Many thanks Mr. Jones. I appreciate your endeavours to uphold our sovereignty. I am of an "earlier" generation, so-to-speak. My recollection of past international agreements, required us to "self sufficient" ,this being a combination of production and storage, for a period of either 3 or 6 months. I was led to believe that was the impetus behind the widespread storage facilities, combined with the necessary transport methods to maintain storage levels, around New Zealand, the one that springs to mind first is the tank farm at Wiri. It was huge back in its heyday, I guess the pipeline from Marsden Point did make some of that facility redundant. My question is, why has this target been reduced to 28 days? My preference would be to go back to the "self sufficiency" model of which ever the time was - either 3 or 6 months

'Carless days.' From memory NZ needed 3 mths reserves of fuel, the escalation of the number of transport vehicles since then, Air, Sea, Road, Private and Commerical has increased considerably so I would suggest 3mths. From the social fabric side of the coin and media, what turmoil could be created when living on such a small time frame. 28 days would required a possible another carless days scenario and residential restrictions, oh wait a minute have we not just gone through all that with covid and now we have huge problems to get structure. The saying “Measure twice, cut once” is a classic adage that has been passed down through the ages and is still relevant today. It is a reminder to take the time to double-check measurements and ensure accuracy before taking any irreversible actions.

I agree 💯 with those who say the Marsden Point re-opening is a step in the right direction.
A sea enclosed Island Nation needs more than 30xdays of oil/petrol /airplane fuel reserves as backup. 3x months reserves minimum or a 1x year supply would give confidence to the public, in case of a worst case scenario should occur. With an operational Marsden Point refinery, a 3x months reserve is standard.

I see that petrol has not been mentioned, WHY. At the moment we receive petrol from overseas. My question is "How old is that petrol?" The petrol we receive at the moment is terrible as the shelf life is only a few weeks. I had trouble starting my chainsaw recently, took it to the repair shop and found out it was not starting due to old fuel. I was sold a small bottle of "petrol preserver" at a ridiculous price and told not to keep petrol for more than a few weeks. The boat was the same. I had to drain about 60-70 litres an use in my car as the two stroke outboards will not run on stale petrol.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Labour under Nash (1957 -1960) commissioned both the Tīwai Point aluminium smelter & the Marsden Point oil refinery.
Completed in 64, it was a 2 year build costing taxpayers NZ£10 million. Expanded in 73 for NZ$160 million. A fortuitous move no doubt motivated by intel from the SIS - The Yom Kippur War motivated OPEC to raise crude oil prices resulting in the first global oil shock... A barrel of oil went from US$3 to US$20. An Israel attack on Iran's oil platforms, refineries & oil fields won't effect NZ., 90% goes to China. NZ's oil comes from refineries in Singapore, Korea & Japan. A conflict b/w China & Taiwan is the biggest threat to NZ security.
