowed her down.

@@1969atiq Well certainly not the $500 fine. While $500 went a lot farther in those days, it would still be pocket change for Bonnie Bate. Would the six months probation put a crimp in her business? A little bit, but I don't think enough to persuade her to go into a different line of work.
