Shaping Software Impact During Inception

The inception stage of a software project is the most critical stage, where requirements are conceptualised. Often this is done without giving much though to purpose of the software, leading to eventual failure of the software project. Also instead of merely focusing on functional features the software should reflect the central principles of business. To achieve this the project team, which includes business as well as technical people, should make a conscious effort to capture what is central to success of the software, what the business goal is, and where the value is. Software usually comprises of different independent parts or contexts within it, each having a varying degree of importance and impact for the business. The requirements for these different parts should be analysed, to identify the high impact parts. All of these should happen at the inception stage in order for software to make business impact.
