Jamal Mashburn is my all time favorite Kentucky Wildcat. In my opinion, he is the greatest recruit ever at UK because of his talent level and the timeframe at UK. I loved how he could do it all: shoot from anywhere, score whenever he wanted, pass, and rebound. He was unselfish and always seemed to make the right play. The man could have been arrogant, yet he was humble. A few years ago, I asked my dad, who was born in 1949, who is the greatest Kentucky Wildcat you've ever seen. He saw the Fiddlin' Five, Rupp's Runts, Dan Issel, etc. and he said Jamal Mashburn without even thinking about it. He said Issel was great, but he couldn't do it all like Jamal. That 1992 team is probably my favorite UK team. I remember being stunned when Laettner hit that shot. I was down for 3 months. I finally rewatched the game a few years ago and it hit me that it wasn't just a big game UK lost. It is really something for Kentuckians to be proud of. Kentucky would have won it all the next year if the refs hadn't called a phantom foul on Mashburn. That one bothers me more now.
And yes I always thought there were 2 bad foul calls on Mash against both Duke and the next year against Michigan that would've almost certainly rewrote the script if they weren't called.
Wow! Rex was my childhood hero, then I watched the Mashburn teams almost win that title . Awesome to have them on one place talking about regular day to day stories.
"Sexy" Rex Chapman, Jamal "The Monster Mash" Mashburn, Tony "Long Arms" Delk, Chuck "Dirty Work" Hayes, Patrick "Team-First" Patterson, and Darius "Does Everything" Miller are my favorite Wildacts. Loved watching the passion they played with. Longtime Cards fan. Go Cards!
So much wisdom here, thought there would be some overlap having listened to the Q & D podcast first....but even with some of same stories, he's still adding little nuggets he didn't mention before. Validated a lot of stuff I thought was very important to life, especially the asking questions, being curious, and knowing what you want, his mom was a real one.
I played ball at OBI..ritchie was at clay county & our arch rivals...he was an incredible player in high school..had a high arching jump shot & could really light it up .even off the dribble ..he wasnt often challanged until uk...
My 2 favorite UK players ever. Rex was King. What a player...Mash, i watched the barn storming tour his freshman year at Paducah Tilghman. I think he had 50 points.
CM Newton, Rick Pitino and Jamal Mashburn deserve credit for restarting Kentucky as the leading brand in modern college basketball. It sparked my interest in college basketball. Class of 1984.
Never knew about Jamal's dad. Holy shit!!! He was absolutely thrown to the wolves. Ken Norton in his 9th fight, Cleveland Williams in his 14th fight, Larry Holmes in his 16th fight
He was mr newyork and didn't make the McDonald All american game. The guys from newyork who did. Most of them didn't make the Nba.One of the best out of newyork.

Mash ment so much to UK! If no mash no unforgettable, no 96 no 98! I personally think UK would resemble IU more then the UK of today
