It's really cool to learn about some of the technical hurdles and reasoning behind certain design elements of SRB2, and it's neat to finally see the original GFZ2! Looking forward to part 2! EDIT: Also, the old speed shoes effect kinda looks like boosting.
This is pretty interesting! Sonic Robo Blast 2 is my fav Sonic fangame, and it's amazing that is has so much history. Thinking this game has been around for more than 20 years and that's still having updates speaks about it's legacy in the community.
@@sonikku1011 Why, hello, fellow 30-something-year-old Sonic fan lol. I wasn't really part of the community back then either, insofar my 12-year-old self lurked the STJr message board in the year 2000 (then hosted on EZBoard) and played the hell out of SRB2 Halloween and Xmas. I regret not registering and getting more involved. When did you first discover this game?
@@Konic_and_Snuckles I didn't join the community until late 2008, I discovered SRB2 probably sometime in 2010 or 2011 so about 10 years after this beta was built lol. I remember coming across the Sonic 2 Beta page (which is Sonic Retro now) in mid 2006 though.
I don't know why but something about the roughness of the older SRB2 versions is really charming for me. I could compare early SRB2 to music made by a few teenagers who aren't rich or famous or anything on a garage and later SRB2 is like a well-produced, hit song by a popular band. Both are great, just different and i see the earlier one less often.
Wow, what a trip down memory lane! I've been following SRB2 since 1998-1999. It's wild seeing such an old prototype. Will this be uploaded to the SRB2 Wiki so the community can download it? I'm sure the devs behind the SRB2 The Past project would love to incorporate this into their wad.
My only personal opinion on the Unity or Unreal part is that it was 100% good this game was made on Doom than anything else. Mainly due to how easily moddable and how easily accessible it is for people to make their own levels and stuff. It would of not had as much popularity without it.
I personally didn't know that they had originally planned for the first act of GFZ to be divided into 2 acts, how interesting and at the same time impressive. (Used google translator XD)
Omg this is so cool. I've been a huge SRB2 fan for a few years now, and I've always loved seeing prototypes of games and the changes they've gone through during development! Also if you don't mind me asking, how did you and the team use Sonic X-Treme sprites in SRB2 when that game never released? I know they were just placeholder sprites, but I do think it's neat that they were used at all lol. And also, do you plan on releasing this prototype? It's a very cool find, and I'd love to see more videos covering it!
I'm in my 20s and I didn't even exist back when you two were working on this damn thing. It's real bad, but it's also real history. Here's to another 23 years of SRB2!
*_OH MY GOD THIS IS A LEGIT DREAM COME TRUE. I'M SO, SO HAPPY!_* Here's an idea: For the copyright-free version of the release, maybe replace all the Doom assets with that of Sonic Doom 2?
Looking at this again, I'm guessing the Techno Hill boss arena was designed to fill up with the purple damage-liquid during the fight, with the raised grass platforms serving as safe areas.
*Glaber looking at the GFZ Prototype:*

Greenflower always felt like a tech demo to showcase new additions for each major updates.
The Duo is finally back with a discovered prototype!!!
Truly amazing SSNTails & Sonikku!!!

What an amazing find!!! Hilarious seeing the Doom demo gameplay interfering at the start hehehe

Man I remember seeing this gfz only in the trailers
This is actually cool, I can't belive that this is real! Hopefully this will get finish and release to the public!
holy crap, this is kinda big
ive been a long follower of srb2 since 2.0 and it is very cool to see a long lost build like this
Being with this game from the start has been an experience lol

Looks like we're seeing a GOOD look in this Prototype
this is a pretty cool relic of SRB2 past! thanks for showing it off!!

So crazy how far Sonic Robot Blast 2 has came since this prototype.

Finally, another recovered prototype
This greenflower was the closest well get to the sage 2000 even thought sadly it's not it
congrats on showing the new, never before seen content
very cool, excited to play this when its released

For the former question, the sprites were released by Rob Harris in 1999.
And for the latter, the description says yes
This is great! Glad I just got into SRB2 a few days ago
This is actually crazy
Amazing discovery
Holy shit this is a great discovery and good way to start 2024. Edit: Yes I know it’s 1/6/24 not 1/1/24 but I don’t care about it.
It finally got found. I think i’m dreaming.
This is not the SAGE 2000 'build'. No such build ever existed (much like this one).

Omg you back finallly
Wow... crawla were friendly back then!
time for 2.2 newbies to try and revive mp on this version..
They have to modify the netcode to be stable, Halloween to Demo 3 is very laggy and most of the times it kicks you off the server
OH MY GOD
Cool
Someone should remake this ASAP
Could somebody explain me what that version is?
I love seeing old school SRB2 stuff.

is this a older version of the lost sage 2000 version?
Yes. By Aug/Sept 2000, the old GFZ1 & 2 had been combined, and the new GFZ2 was made.
Do you still play srb2? (Like the new version)
