Find it difficult to model beams in 3D WITHIN new sketching mode which allows connecting nodes in 2D plane only ... I.e modeling beams (in 3D) by connecting nodes seems to be lil difficult in this version.. am I missing any links here ... ?

Yes, they have made this workflow a little slower with the sketch tab. Once you've selected your line tool etc, hit 'D' to switch back to 3D mode.
