  • Come Along with Eric O. as he has a look at this 2005 Chevrolet 1500 5.3 that has a symptom of low cylinder contribution. Not a dead miss but a "slight miss". Gathered some surprising evidence when we scoped the fuel injector to get a waveform.

The depth of knowledge, though process, diagnostic steps, evidence gathering, and failure confirmation you display all motivate and inspire me to improve my own troubleshooting. Keep it up and most of all thanks for taking the time to make these videos and for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us!

    Since I'm trying to gain knowledge in the diagnostics side of auto repair these type videos are my favorite. I just bought a used Vantage so I am taking the next step in my learning process. You, Ivan and Paul have been a lot of help so I appreciate your help.

      I recently bought a used Vantage Pro myself. I chose the Vantage mainly because Ivan recommended it. Although I've only used it once so far to diagnose a temperature sensor, I love knowing that I have it. Two channels and the component info is a confidence builder for sure.

      That's great. I hope it helps you in the future too. I'll be going to scannerdanner's premium channel to watch his videos on the Vantage. I believe there is about 8 hours of lessons just on this one tool.

    I keep a few fuel injector filters on hand for some injector "failures". A simple drywall screw is used to extract the filter and I have a modified plastic syringe to do a quick cleaning process to the injector while it's out of the vehicle. When it comes to shorted or open injectors, a replacement is the only option.
    I just uploaded a full shop tour on my channel and I would be honored if you stopped by to take a look.
    Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

    Eric - You asked if anybody had seen a bad injector on a 5.3. I have a 2004 Silverado with a 5.3 and it had a misfire under load that turned out to be #4. I swapped the #2 and #4 coils because I was sure that it was a coil problem. #4 still misfired, so disconnected the #4 injector and measured 12.8 ohms of resistance. I then felt the injector to see that the seals were tight and felt something odd on the backside. So, took the fuel rail off and pulled the injector and the backside of the coil portion of the case had split.
    So, put in a new injector and misfire under load was gone...

    I actually HAVE had only one case where I diagnosed a bad injector. On and off it would fail. Started checking injectors after I cleared the ignition with a clean bill of health. I wanna say it was Cylinder #5. Caught it with it's pants down! Had driver control, no voltage kick and no current (total failure when hot) while using my trusty Modis Ultra. Great video man, thanks for the share. Love the diag cases you post! Keep it up and have a gret day!

    Reading the comments it sounds like idle roughness is just built into these 5.3's. I've got a bit of idle roughness on my 2002 GMC Sierra 5.3L with 53K miles. No MIL, no stored or history codes, and it's very slight, almost imperceptible. I see no misfires on the misfire counters, no fuel trim issues, everything seems to be working like it's supposed to but there's definitely an erratic miss, just ever so slight. I did clean the TB which definitely needed cleaning but it didn't help. I suppose I could ohm out the injectors but I doubt it's anything hard failed like this, though. Great vid!
    I love the diagnostic & Check Engine vids, Eric, and have watched every one you have. Thanks for taking the time and keep 'em coming!

      Check if yours has an EGR valve or just a blocking plate. It seems to eliminate the EGR they advance the exaust timing , which cause a lopping.

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 8 лет назад

      No EGR on mine. There's no blocking plate where the EGR usually goes on the 5.3. It's missing everything related to the EGR. Maybe that's it.

    Great video as always. In the last 11 years of having my own shop, also in truck country with lots of chevys. I can only recall encountering 2 different trucks with a bad injector. 1 was a Tahoe and the other was a 1500. Both were 5.3 Z engines. It was back before I got handy with my scope. I used injector balance test and resistance to diagnose them. If I’d started watching you and scannerdanner sooner, I would’ve been able to diagnose them faster. Thanks to your videos, my scope stays pretty busy these days. Thank you.👍

    Well I just had an '07 2500HD w/6.0L with the same issue, granted this truck was rough, but cyl 6 miss. 2 busted plugs and 6 of 8 wires broke on removal.... went ahead and played swaptronics with the coils from 6 and 2, still had the miss on 6... injector 6 was shorted @ 4.5ohm.
    I don't have a scope yet so had to just use the DMM but the result of the diagnosis was the same. great video on how to diagnose properly!

    Whoa, crazy find! I've never personally seen a Multec 2 fail like that; normally they just get a bit gummed up, sticky or clogged, and a good cleaning (OFF the vehicle!) gets 'em back to normal.
    My folks have owned a 2002 GMC Yukon Denali (6.0L) since new, and with close to 170,000 miles on it, it's still chuggin' along. It hasn't been without its problems, but aside from routine maintenance, the engine has never given my folks any trouble. I'll be treating it to a full gasket set in the next month or two, and after that, I have full confidence in it making its usual journey between Los Angeles, CA and Vancouver, Canada and back when it needs to.

    An even faster test for a dead injector is to take a long flat-blade screwdriver and put the tip on the injector body and put your ear on the end of the handle. You can hear the injector pintle moving. Sounds sort of like a ticking sound. You should do a couple on the same motor to get the average sound of them and any that are acting up are immediately obvious.

  • @tiredoldmechanic1791
    @tiredoldmechanic1791 6 лет назад +5

    I'll admit to changing or swapping an injector on a misfiring cylinder without a thorough diagnosis. Working in a scrapyard, it was easy to grab an injector. As others have said, unless you work on these on a daily basis, the cost of the tools, and more importantly, access to wiring diagrams and data, like the correct resistance values is difficult to justify. Any other product you purchase comes with a wiring diagram. Washing machines, air conditioners, dishwashers, heaters etc all come with wiring diagrams. Motor vehicles should come with wiring diagrams specific to the vehicle or the manufacturer should have a website where the owner or a mechanic can get free access to them by entering the serial number. I can get that information about almost everything online but somehow, auto manufacturers have gotten away with charging for that. You must spend quite a bit monthly on the services we've seen you get information from.

    seen those fuel lines rust internally anf send rust into injector screens causing misfire from lack of flow. Fixed by r and r lines and clean fuel rail and injectors

    I have encountered a bad injector on a 01 Silverado. My problem was extended crank time. The classic loss of fuel pressure a short time after key off. In my diagnostic process i pulled the fuel rail with injectors and had the wife turn the key on. I watched the injector spray. I went ahead and replaced the fuel filter out of caution and popped in a known good injector out of my old truck I still had.
    I also was not expecting a bad injector, but wanted to eliminate other possibilities before replacing the pump which the previous owner had already replaced for other reasons. He sold the truck because he thought the pump was bad and didn't want to replace it again.

    I have personally replaced 2 injectors on 2 different 6.0 chevys. 05 cadillac escalade 6.0. had a misfire more pronounced when warm but very random. hooked up fuel pressure guage and did a fuel injector Balance test with scan tool. Number 1 injector flowed 4 psi less then the others. also a 03 Savana 3500 6.0 preformed same test to find no injector flow on #4 at all. switched #4 and #6 injector pigtail and #6 worked with #4 control harness. ohm check didn't help here

    I had one about a month ago we Rebuilt trans and then had a bad b2 sensor 2 same as your dead no voltage. We had a horrible miss on cyl 6 but had good readings with verus scoping etc. I about had determined it had a bad valve but we went ahead and threw an 02 sensor at it and Walla no more misfire still haven't figured out how a bad 02 was causing only cyl 6 to misfire and this was kinda like this video got worse as it warmed up. great video as well.

    I just wonder about your comment about my issue regarding a particular misfire for cylinder 2 for the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid ( the bad thing is the injector plugs are not accessible without removing the intake manifold. Followings are what I did so far: 1. Cylinder Compression tests are done and all-around 180 for Kıa Optima Hybrid. 2- Cylinder Leakage tests are done with no head gasket issue. All leakages in %2 to % 4 for all cylinders. 3 - All spark plugs end Coils were replaced with OEM ones. 4. I tested ınjector 2 because there was a P0202 error and I also tested it outside of the car. I installed a new injector too. P0202 is removed, But still, I have a misfire error. The cables look good from the outside there is no damage but I am guessing maybe a broken injector ruined the ECU injector transistor. The worst thing is the problem does not occur permanently, it comes randomly. I use Autel IM508 to test while driving as well. Missfire counts randomly and I feel the rough driving. I also have Cat P0430 error according to the error. When I see this error I also thought maybe the injector working fine but ignition coil firing has the issue. I eliminate many things, now I am thinking 3 reasons: Injector cable harness, Ignition cable harness (it is not separate and I have to replace all engine harnesses), Faulty ECU.

    Don't be surprised at a shorted fuel injector coil. Putting any coil over the top of a hot engine for a prolonged period of time is not a good idea. My surprise is that they work as good as they do for so long. Like you said, it was an older truck. Keep making You Tubes videos. You do a great job and I really enjoy them.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 лет назад

      Oh I am surprised at a bad injector coil because we just don't see them short that often. A lot of injectors get swapped out when people guess but how many do you actually see (and prove) bad.

    FYI, I'm in Australia, and have the '17 Holden Caprice, which has the LS3. 97,000km on the clock, and THREE injectors have failed so far, and I think a 4th is on the way out too. (misfire codes on #6). Usually, I get both a misfire code, AND an "injector circuit fault" code, however so far, #6 is only reporting misfire. Dealer said it's a reasonably common problem at the moment, on high usage vehicles such as mine (I'm a limo driver), and police vehicles etc. They also say the coils are going *high* impedance, not low, like yours.

    i had a 2500 hd before having my verus with scope and had exact same fish bite miss, ended up being a bad/clogged injector im not sure. Found it when i moved it to another cylinder and the misfire moved. sadly i didn't have a scope and do not remember if i checked the resistance of it but replacing the 1 injector did fix the truck

    My wife bought a brand new 2015 Silverado, 5000 miles and the injectors went bad twice. After the 2nd time the tech said it was a catastrophic failure, too much fuel dumped in the cylinder.
